Climategate: how the MSM reported the greatest scandal in modern science
Telegraph UK ^ | Nov 21, 2009 | James Delingpole

Posted on 11/21/2009 5:31:48 AM PST by PapaBear3625

Like the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses scandal, this is the gift that goes on giving. It won’t, unfortunately, derail Copenhagen (too many vested interests involved) or cause any of our many political parties to start talking sense on “Climate change”. But what it does demonstrate is the growing level of public scepticism towards Al Gore’s Anthropogenic Global Warming theory. That’s why, for example, this story is the single most read item on today’s Telegraph website.

[...]

But in the case of “Climate Change”, the MSM has been caught with its trousers down. The reason it has been so ill-equipped to report on this scandal is because almost all of its Environmental Correspondents and Environmental Editors are parti pris members of the Climate-Fear Promotion lobby. Most of their contacts (and information sources) work for biased lobby groups like Greenpeace and the WWF, or conspicuously pro-AGW government departments and Quangos such as the Carbon Trust. How can they bring themselves to report on skullduggery at Hadley Centre when the scientists involved are the very ones whose work they have done most to champion and whose pro-AGW views they share?

As the story continues to unfold, the biggest losers will be the MSM.

I excerpted the main money-quotes. Read the whole thing.

I hope the story unfolds. So far it has been so scarcely reported few people understand it or take it seriously.

The MSM will never admit it is part of the Hoax. In fact they will continue the Hoax to the bitter end. They are fully indoctrinated, fanatical “Citizens of the World”. Unable to form a logical thought pattern.

Personally I think the "silent majority" wasn't fooled by this crock of crap. I know it probably goes back further than this but I remember back in the 1980s reading about how the seas would rise and WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE because of man-made global warming.

Didn't happen.

Of course the press keeps crying wolf anyway.

The only people who think that man-made global warming is a serious problem are the same people who are arrogant enough to believe that man can have any permanent impact on a planet that can, and has, literally thrown away every member of a long line of dominant life forms over the course of over a billion years.

The Greenshirts, the MSM, and the sycophant corporate rent-seekers will close ranks and seek to perpetuate the fraud.

They will never admit the truth, that is not their agenda. Power and wealth and yet more power is their agenda.

The more throats the Greenshirts can step on the better, from their point of view.

Are/did four Americans help scientists in the U.K. break the law by destroying emails require under the U.K. Freedom of Information Law? Here is the sequence of emails: Cast of Caracter: Phil Jones, Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia Michael Mann, Penn State Ray Bradley, U. Mass Caspar Ammann, NCAR Tim Osborn, Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia David Palmer, Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia Gene Wahl, NOAA From: Phil Jones To: "Michael E. Keep this quiet also, but this is the person who is putting in FOI requests for all emails Keith and Tim have written and received re Ch 6 of AR4. We think we've found a way around this. ……………………………………………… From: Phil Jones To: t.osborn@uea.ac.uk,"Palmer Dave Mr \(LIB\)" Subject: Re: FW: Your Ref: FOI_08-23 - IPCC, 2007 WGI Chapter 6 Assessment Process [FOI_08-23] Date: Wed, 28 May 2008 17:13:35 +0100 Cc: "Briffa Keith Prof \" , "Mcgarvie Michael Mr \" Dave, Although requests (1) and (2) are for the IPCC, so irrelevant to UEA, Keith (or you Dave) could say that for (1) Keith didn't get any additional comments in the drafts other than those supplied by IPCC. On (2) Keith should say that he didn't get any papers through the IPCC process.either. I was doing a different chapter from Keith and I didn't get any. What we did get were papers sent to us directly - so not through IPCC, asking us to refer to them in the IPCC chapters. If only Holland knew how the process really worked!! Every faculty member in ENV and all the post docs and most PhDs do, but seemingly not Holland. So the answers to both (1) and (2) should be directed to IPCC, but Keith should say that he didn't get anything extra that wasn't in the IPCC comments. As for (3) Tim has asked Caspar, but Caspar is one of the worse responders to emails known. I doubt either he emailed Keith or Keith emailed him related to IPCC. I think this will be quite easy to respond to once Keith is back. From looking at these questions and the Climate Audit web site, this all relates to two papers in the journal Climatic Change. I know how Keith and Tim got access to these papers and it was nothing to do with IPCC. Cheers Phil ……………………………………………. From: Phil Jones To: "Michael E. “It won’t, unfortunately, derail Copenhagen”

The Copenhagen Treaty is already dead in the water, since China and India are refusing to cooperate. They aren’t stupid. Russia said a while back that it’s energy economy “is carbon based” for the foreseeable future.

There was already considerable skepticism here in the US (most people don’t feel any warming is caused by humans). It would have been political suicide in the long run to enact massive taxes and kill our economy over a non-effect.

The release of this information, which shows:

1) Illegal resistance to FOIA requests
2) Tampering with scientific data to support CAGW
3) Probable destruction of data to prevent peer replication (or not) of results
4) Suppression of scientific data that contradicted their theories
5) Suppression of opposing scientific viewpoints in peer reviewed publications (then claiming that due to few peer reviewed papers being published the other side had no evidence)
6) Guidelines for brainwashing the gullible masses with their viewpoint
7) Probable money laundering

is absolutely enough to show CAGW has been an enormous scam.

It will also doubtless result in a Congressional investigation into similar entities here in the US, the IPCC in particular. I expect Senator Inhofe had a party last night.

Some of the top folks at CRU will very likely never practice science again, and the worst offenders will likely end up in jail.

This is the biggest scientific scandal of all time. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Literally TRILLIONS of dollars, and the entire future of the US economy were on the line.

It doesn’t matter if the big MSM outlets are slow to cover this. It’s gone viral, Fox and Drudge are both carrying it - the cat’s out of the bag!

Victory is at hand! WOOHOO!

I would argue that the issue involves complexities that the average MSM writer cannot comprehend.

Science, business, legislation -- lots of what reporters write about involves issues that reporters know little about. That's how these illegitimate relationships form.

The reporters cannot write intelligently about the issues unless knowledgeable insiders HELP them understand and HELP them write their articles. Check out the scientist/reporter emails in the NY Times thread.

The price for all this help and access, is that the reporter had better report in a way that pleases his "helpers" and sources, or he will find their help cut off. Much of current "reporting" is essentially reformatting of press releases from their sources.

Fox News, the only legitimate News Network, reported on it.

BBC reported the hack, and that “opposite sides” were arguing about what the released information meant. But they didn’t report anything about the emails actually contained.

As far as I can tell, CBS, ABC and NBC haven’t touched the story at all. But it’s all over the web.

The failure to report is just going to help confirm to people the irrelevancy and the partisanship and bias of the MSM.

I didn't see your post before essentially saying the same thing.

Yes, a reporter's career is based on cultivating good sources over the years, people who will tell him what's going on and why. Of course, if the reporter wants to KEEP the source, he won't tell the READERS what's really going on, he will tell them what his most valuable sources WANT him to say. If the reporter is smart enough to avoid too-obvious insider trading, his access can be VERY lucrative, whether directly or by passing info along to other people who would be suitably grateful.

Look at CNN in Iraq under Sadaam, or Duranty of the NY Times "reporting" about the USSR under Stalin. They reported what they were told, without regard for truth, in order to maintain their "access". The reporter is in the business of selling newspapers, not telling the truth. Their business model depends on their readers never figuring this out.

She has been way out front on this issue amongst the current and recent crop of Presidential aspirants. It would be so nice to get a Sarah soundbite or Facebook posting that would summarize this fraud in a nice neat nutshell that would resonate with the man on the street. Time for a little gloating Sarah, let's hear from you.

The science prizes aren’t like the Peace Prize. ;-)

Seriously, I think the vast majority of scientists are honest and support the scientific method. They’re well aware that the entire credibility of science rests on it. Don’t forget the thousands of scientists who signed anti-CAGW petitions based strictly on the science.

When an a group of “scientists” subverts the scientific method to this extent, the scientific community will turn on them like a wolf pack that’s suddenly realized some of them are poodles. They have to, and it’ll be just about that ugly.

This WILL get legs. The usual suspects will start reporting on this next week, loudly. It is better to take this weekend and dig into the pile. Anything reported on a friday night is a news dump. The MSM should have reported it yesterday, but they didn’t. Now the news will break next week on beck, rush, hannity, and well, we all know what happens when that happens-olbermann, matthews, odonnell, and company go berserk, start screeching like scorched cats about the reports and more people tune into the other side to see what they are losing their minds about, especially if they are calling algore a liar and they have proof.

I hate to sound like a broken record but I'm skeptical that will actually take place. Science these days has become too much of a "follow the money" kind of business. The Grants are the source of the income for many if not most of the "Climate Scientists" and this story will not stop that money train.

And, if Al Gore can win a Nobel Prize, albeit a Peace Prize, so can these guys. The Nobel Prize process is just as corrupt as these supposed scientists from CRU.

I've known a few scientists. Some of them are honest seekers of truth. Others are just hungry for the next grant.

The danger to both groups is that, if the public starts to perceive research as just a fake PR effort for the agenda of whatever faction controls the grant process, this would create opposition from the public for spending government money for scientific research in general.

When scientists perceive their own careers in danger, they WILL turn on these guys.
