US Relinquishes Control of the Internet
The Guardian UK ^ | 30 September 2009 | Bobbie Johnson

Icann – the official body that ultimately controls the development of the internet thanks to its oversight of web addresses such as .com, .net and .org – said today that it was ending its agreement with the US government.

The deal, part of a contract negotiated with the US department of commerce, effectively pushes California-based Icann towards a new status as an international body with greater representation from companies and governments around the globe.

Icann had previously been operating under the auspices of the American government, which had control of the net thanks to its initial role in developing the underlying technologies used for connecting computers together.

Why should the USA give away everything we have?
Especially when it's in exchange for nothing?

I see a pattern here relating to all the various types of wealth and Computer, missile, nuclear, internet and other technology:

We think of it, pay for it, and build it, then through our enlightened "elite class" we give it away to New World Order Communists for use against the interests of the America that once was.

This isn’t as big as give-away as some might think. This is only about top-level domain registration. The US can set up our own domain servers, and the knee-biters in the rest of the world can set up their own domain servers.

As is being seen with the “Great Firewall of China” - there’s always a way around any bureaucratic nonsense on the ‘net. Once you can get an “IP dialtone” — the cat is out of the bag.

Does ALGORE know about this? I mean, he invented it, didn’t he?

I know next to nothing about how this wonderful net world works, but I was thinking that this might possibly make it harder for our own government to control it. IOW, it may get too out of hand to control, which might be a good thing.

Whoops ! I'll bet Al Gore's sorry he invented the internet now that those emails chronicling the forgery of global-warming data have escaped to the public domain.

This is only about domain names and it could be a good thing. There have been cases where judges have confiscated domain names in order to coerce web sites. Anything that reduces the power of government is a good thing.

The cost of booking a domain name will now shoot up dramatically! US should keep control over it.

I really don’t know the ins and outs of this, but to the extent that Obama equals Carter, maybe this is the Information Panama Canal.

It could just begin with domain names. Government has a tendency to grow...

If Obama doesn’t possess it, he can’t control it.

Not to worry domestically. As long as we control the pipe, servers are cheap and another network can be established with days. The fibre doesn’t care what it carries.

With the control of the internet firmly in the hands of a foreign entity, It will be EASIER for governments to spy on their own citizens. They can hire foreigners to do it without getting entangled in their own laws.

It will also provide a plausible reason to set up an international taxing authority to oversee the net.
