The details on this are still sketchy, we’ll probably never know what went on. But it appears that Hadley Climate Research Unit has been hacked and many many files have been released by the hacker or person unknown.. I’m currently traveling and writing this from an aiprort, but here is what I know so far: An unknown person put postings on some climate skeptic websites that advertsied an FTP file on a Russian FTP server, here is the message that was placed on the Air Vent today:
We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps.
We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents
The file was large, about 61 megabytes, containing hundreds of files.
It contained data, code, and emails from Phil Jones at CRU to and from many people.

Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998. The climateaudit.org site is overwhelmed already from people trying to get onto it. The lid has blown off Al Gore, George Soros, Goldman Sachs, the Sierra Club, and all the other scum that have been peddling the AGW myth. I sent to Drudge and if he had a lick of sense, he will have a screaming siren at the top of the page very soon.

61 megabytes of files, data, source codes, and emails. Steve McIntyre from limate Audit has been requesting data from these guys forever and they refused to release it to him They recently said it was ‘lost’ I beleive. Well it looks like some of it has been ‘found’ and the ramifications could be enormous. People’s career’s could be ruined, cap and trade could be blown up, the fraudsters like Al Gore shamed into admitting their lies, and the country a hell of a lot better off.

I understand from reading here........... http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=7801#comments that it is out on bittorrent already and has been downloaded across the world. If proven real, it drives a stake through the heart of AGW and should result in the likes of Michael Mann, Briffa, Al Gore, etc being tossed in jail for perpetrating the fraud of the century.
Smells like a rick roll.

While this may be an elaborate hoax, I tend to doubt it. A hoax would require more competence than bureaucrats are capable of.

The FOI2009.zip FTP file has been deleted. Also, I did a search for a torrent file with that name, but haven’t found one, yet. Any idea what they would have renamed it before uploading it as a torrent file?

BUT - and it's an important “but” - the various emails and files and documents are themselves “real world” and real time. They are not written or scripted like an edited book. The dates and sequences ring correct: very, very difficult to do for records spanning more than a decade.
The related events (other publications, other authors’ quotes - and Handley Center's efforts to suppress other articles and in other peer-reviewed journals appear at the right time, under the right circumstances to “create” the organized deliberate fraudulent presentation of ONLY pro-AGW data in the scientific and IPCC’s “scientific” data.
Their blatant comments and “adjustments” of temperature data reflect actual changes that were made between 1995 and 2009.
Were they stupid to admit in emails that they were adjusting data to fit the UN’s needs for corrupt data? Yes. But if you “know” you cannot get caught, that you are “doing the right thing” by “saving the earth” (from capitalism and energy-using businesses) - then, well, yes you “need to save the planet - no matter what it takes.”
So, yes, the total amount of the files are true: even if some may have errors.
Was the whole thing faked? No. Not in my opinion.
Not by the responses that the AGW propagandists are presenting.

Wow... If this is a hoax, it is truly the most elaborate I’ve ever heard of. The some of the data summary papers alone would take months to produce.
