Perry campaign launches ‘Operation Intervention’ [Tx Governors race -- Odds & Ends]

The high command of Gov. Rick Perry’s re-election campaign is encouraging supporters to participate in something called Operation Intervention, which is an effort to convert supporters of U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison before the filing period begins Dec. 3. The goal of this operation seems to be convincing Hutchison not to run.

In a Saturday memo to “interested parties,” Perry consultant Dave Carney wrote, “Between now and the filing period December 3rd, I would like to ask you to engage in Operation Intervention by reaching out to Hutchison supporters and inviting them to join our effort. Just give them a little positive outreach to welcome those who had been misled early on by the conventional wisdom. It might just take an out stretched (sic) hand to get them to join our team.”

Then, in an apparent nod at Democratic candidate Farouk Shami, Carney continued, “We have a multi-millionaire running on the Democrat side and we need to unite our side sooner rather than later. Let’s try and get as many KBH backers on board before the filing period.”

Carney said Hutchison’s wavering on whether to resign her Senate seat, combined with her “face-saving” rationale to stay and fight, “has the stench of political death to it.” He also said there are more than 600 part-time field staff working for Perry around the state, and that Perry will be getting visits and support from major conservative national leaders. “In the next six weeks we will pile on the fuel to build a massive campaign,” Carney wrote. “As they say, we have not yet begun to fight. More major Texas organizations will be endorsing Governor Perry’s re-election and joining our campaign.”

Other Governor news from the past few days:

National pundit skeptical on White's chances in gov race

Nevermind about whether or why Mayor Bill White will switch to the governor's race. More importantly, can he win?

Larry Sabato, University of Virginia pundit extraordinaire, thinks not, especially if Kay Bailey Hutchison beats Rick Perry.

How do I know? His twitter posts yesterday, rearranged to make them more readable, cast some serious doubt on the chances of MBW.

...Houston Mayor Bill White(D) may be jumping in, replacing a weaker D.

This coincides with a nasty GOP primary fight between Rick Perry and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Speculation is that White will win b/c of split.

Background is media buzz about how TX will turn D because of Hispanic vote. Yes, it will-- but sometime between 2020 and 2050. It's 2009.

So Red TX will elect a D GOV in 2010--a year likely to tilt Red even in some Blue states? I'll believe that one when I see it.

Hard to see Hutchison losing in Nov. '10 under any circumstances if she's R nominee. I suppose it's possible with Perry(39% reelect in '06).

But I still remember talking to Hutchison & her GOP colleague, Phil Gramm, in a Senate meeting in Jan. '97. They both said, & I quote…

"We're the last Anglo senators from Texas." Well, it's 12 years later. Gramm retired and Anglo J. Cornyn has won twice. Premature prediction.

GUBERNATORIAL RACE
Path clearing for White governor run

Houston Mayor Bill White's wife, Andrea, served the visiting ambassadors sandwiches in the living room of their spacious memorial-area home as several hours of discussion set the stage for Monday's announcement that White is considering switching from a run for the U.S. Senate to a bid for Democratic nomination for governor.

As a result of that Sunday afternoon meeting, Democratic candidate Tom Schieffer — who was a Bush administration ambassador to Australia and Japan — announced Monday that he will withdraw from the race for governor to clear the path for White.

Schieffer urged other Democrats in the race to drop out and join him in support of White. “We simply must get behind one candidate who can unite the Democratic Party and offer a credible alternative to the Republicans,” Schieffer said. “Bill White is that candidate.” The mayor then held a City Hall news conference to say he will consider running for governor and make an announcement by Dec. 4.

“I think it's time that we have new leadership in Austin,” White said. “I'm disappointed at the failure to make real and tangible, significant progress on cutting dropout rates, improving school achievement, limiting tuition increases, fighting polluters, and I could go on and on.”

Several sources close to White said the decision to switch races was made at the Sunday meeting with Schieffer and his adviser, Lyndon Olson, who was a Clinton administration ambassador to Sweden. Houston lawyer Scott Atlas also was at the meeting. White insisted he still is in the listening stage.

she needs to get out of the race and step aside.
Who is after he job as senator, do we have a conservative for that seat in place or are we in disarray as usual in the GOP?

Leave Perry and she can resign while we get a decent conservative in place would be my dream

There is no nasty republican race. Kay Bailey will never win...she voted for the stimulus package and she undercut the border fencing...she is a rino and will garner very little of the vote.

Bill White is a walking turd as well.

Who is after he job as senator,

That remains to be seen at this stage as it’s still very much up in the air as to when and if KBH will actually retire. She has been all over the field will that part.

Orginally it looked like maybe LtGov Dewhurst maybe interested if she retired in the late fall as she said but has changed her mind on that now. Mayor White [D] of Houston was looking at running along with some others. But it now looks like White will switch and run for the Gov. in the D primary. It’s very much in a fluid state both for gov and senator as I see it.

If KBH would have resigned as she orginally stated then Perry could have appt a temp to fill the spot until a special election could have been held on May 8, 2010 to fill the remainder of her term. The players jocking for races under that senario now have to rethink their positions as filing for the Mar. 2, state primaries begin on Dec. 3, I believe.

It’s a mess at this stage.

97 Days and the Texas Primary will sort some of it out.

May well be but some one on the democrat side will come forward and be their nominee both in the Gov and Senate race. I don’t think they’ll win but they’ll try. Rats are ever surfacing with Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, etc and the Valley all being breeding grounds.

I’d love to see a primary race between Perry and Medina only. Kay Bailey is a Washington liberal and has no business governing Texas.

Texas has an emerging RAT infestation problem. I’m dreaming, but it would be nice to secede and export the RATs and import Patriots. We would be a Juggernaut as a country.

Yep Medina is at least not one of those that seems to think Texas owes her a job for life. Currently one wants to be King Ricky of Texas and other can’t decide where she wants to be but only that she wants to be somewhere in politics.

Medina is definitely my choice. Perry doesn’t seem very conservative with his history of trying to instigate the biggest private land grab in TX ie TransTexas corridor and then the situation with forcing 11 year-olds to be vaccinated again HPV with or without parenal consent? Not good. I love the Constitution and so does Medina.

Perry is a democrat from day one. He was bred and born a democrat and his father was an elected democrat. Perry was the Texas chairman for Al Gore for President in 1988. He’ll talk the walk but fails at walking it when it becomes time.

Medina probably won’t have the funds nor state name recognition to compete against either but I wished she did.. We need a change and looks like we screwed up when we amended the Constitution to allow someone to become Governor for life.

"Who is after he job as senator, do we have a conservative for that seat in place or are we in disarray as usual in the GOP?"

Do pay attention.

We have at least two excellent candidates, either one of whom could do a far better job of representing Texas in the U.S. Senate than Miz Kay Barely REpublican.

Michael Williams, for starters, is my favorite, but I'd be perfectly happy to be represented by Roger Williams (no relation... lol) too.

Thanks. You are correct. I was confusing the amendment change to four year terms with allowing for unlimited terms which was already in place from day one. But regardless I still think term limits are needed at both the federal and state level. Damn the Kings and Queens for life.

Wishin’ won’t win it, hard work will. Never succomb to defeat before going to battle.

You’re right, Perry is NO conservative and most people know it..they are just “settling” for him right now. It’s OUR job to make sure Medina is elected. Go to www.medinafortexas.com, donate and send out links to her amazing interviews to every single Texan you know. Grassroots will win it baby!

Yes, he made the official announcement on Thursday, Nov. 19 at his facility in North Harris County. He pledged something like $10 million of his own money to make the race. I already see ads about him on some cable channels.
