Oakland is the 3rd highest crime City in the US, according to new ranking (Camden, St. Louis. 1&2)

Bad news for Oakland today.

CQ Press has released their annual City crime rankings, and Oakland is even closer to the top of the list than usual.

The rankings are based on the incidence of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and vehicle theft in all US cities with more than 75,000 residents. Out of 393 cities considered, Oakland clocked in as the 3rd most crime ridden, topped only by Camden, NJ and St. Louis, MO. Other cities joining Oakland in the top 10 include Detroit, MI, Flint, MI, New Orleans, LA, Birmingham, AL, Cleveland, OH, Jackson, MS and Memphis, TN.

The past few years have seen Oakland playing musical chairs with St. Louis, Camden, and Detroit at the top of the list, ranking 4th in 2007 and 5th in 2008. Oakland's defenders are generally quick to dismiss the list, either questioning its methodology or claiming the City is just doomed to sky-high violent crime because of its demographics.

In their rush to repudiate the rankings, they tend to forget that Oakland's place at the top of the list is actually a relatively new phenomenon. Between 1998 and 2004, Oakland never even made it into the top 20 highest crime cities.

Former Oakland Police Chief Wayne Tucker had, to my mind, the most disturbing response to the rankings, when he called Oakland's 4th-place finish in 2007 "deceptive," because crime is concentrated in "two reasonably small areas."

Oakland and toss in Richmond and San FRancisco and Salinas. All run by dem regimes with big hearts.

Gangs have turned them all into killing zones. Age knows no immunity from the bullets.

I'm just guessing crimalien gang members are a large demographic and demonrat constituency group.

...I can tell you why Baltimore is on the list...it’s because black DEMOCRATS began to legally sieze power over three decades ago....since then they have demonstrated their capacity to govern.

I believe that it was last year.......truckers were going to refuse to go into Oakland. They need to do this again and close down the city. The only problem is that the people will go else where. They really need to close this city down and put a fence around it. If those people want to live like animals, treat them like animals.

No shocker here... Urban Democrats tend to be far more tolerant of blight and crime than people in the suburbs. You can always tell when a bunch of Democrats from the city move out because quality of life always goes into the toilet when they start voting.

Not so many. The percentage of African-Americans in the cities’ populations is the overwhelming explanatory variable.

Out of the top ten cities listed, Oakland is unique in that it does not have an enormous black ghetto (it still has one, it is just small).

For the other nine cities, the crime is coming from american citizens and they are mostly black. Illegal immigration has little or nothing to do with the crime there.

Ditto for Cleveland. Same for all the other cities but Flint, I think where they just elected a white Republican mayor this year after the "early retirement" of a corrupt white Democrat.

It’s actually kinda strange about the “reporting” dynamic. Houston would be at the top of the list but for some reason, the City can get away with massive under reporting of crime. Of course, every couple of years or so, the FBI comes in to do an audit and slaps HPD wrists about “mis-reporting” but by then, it’s all history anyway. Their biggest help in this ruse is the local newspaper which only covers the most outrageously pulbic type crimes; I have to I suppose because of the large number of witnesses. We hear gunshots every week; but the “clean up crews” that make up the remnant of HPD come out and scrub up the area before anyone much knows what happened.

The underreporting goes on everywhere.

We’re number Nine!!!
We’re Number Nine!!!
We’re Number Nine!!!

Jack-cough.... errr... I mean Jackson, MS is definitely minority run 90%.
In fact, the city just elected the previous do-nothing mayor, after taking a chance with newly elected do-nothing.
Last month, the city council, finally came to the conclusion, “we ain’t got no money”... after pissing away its rainy day funds over the last 5 years.

Oakland, West Richmond, East Palo Alto, Pittsburg (yes, that's how it's spelled), and South San Francisco have been predominantly black since World War II. Bay Area latinos concentrate in San Jose, Watsonville, and Salinas.

I live in downtown Oakland. Not long ago I walking on the sidewalk on 14th Street at around 11:30pm towards home when two 15-year-oldish black girls were walking towards me, talking trash, trying to intimidate me. One of them was carrying a large hammer! At the last minute they walked right into my path. I had to step away at the last second to avoid running into them.

I totally ignored them cuz they were itching for a confrontation with anyone. And who knows what else they had besides a hammer.

And then there were the January riots where I could see burning cars from the bedroom window.

Oakland is getting progressively worse. Businesses closing. More people wandering the streets. It really is a battle between thugs/gangs and their enablers at city hall, and law abiding citizens.

It doesn’t HAVE an enormous black ghetto. It IS an enormous black ghetto. Though, if you really look at it, Richmond is Oakland’s ghetto.

I wonder how far the ten million dollars a year that goes to the Black Democratic Caucus from the tobacco settlement would go to help the black college's funding there in Mississippi? I hear a lot of blacks screaming about the budget deficit but no one complaining about the tobacco hush/payoff money going yearly to the Ms Black Democrat Caucus. Jackson is a cesspool because it is demographically an Obama voting entity.

I dispute this part of the article. Maybe they didn't make the top 20 in those days in this survey, but Oakland has been a crime ridden hell hole since I can remember, along with Richmond, SF and other Bay Area cities.
