Hundreds of private e-mail messages and documents hacked from a computer server at a British university are causing a stir among global warming skeptics, who say they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change.
The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics,...
--snip--
In several e-mail exchanges, Kevin Trenberth, a climatologist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and other scientists discuss gaps in understanding of recent variations in temperature. Skeptic Web sites pointed out one line in particular: The fact is that we cant account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we cant, Dr. Trenberth wrote...
--snip--
Dr. Trenberth said Friday that he was appalled at the release of the e-mail messages.
But he added that he thought the revelations might backfire against climate skeptics. He said that he thought that the messages showed the integrity of scientists. Still, some of the comments might lend themselves to being interpreted as sinister.
In a 1999 e-mail exchange about charts showing climate patterns over the last two millenniums, Phil Jones, a longtime climate researcher at the East Anglia Climate Research Unit, said he had used a trick employed by another scientist, Michael Mann, to hide the decline in temperatures.
Dr. Mann, a professor at Pennsylvania State University, confirmed in an interview that the e-mail message was real. He said the choice of words by his colleague was poor but noted that scientists often used the word trick to refer to a good way to solve a problem, and not something secret.

Check the fallacies involved in dendrochronolgy, i.e. tree ring growth estimation and temperature proxy data, as well as Mike Mann's ignoring of the Little Ice Age, especially the Maunder Minimum, when the Swedish Army marched across the frozen Baltic Sea and surprised the Danes into surrender!
They NYSlimes actually printed the story! I guess they figured it has become so big that could only spin it and not bury it.
Al Gore proclaimed that the Polar Ice Cap will be COMPLETELY GONE in 5 years!

Revkin was mentioned as a blowin’ in the wind type of ally for the alarmistas. they were so far gone that they thought a NYTimes slut reporter was not pur enough.
One and the same. The author is trying to do some CmyA writing. Too late!
He said the choice of words by his colleague was poor but noted that scientists often used the word trick to refer to a good way to solve a problem, and not something secret.”
I want the job of the person who lays awake at night thinking up such b.s. This crap is S.O.P. anymore.

Yeah, that’s the ticket. And scientists often falsify, hide and destroy data that doesn’t fit their agenda. LOL
Yes, it was a good statistical trick that solved the bad problem of the charts going the "wrong" way to properly serve the agenda.
Very neat and tidy, until caught.
Now, they are spinning like dirt in a Gorenado*.
*Gornado: n. a mythical Category 8 tornado caused by Al Gore's mythical Catastrophic AGW.
I haven’t stopped laughing since I first read about this yesterday. The same type of correspondence could easily be found at any institution with alarmist leanings. This is just the tip of the iceberg. These people feel that the ends justify the means and will do anything to sell their point of view. Let the cover-up begin! Security is being tightened and email back-ups are being scrubbed everywhere this morning.

It’s only a step to neutralize the impact of the find. There are no concessions from the Left, ever!

Spot on! (Although I did make a similar point)
Socialist criminals and their 6 Trillion Dollar Scam
I said this to a customer of mine once when I was out showing her homes, she was Brass Military. LOL She said, "that was her job." ROFL (my referance was to all the B.S. paperwork involved in everything.)
Needless to say, I did not sell her a home. lol. Me and my big mouth, Oh well, it was worth it.
The story cannot be buried, only twisted, which is what they are trying to do. They, and the rest of the MSM, is trying to make this about the evil leaker, not about the evidence of criminal activity contained in the files. The evil leaker, by the way, is likely an insider who had had enough of the stonewalling on a Freedom of Information request - the files seem to have been pulled together in order to legally respond to that request.
Revkin is up to his hips in this. The Global Warmists were using him as their tie with the NY Times, which gave them a powerful instrument to dispute their opponents.
They butter him up as a “prestige” journalist in a couple of email exchanges quoted by John Hindraker at Powerline.
And they lied to him in the process. So, is he going to continue being used by these liars to disseminate their lies and attack their enemies? Or is he going to back off and try to disinvolve himself from complicity in this corrupt scam?
Powerline’s commentary has been great.
Well, I notice that he mentions that some people whose emails were included in the leaked material vouched that they were genuine.
I wonder why he doesn’t mention that HE was involved in these emails as well, and comment as to whether the emails in question are genuine?
It seems to me that honest reporting should require that, as well as honesty about potential conflicts of interest.
Keith is Keith Briffa, another alarmist with suspect publications.

I figured that would be the angle they try. Of course of this was shooting down some conservative idea they'd be praising the heroic whistle-blower.
More restricted data! Did someone tell the White House that this smells fishy? Thanks for the link.
I do the same at times when I am documenting computer source code I have written or modified. "Trick" doesn't always mean what you think it does. Sometimes it just means "clever technique" that the author wants to call attention to.
Société Générale tells clients how to prepare for potential 'global collapse'
Leading British climate centre hacked Somehow an "anonymous Russian server" was involved.
Climategate: the final nail in the coffin of 'Anthropogenic Global Warming'? "...this scandal could well be 'the greatest in modern science.'"
Some noteworthy articles about politics, foreign or military affairs, IMHO, FReepmail me if you want on or off my list.
All it takes is one guy who knows that a certain class of emails exist, and then the folks trying to delete them will end up having to deal with the law (which is pretty much the same in most countries when it comes to government financed research).

CRU hack an inside job?
CRU hack an inside job?Preemptive release in advance of an FOI-request grant.
Someone wanted to make SURE the info was released. Perhaps even a warmer who is sick of the arm-twisting, the back-handed and strong-arm tactics of the Michael E. Manns of the world (the 'Hockey Stick' was his baby).
Thanks for the ping!
I'm afraid I'm not following -- can you elaborate...?
Cheers!
I'm wondering if they're seeing some really awful economic and global cooling forecasts and washing their hands of climate alarmism.Try this on for size:
The Russians did it on account of it will allow nat gas sales/use (it produces H2O and CO2 as byproducts after all) without C & T hindrance in the western/all the world -
- rather than the west do oil-shale technology development or -
- build more nuclear
By 'debunking' GW they can go ahead and make those nat gas sales (in volume hence good cash flow) to the west ...
What’s C & T?
The Russkis want to sell energy from hydrocarbons. That’s no mystery. Presumably, they have the ability to do this hacking job without it being traced back to Russia. I’m not buying it so far.
Check the 1st link in comment# 33: "Société Générale tells clients how to prepare for potential 'global collapse'"
Various sources are saying we will see global cooling for the foreseeable future. Sunspots are scant.
This has to be most disappointing to the 'dirtworshiper' types planning on establishing their 'hot' age religion. The tentacles of this are mind boggling.
(Cap and Tax)
without it being traced back to Russia. I’m not buying it so far.Well, I only threw it out there to test your waters; it's not my fave theory either. Not even a close second to the first.
know why?
The DAY the FOI zip file showed up (was made known) was the day after (or was it before?) the day an FOI request made by CA was rejected (made known to the requester S. McIntyre).
Short story: Inside job.
CRU Refuses FOI RequestINSIDE JOB - someone with a conscience at UEA CRU (University East Anglia Climate Research Unit)
2009 November 21
by stevemcintyreGiven the tumultuous events of the past few days, the receipt of yet another refusal to provide station data pursuant to an FOI request may seem a little uneventful. But the chronology of this most recent refusal is, to say the least, interesting.
In late July 2009, I appealed CRU’s decision not to provide then current station data, sending a follow-up letter on Sept 2, 2009, pointing out the inconsistency between their claims to be protecting confidentiality agreements dating back to the 1980s and their delivery of station data to the US Department of Energy in the early 1990s and posting on their website of station data versions in 1996 and 2003.
On Nov 18, 2009, I received the letter attached below from Jonathan Colam-French, Director of Information Services of UEA, turning down my appeal. The letter is dated Nov. 13, 2009. In the letter refusing the appeal, Colam-French says that he consulted a file on the matter.
Now consider the following chronology.
On Nov 17, 2009 at 9.57 pm occurred the first public notice of the 63 MB CRU file entitled “FOIA.zip” came at Jeff Id’s blog by a poster called “FOIA”, who stated:
We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps. The file contained emails up to and including Nov 12, 2009 (the most recent is 1258053464.txt) the day prior to the date on the letter refusing the appeal. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents. Hopefully it will give some insight into the science and the people behind it.
We all owe Steve McIntyre and the others who have kept pushing these guys, a huge debt. Politicians acting on the recommendation of “scientists” are responsible for tens of millions of deaths after taking DDT off of the market. Diverting food production and other precious resources into “green energy” has already doubled the price of food in many third world countries and is already killing off thousands in vulnerable populations.
Perpetrating this fraud on the world has real consequences. The responsible parties should be held accountable. Unfortunately, these people will all cover for one another and merely shift their attention to some other equally ridiculous excuse to attack capitalism. They have a great deal invested in this green nonsense however and this surely will help the pendulum swing back in the right direction.
Thank you.
Will this lead to Nopenhagen?
Thanks for the ping.
