How many have NASA or NSF grants? If any do they should be permanently banned from the trough.

In my book SCIENCE FUNDING: POLITICS AND PORKBARREL, I presented evidence that federal funding of science has corrupted the American scientific enterprise. However, I'm surprised (but not pleased) to find that it has grown to this magnitude. I expected only petty fraud like doctoring photomicrographs.

I attribute this to the NIH effect. At our institution if it doesn’t come from NIH it really doesn’t count toward promotion and tenure. The administrations are addicted to the overhead, it funds their fun. So much of the important research being done is unimportant. It is just the in thing. We need to bring the funding back to the State level and follow the “chance favors the prepared mind” model and let some innovative folk have a shot at pushing us forward. If it doesn’t fit the NIH model it usually doesn’t get done. That’s why most of the major fraud occurs at Harvard, etc.
