Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute
NY Times ^ | November 20, 2009 | ANDREW C. REVKIN

Posted on 11/21/2009 11:31:09 AM PST by neverdem

Hundreds of private e-mail messages and documents hacked from a computer server at a British university are causing a stir among global warming skeptics, who say they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change.

The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics,...

--snip--

In several e-mail exchanges, Kevin Trenberth, a climatologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and other scientists discuss gaps in understanding of recent variations in temperature. Skeptic Web sites pointed out one line in particular: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t,” Dr. Trenberth wrote...

--snip--

Dr. Trenberth said Friday that he was appalled at the release of the e-mail messages.

But he added that he thought the revelations might backfire against climate skeptics. He said that he thought that the messages showed “the integrity of scientists.” Still, some of the comments might lend themselves to being interpreted as sinister.

In a 1999 e-mail exchange about charts showing climate patterns over the last two millenniums, Phil Jones, a longtime climate researcher at the East Anglia Climate Research Unit, said he had used a “trick” employed by another scientist, Michael Mann, to “hide the decline” in temperatures.

Dr. Mann, a professor at Pennsylvania State University, confirmed in an interview that the e-mail message was real. He said the choice of words by his colleague was poor but noted that scientists often used the word “trick” to refer to a good way to solve a problem, “and not something secret.”

It's been a curious string of developments in the last two months, to say the least. Michael Mann is best known for his famous "hockey stick" graph in which he ignored the Medieval Warm Period, IIRC.

Govt-Funded Research Unit Destroyed Original Climate Data

The Dog Ate Global Warming

AP IMPACT: Statisticians reject global cooling

Copenhagen climate change agreement is impossible

P.S. An Investigation into The Hockey Stick Graph!

Check the fallacies involved in dendrochronolgy, i.e. tree ring growth estimation and temperature proxy data, as well as Mike Mann's ignoring of the Little Ice Age, especially the Maunder Minimum, when the Swedish Army marched across the frozen Baltic Sea and surprised the Danes into surrender!

Yeah, that’s the ticket. And scientists often falsify, hide and destroy data that doesn’t fit their agenda. LOL

Yes, it was a good statistical trick that solved the bad problem of the charts going the "wrong" way to properly serve the agenda.

Very neat and tidy, until caught.

I haven’t stopped laughing since I first read about this yesterday. The same type of correspondence could easily be found at any institution with alarmist leanings. This is just the tip of the iceberg. These people feel that the ends justify the means and will do anything to sell their point of view. Let the cover-up begin! Security is being tightened and email back-ups are being scrubbed everywhere this morning.

The story cannot be buried, only twisted, which is what they are trying to do. They, and the rest of the MSM, is trying to make this about the evil leaker, not about the evidence of criminal activity contained in the files. The evil leaker, by the way, is likely an insider who had had enough of the stonewalling on a Freedom of Information request - the files seem to have been pulled together in order to legally respond to that request.

Revkin is up to his hips in this. The Global Warmists were using him as their tie with the NY Times, which gave them a powerful instrument to dispute their opponents.

They butter him up as a “prestige” journalist in a couple of email exchanges quoted by John Hindraker at Powerline.

And they lied to him in the process. So, is he going to continue being used by these liars to disseminate their lies and attack their enemies? Or is he going to back off and try to disinvolve himself from complicity in this corrupt scam?

Well, I notice that he mentions that some people whose emails were included in the leaked material vouched that they were genuine.

I wonder why he doesn’t mention that HE was involved in these emails as well, and comment as to whether the emails in question are genuine?

It seems to me that honest reporting should require that, as well as honesty about potential conflicts of interest.

I do the same at times when I am documenting computer source code I have written or modified. "Trick" doesn't always mean what you think it does. Sometimes it just means "clever technique" that the author wants to call attention to.

Preemptive release in advance of an FOI-request grant.

Someone wanted to make SURE the info was released. Perhaps even a warmer who is sick of the arm-twisting, the back-handed and strong-arm tactics of the Michael E. Manns of the world (the 'Hockey Stick' was his baby).

Try this on for size:

The Russians did it on account of it will allow nat gas sales/use (it produces H2O and CO2 as byproducts after all) without C & T hindrance in the western/all the world -

- rather than the west do oil-shale technology development or -

- build more nuclear

By 'debunking' GW they can go ahead and make those nat gas sales (in volume hence good cash flow) to the west ...

Well, I only threw it out there to test your waters; it's not my fave theory either. Not even a close second to the first.

know why?

The DAY the FOI zip file showed up (was made known) was the day after (or was it before?) the day an FOI request made by CA was rejected (made known to the requester S. McIntyre).

Short story: Inside job.

Oh - I should have posted the link:
CRU Refuses FOI Request
2009 November 21
by stevemcintyre

Given the tumultuous events of the past few days, the receipt of yet another refusal to provide station data pursuant to an FOI request may seem a little uneventful. But the chronology of this most recent refusal is, to say the least, interesting.

In late July 2009, I appealed CRU’s decision not to provide then current station data, sending a follow-up letter on Sept 2, 2009, pointing out the inconsistency between their claims to be protecting confidentiality agreements dating back to the 1980s and their delivery of station data to the US Department of Energy in the early 1990s and posting on their website of station data versions in 1996 and 2003.

On Nov 18, 2009, I received the letter attached below from Jonathan Colam-French, Director of Information Services of UEA, turning down my appeal. The letter is dated Nov. 13, 2009. In the letter refusing the appeal, Colam-French says that he consulted a file on the matter.

Now consider the following chronology.

On Nov 17, 2009 at 9.57 pm occurred the first public notice of the 63 MB CRU file entitled “FOIA.zip” came at Jeff Id’s blog by a poster called “FOIA”, who stated:

We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps.

We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents. Hopefully it will give some insight into the science and the people behind it.

The file contained emails up to and including Nov 12, 2009 (the most recent is 1258053464.txt) the day prior to the date on the letter refusing the appeal.

I also have suspected that the release was not from a “hacker” but from an insider. The motivation could be altruistic... with the data mostly contradicting the theory someone decided it was time to throw these clowns under the bus... it might be some type of internal power play. It will be entertaining to watch the scientist rats jumping from the sinking ship in the coming days.

We all owe Steve McIntyre and the others who have kept pushing these guys, a huge debt. Politicians acting on the recommendation of “scientists” are responsible for tens of millions of deaths after taking DDT off of the market. Diverting food production and other precious resources into “green energy” has already doubled the price of food in many third world countries and is already killing off thousands in vulnerable populations.

Perpetrating this fraud on the world has real consequences. The responsible parties should be held accountable. Unfortunately, these people will all cover for one another and merely shift their attention to some other equally ridiculous excuse to attack capitalism. They have a great deal invested in this green nonsense however and this surely will help the pendulum swing back in the right direction.
