BOCA RATON Confused Palm Beach County voters helped thwart Al Gore's 2000 bid to become president of the United States, but he was introduced as "president of the planet" when he returned here Saturday night to deliver an environmental lecture.
The former vice president spoke on climate change at the Mizner Park Amphitheater to a crowd of about 800. More than 200 protesters gathered across the street from the event, and their boos and chants could be heard inside the amphitheater as Gore began his presentation.
Gore lost Florida, and the White House, by 537 votes to George W. Bush in a 2000 as many Palm Beach County Democrats said they mistakenly voted for conservative Pat Buchanan because they were confused by the county's "butterfly ballot" design.
After losing the presidential race, Gore became arguably the world's most famous advocate for curbing carbon emissions, gaining eco-celebrity status with the film An Inconvenient Truth and winning a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Hilarious. The protestors were the equivalent of 1/4 of the crowd.
That ballot was designed by a Supervisor of Elections who was a Democrat. I am as convinced as ever that its confusing design was on purpose, to give voters a chance to contest the election in that county.
The entire Florida election fray of 2000 was a rouse from day one. They fought to keep absentee ballots from being counted, they wanted a recount but only in some counties, and on and on.
It's easy to forget all the crapola the Dems have been guilty of over the years. It's like their plan is to keep the fraud and abuse coming at such a rate that no one can keep up with it all.
Okay, which one?

The thing that dumbfounded me that night was why a local reporterette "just happened" to decide to interview live, a Palm Beach polling area and slowly confirm there was "some confusion" about the butterfly ballot, and as Bush gained further ahead, so did more Palm Beach voters. Her already being there was certainly no coincidence. Years before, they were told to "cool it" when Clinton showed gains against Bob Dole.
I'm tired of this freaking lie being repeated. The 537 vote margin was the "official" total only because Gore's people cherry-picked several idiot heavy precincts where they could manufacture votes and narrow the margin.
It has been some time since I read Bill Sammon's excellent book At Any Cost but, when it actually came time to sign affidavits under penalty of perjury, they came up with a relatively handful of people willing to swear they voted for Pat Buchanan because of the confusing "butterfly ballot." I do not recall the actual number, but it was in the low double digits, far less than the number of overseas military ballots which Democrat lawyers disqualified based on chickensh*t technicalities.
Isn’t it hilarious that the folks who spout that line are the biggest fear mongers on the planet?
All those 2who refused to sign the affidavit should have been jailed.
Crowd? If that's the same amphitheater I went to, it comfortably seats 2000 towards the front to begin with.
Oh, nicely done.
Of all the aspects of the American way of life none is so important as out election process. And yet we limp along year after year, election after election, suspecting widespread abuse of the system and outright fraud. Situations like motor voter registration and refusal to require positive ID when voting, not to mention the vast opportunity for misdeeds in the absentee voter system make it had to believe that the system is on the up and up. Add to these the inability so often to count votes and certify an election for weeks and weeks and you have a situation that threatens the very core of our nation.
The vote is the underpinning of our entire government. If we can’t get a handle on keeping it open and above board then we are doomed regardless of what our financial system does or our ability to get enough oil.
And what really bothers me now is the move by so many jurisdictions to voting by mail simply to keep the cost of having an election as low as possible.
Good topic, he is correct on this; it was 75 in Boca on Friday, 81 on Saturday. See? Climate change...

I agree completely. When we can sit and predict whats going to happen before it happens, such as “precincts aren’t finished voting during the deadline” or “absentee ballot sacks were found in a swimming pool supply locker 12 hours late,” or Mickey Mouse registered and voted. Every time safeguards are suggested, they are shot down by Congress, Senate and Judges like clay pigeons before they even reach the waters edge. Teams of lawyers rushed to Florida, teams of lawyers were rushed to Wasilla, Alaska just on a threatening feeling.

Sorry for the double, browser nodded off.
Dear God in Heaven, I humbly thank you for your miraculously rescuing us from electing this nutjob, Algore, pResident...
