MOSCOW (Reuters) - The crash of a luxury train in Russia killed 25 people and injured up to 63 more, an official said on Saturday, and sources suggested it may have been an act of terrorism.
"Twenty-five people died in the accident," an official reported to Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu during a meeting televised by Vesti-25 television, hours after the crash.
Several carriages of the Nevsky Express traveling from Moscow to St Petersburg were derailed at 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) on Friday near the town of Bologoye, 350 km (200 miles) from Moscow.
Estimates of the number of injured ranged from 55 to 63 while Itar-Tass news agency quoted a spokesman for the regional emergencies authority in the Tver region as saying as many as six passengers could still be buried under wreckage.
Russian railways said the train carried 661 passengers in 13 carriages and that four of them were damaged. Regional prosecutors said two carriages were affected while Vesti-24 television said their correspondent could see three.
There were no official statements about the cause but several sources suggested it may have been the result of an explosion.
"A one meter (3-ft)-diameter hole has been found next to the railway track," Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source in Moscow's law enforcement agencies as saying.
"Witnesses heard a loud slap before the accident. All of this could point to a possible act of terrorism."
A railway official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "We are told this could have been a terrorist act."

So, as long as its not happening in the US...Reuters has no problem declaring “terrorism” without “waiting for all the facts”?
...someone’s not on the Hajj.
Now lets talk about Kwanza gifts.
I guarantee you if terrorists are behind this and captured by the Russians, they won’t get civilian trials and afforded counsel. One of the beautiful things about being on death row in Russia is that you don’t know the date you get executed. Prisoners have literally gone insane and committed suicide.
My prayers go out to the innocent lives that were lost, once again, by animals that have no regard for human life.
ricin works wonders as an unguent.
Not a very big hole for a train wreck. Anything on the train could have plowed that hole depending on where it was found in relation to the cars and debris.
One has to only move the track a few inches to derail a train.
Must have been global warming, there aren’t any terrorists.
Death toll at 39, many still missing:
At least they don’t hold much back when reporting certain events in the news. They came right out suspecting it may be terrorism.
It could have been industrial sabotage. Or mob-related.
Something tells me Vladimir Putin doesn’t spend many sleepless nights worrying about terrorists being waterboarded.
Putin is stupid to believe he can control Islamic radicals within Russia’s borders and the surrounding geographical area. Ain’t going to happen.
Prayers up for those who were murdered and wounded by these damn muslims.
His instructions were to destroy Grozny, and to ensure that it is never rebuilt ever again.
I don't blame the Russians for despising these damn muslims. This is especially true after the Beslan terrorist attack and murders, and now this terrorist attack and more murders on the Russian train system.
This attack probably will be blamed on Georgia.

Putin has no intention of controlling them.
He will simply kill them.
Here is what happened to the mastermind of the atrocities in Beslan.
It was a bomb.
when DONT the Russians(ie. Putin) blame everything on ‘terrorists’???
If the power goes out in Moscow, they blame the Chechyans just to keep the Putin Youth riled up and keep his seat warm at the Kremlin (careful, Dmitri, you are only sitting in Vlads chair until he takes it back in 2010).
Muslims make up a very sizable portion of the population controlled by Russia. Killing them all would be reminiscent of Hitler.
You think Putin will do that? (I know he’s capable of doing so but that isn’t my question. He couldn’t get away with doing it in today’s political climate. Plenty of countries are waiting for Iran to make a stupid move and open up opportunities for emasculating Islam!)
Unfortunately, we have a LOT of folks here who simply don't understand how KGB Putin and company operate. Too many people, even on our side, can be deceived by the simplest of tricks. It's really scary when you think about it.

No, he will kill the TERRORISTS, virtually all of whom happen to be mohammedans. Of the ones captured alive, many don’t live through their interrogations, and of the ones that are not executed after their very swift and brief trials, few survive in the prisons.
I’ve been in Russia and have talked with people there. They hate the mohammedans more than they hate anybody. More than they hated the Jews during the Tsar’s pogroms. A LOT more.
> He couldnt get away with doing it in todays political climate
In Russia’s current political climate, Putin would be the greatest hero if he decided to purge Russia of mohammedanism. I’m not completely sure why he has not done so, yet. Perhaps he needs mohammedans in places like Persia (Iran) to help advance his foreign policy agenda.
But his popularity would shoot through the roof if he were to drive the mohammedans out of Russia.
By the way, all of Russia’s official documentation now bears the Imperial Crest of the Tsar. Their passports have it on the cover and on EVERY page as a watermark.
The Imperial Crest of the Tsar consists of the Roman Double Eagle with the Cross of Christ and St. George slaying the dragon. It is the same crest used by Charlemangne.
You can see it here.
The mohammedans in Iran and Syria think the Russians are their friends. I don’t think they really know who or what they are dealing with.
“...all of Russias official documentation now bears the Imperial Crest of the Tsar...”
Cool. I didn’t know that. The Imperial governments were successful in driving back the Ottomans. No doubt people have a positive memory of that.
“The mohammedans in Iran and Syria think the Russians are their friends. I dont think they really know who or what they are dealing with.”
It sounds like Russia and Iran are using each other with the ultimate intention of eliminating one another at the end. Such good friends amd just like mobsters, ha!
Bernard Lewis wrote a book about Islam a few years back, and he covered a part of history with which I was unfamiliar - the fact that the Ottomans and Persians had occupied much of Russia/Central Asia at one time. They were eventually driven back, and not that long ago, either.
The Russians have long memories. Too bad America’s is so damn short.
Georgia is a very likely target, as well as the Ukraine, considering the dramatic rise in tension.
