Jaguar Land Rover had seen its sales rise 23% in the second quarter after its new models were well-received.

Owner Tata Motors said new products such as the upgraded Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4 had had successful launches.

...

Tata bought the British marques from Ford for £1.7bn in June 2008.

Sales volumes at Jaguar Land Rover rose to 44,300 vehicles from 35,900 in the previous quarter.

Aggressive cost reduction had also paid off, Tata said.

It’s interesting that Ford couldn’t make the same changes to turn Jaguar around. OTOH, the Jaguar spin-off by Ford gave it some much needed liquidity that probably helped it weather the financial storm that ended up sinking GM.

In probably five years (at the most) Tata Motors will own GM.

Simple!

Guys who drive new Jags are more likely to have girl friends with bodacious tatas.

But then you knew that!;-)

I think this is just because they are taking more of Government Motors sales.

They’ll have to buy it from the Zero Regime first.

I wonder who’s buying the new butt ugly Jaguars.

I’m not paying $83k for a car that looks like a Buick.

Jaguar, tata!

I dunno so much about that...I’m not a B cup,but I’d pass up a Jag for a Jeep (driven by a guy in fatigues) and a .50 cal!!! :)

I get the feeling that more women drive Jags than men. At least that’s what I see where I live where they probably sell the most number of Jags in the country. The new XF is actually quite amazing. If I had the money, I’d get one. But I don’t so I’ll just enjoy watching Jeremy Clarkson drive it.

I wouldn't think so if only because of the difference in price point of their products.

I think this is more evidence of what is being called a jobless recovery (i.e. the world economy is picking up at the top but jobs are not being added at the bottom).

Contrary to popular opinion, a jobless recovery, one in which an economy grows by increasing productivity instead of hiring...and leaves a large segment still unemployed, is quite possible. Those still employed see enough income to feed the recovery as those still unemployed watch as their unemployment benefits expire.

It’s a pity Jaguar finally produced a dependable car but put it in such an ugly shell. My ideal would be the ‘68 XJ sedan with 2008 innards.

I am very pleased that Tata bought Jag and Land Rover, kept them in the Commonwealth and didn't let them go to the ChiComs. Are Jag and Land Rover being sold in the States through Ford dealerships?

You may be very right about owning GM in years to come.

I currently drive an old BMW. But my 2 cars prior were Jeeps.

Owner Tata Motors ....

Tata's 'cars'....

Yes siree, that's always been my dream.

To be able to take the Bumper Cars from the from the Carnival and drive them on the Expressway. And then be CRUSHED TO DEATH by an 80,000# Semi going 80 MPH.

Sure beats dying peacefully in bed of old age.

Yep, Jaguar body style died with the 86 and 87 model. The rear end in 88 started looking like a Ford.

Looks like they are going on sale in America next year.

I see the main advantage over the jeep liberty as having a turbo charged diesel engine.

No, that wasn't till around '90. The rear end of my 89 looks much like the 88. Ford owned Jag by 1990.

Ford then started making their Jag rearends look like Taurus/Sable butts and in a couple years I couldn't differentiate which car it was from the back.

Jaguar XJ40 production
Prototypes 251
1986 3958
1987 33,064
1988 39,432
1989 32,833
1990 30,862
1991 17,190
1992 15,967
1993 24,910
1994 10,239
Total 208,706

The proportions of the '68 are what attracted me to this year Jaguar. I've owned four Jaguars in my life but not a '68.
My Jags, in order, were:
1960 XK 150 S
1957 Mk VII sedan
1966 E type roadster
1966 E type coupe.

Agreed. Any Jag pre-XJ is drop dead gorgeous and should never be used as a daily driver.

I especially swoon at the XKs,some MKs and almost anything they made in the '30s, and can't help wonder what sales of retro-look Jaguars would be like.

The XKE used to be my favorite till I saw the older ones. I love all the Jag models you’ve had.

Last local Jag concours I went to a XK 150 won best of show.

Got any Jags now?

When our son came into the world in '76, wife and I decided we needed a recreation vehicle for more than two people. We've owned various fishing and runabout boats since my Jaguar days. I have a pix of # 1 son in a blue snow suit at age about 3, sitting on the back floor with the rear door open on the E coupe. The car was white with red leather interior.
The most fun was the 150 S. It had the 4 speed box with electric overdrive. It was white when I got it. I painted it tomato red (as close to Ferrari red as I could find.) I ran it with twin straight pipes for about a year and finally the cops wised up and nailed me with an excessive noise ticket. Midas Muffler in Des Moines has a small flat glasspack and I fitted a pair of those w/ some large driving lights about a year before I sold it. Last I heard, it had been shipped to Holland.

Something about white vehicles, they all look better than the rest.

Perhaps with a little massaging, #1 Son can be hinted on returning the favor and gift you with a jag.

Like their electronics, Jaguar paint was not the best in the 1950s and 60s. The white on the 150 was dappled and milky when the car was five years old. Ditto the gray on the Mark.
I painted the '57 Mk VII a nice two tone brown/light brown based on a photo from a Jaguar book. It took a couple of passes along the fender to get the paint right; no chrome strip to hide an imperfect line.
Ladies in Iowa City thought it was a Rolls. I never corrected the impression.
