Playboy to outsource most magazine ops: report

Tue Nov 24, 1:40 am ET

(Reuters) – Playboy Enterprises Inc will outsource most of the business operations of its namesake magazine in an effort to curb losses, the Wall Street Journal said on Tuesday.

Playboy will turn over all magazine operations, except its editorial operations, to Florida-based American Media Inc, according to the paper. The deal reached last week is expected to be funded in part from Playboy's advertising sales, the paper said.

Playboy has about 30 full-time employees working in the operations that will be outsourced, and most will be let go, the Journal said.

Scott Flanders, chief executive officer of Playboy Enterprises told the paper that the five-year partnership would help return the magazine to profitability by the end of 2011.

Playboy Enterprises has been in talks with at least one possible bidder for the Chicago-based company.

Is that a real person, or is it something from Madame Tussauds’ Wax Museum?

The old man hasn’t been involved in the day to days at the magazine since the very early 90’s. His daughter(a huge lib) Christie ran the show there up till her retirement last year. Her tenure was on balance wasn’t all that successful Yes there was a resurgence in the bunny brand, but that more a combination of pop culture tastes and Hefner romping around with the three blonde idiots in that TV than any spectacular business decision she made. With the allure of the Playboy and it’s brand of hedonism fading again so is the fortunes. After Hugh dies I expect the Playboy brand to slowly slink into irrelevancy, this was the first step.

Actually, it IS a wax figure...
...and yet, healthier looking than the real thing!

Hugh Hefner with plastic bimbos in 2007

Frankly, he's had a long, but ultimately sad, life.

My cousin still gets it and I admit I glance through it occasionally.

The politics are as left-wing as ever but they, like so many, don’t realize that all the freedoms they claim to cherish have been curtailed, threatened or simply legislated out of existence thanks to a party and president they support(ed).

If “operations” include Playmate, um, interviewing, I think I can underbid American Media. Whom do I call?

It's a sign of desperate times in the mag business when the old pornographer
has to contract out everything but toon picking and airbrushing.
