Cedar Creek, Texas (CNN) Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said Thursday that he hopes Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison remains in the Senate and acknowledged that he has spoken with her about challenging Gov. Rick Perry in the GOP primary.
Barbour, head of the Republican Governors Association (RGA), would not elaborate on his conversation with Hutchison, but did say he personally hopes Perry wins another term.
"I would just hate to lose Kay Bailey in the Senate," Barbour said at a news conference during the RGA's annual meeting. "She has been a great senator. I would just hate to lose a great senator like that when we have a fine governor."
Barbour did note that the RGA, which is the campaign arm for GOP governors, would not be taking a side in the primary. Still, this week's conference is being held in Perry's home state and he has played a prominent role as host of the event.

Kay needs to hang it up. I disagree with Haley. Kay has not been a good senator. I’d rather she come home to Texas, forget her run against Perry, and let Michael Williams (black conservative) run for her seat.
Why is this article from Cedar Creek, Texas?
I agree. Kaye had been a terrible senator. Send her home and let her forget about being governor. She’s too liberal to govern Texas.
I say let Elizabeth Aimes Jones run for her senate seat. I recently had lunch with Elizabeth and was very impressed with her. She is currently the Rail Road Commissioner.
I believe that the Republican Governors Association met there on 11/19.
You are preaching to the choir. It really worries me though that Barbour thinks Kay Bailey has been such a good Senator - is this the kind of Governors he thinks everyone should elect? Both she and Cornyn need to go. Texas deserves better representation.
Why do you think Barbour thinks she has been a good senator?
Interesting question. Also wondering why they chose to have their meeting in Texas. Maybe so the good old boys could give a thumbs up for Mr. Good Hair. Are there any other such hotly contested governor’s primaries coming up in March?? Don’t know a lot about Barbour other than some positive things coming from friends there after Katrina hit. Enlighten me.
The problem is that Dave Dewhurst wants to be a US Senator, and so do about 10 other people besides Michael Williams.
Roger Williams, etc.
Dewhurst will jump and there will be all these other dominoes falling, and the Democrats will run a strong candidate.
The best thing for 2010 would be to not give the Democrats an open seat race.
That means to have Perry win the nomination and KBH to decide to stay until 2012 and retire then.
“It really worries me though that Barbour thinks Kay Bailey has been such a good Senator”
... uh, you gotta read between the lines - Barbour is saying he’d rather *Perry* stay as *Governor*.... in a polite way.
My point is if Barbour wants Hutchison to do something for him, ie not contest the Tx Governors race of course he will say she is a fine senator. That is something most people learn by third grade. Whether he believes that or not is another matter.
I wish they would BOTH lose their jobs.
It’s a given that the boys are going to stick together and Barbour being the politician and southern gentleman that he is would never say anything blatantly disparaging to or about Kay Bailey. Add to this mix the support Cheney is giving to Kay Bailey and the fact that Sarah is supposed to come down here to rally for Perry should make it interesting. I can’t see Kay Bailey ever saying she’s changed her mind about wanting to be Gov. But I guess we’ll see.
