From fodder to president

Looking toward the 2012 presidential primaries and election, one must ask, whether the Republicans can nominate a candidate that has the convictions of the founding fathers, the good looks of Kennedy, and the public relations of Reagan. Our current president has seen his favorable rating drop. He spoke of change but has proven himself a true blue liberal, even bordering on Marxist. So then, the question needs to be asked, Who will replace Obama as our national chief?

bordering on Marxist.

President Obama said that the Religious Right hold to the Bible and guns

I think he has gone well beyond bordering on Marxist, and you forgot the bitter clingers part of the quote.

"He spoke of change but has proven himself a true blue liberal, even bordering on Marxist."

How do know-nothings like this author get in their positions? First of all, the "change" Obama spoke about prior to the election was, in his own words, to "fundamentally transform the United States of America". ie, a Marxist transformation. So why would any patriotic American be the least bit disappointed that he hasn't (yet) delivered on all of his promises?

From the website of the Communist Party, USA...
(prior to the election)

"The Communist Party USA views the 2008 elections as a tremendous opportunity to defeat the policies of the right-wing Republicans and to move our country in a new progressive direction.

The record turnout in the Democratic Presidential primary races shows that millions of voters, including millions of new voters, are using this election to bring about real change. We wholeheartedly agree with them."

After the election....

A Landslide Mandate For Change

A breakthrough election
Congratulations on an extraordinary history making election!

We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-people’s movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all people’s movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.

The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and people’s unity.

There are thousands of experiences that we all have had in these momentous days, some large, some small, all of which express the enormity of change in thinking and readiness for involvement that is underway and that steels us for the battles ahead.

The tears of joy we all shared as crowds gathered to watch the election results here and throughout the world dramatize the new moment we are in.

July 1, 2009...

Change is Here, Change is Coming

Sam Webb, National Chair, Communist Party, USA:

Let me begin with a simple observation: If the last 30 years were an era of reaction, then the coming decade could turn into an era of reform, even radical reform. Six months into the Obama presidency, I would say without hesitation that the landscape, atmosphere, conversation, and agenda have strikingly changed compared to the previous eight years.

In this legislative session, we can envision winning a Medicare-like public option and then going further in the years ahead.

We can visualize passing tough regulatory reforms on the financial industry, which brought the economy to ruin.

We can imagine the troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan while U.S. representatives participate in a regional process that brings peace and stability to the entire region.

In the current political climate, the expansion of union rights becomes a real possibility.

Much the same can be said about winning a second stimulus bill, and we sure need one, given the still-rising rate, and likely long term persistence, of unemployment.

Isn’t it possible in the Obama era to create millions of green jobs in manufacturing and other sectors of the economy in tandem with an attack on global warming?

Can’t we envision taking new strides in the long journey for racial and gender equality in this new era, marked at its beginning by the election of the first African American to the presidency?

And isn’t the overhaul of the criminal justice and prison system – a system steeped in racism – no longer pie-in-the sky, but something that can be done in the foreseeable future?

All these things are within reach now!

I agree he has placed us on the road to Marxism. That’s not in question. I placed this part into the article because of the overwhelming support he garnered during the campaign. It wasn’t meant to be supportive of President Obama in any way.

No, actually I didn't, until now...

Perhaps I was a bit too harsh. It's just that I'm tired of people on our side being mushing about who and what Obama represents.

Ha! I can relate. I feel exactly the same way.

Notably missing from the list: ability.

I think I see what you meant. "Change", in the minds of his many duped and gullible supporters at least, was supposed to be a positive thing. Most hadn't a clue he was talking about destroying America as we know it. Frightening to think how many uninformed and/or just plain stupid people there are out there voting.

Ability? Obama got elected without any real ability.

let me make this clear. I am not endorsing anyone. But with the results of the poll in Iowa and her recent media coverage for her book, and those speaking on her behalf, that if she chooses to run, she is looking like a front running candidate for the Republican nomination.

I see no evidence that Palin lacks ability. But as between nominating someone "that has the convictions of the founding fathers, the good looks of Kennedy, and the public relations of Reagan" - and getting elected, on the one hand, and nominating someone with "ability" - and watching Obama get elected again, I'd choose the former.

A well-intentioned but inept leader can do a lot of damage - but nothing compared with what someone who is not well-intentioned will do, whether lacking "ability" or not.

The question is ... why is "ability" -- demonstrated ability -- not among the necessary qualifications for a viable presidential candidate?

Are you really comfortable with judging ability by the fact that there's no evidence that a candidate doesn't lack ability?

As you say, "a well-intentioned but inept leader can do a lot of damage." Just hoping for ability is not sufficient.

In a candidate who was the most popular governor in the country? Yes, I rather think I am.

Half-term governor, you mean? That says a lot, actually... not that you'll admit it.
