Peggy Noonan: He Can't Take Another Bow (Beltway Types Realizing Obama Is Just An Empty Suit)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 11/30/09

Posted on 11/30/2009 1:48:27 PM PST by caddystacks

From journalist Elizabeth Drew, a veteran and often sympathetic chronicler of Democratic figures, a fiery denunciation of—and warning for—the White House. In a piece in Politico on the firing of White House counsel Greg Craig, Ms. Drew reports that while the president was in Asia last week, "a critical mass of influential people who once held big hopes for his presidency began to wonder whether they had misjudged the man." They once held "an unromantically high opinion of Obama," and were key to his rise, but now they are concluding that the president isn't "the person of integrity or even classiness they had thought."

Just as stinging as Elizabeth Drew on domestic matters was Leslie Gelb on Mr. Obama and foreign policy in the Daily Beast. Mr. Gelb, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations and fully plugged into the Democratic foreign-policy establishment, wrote this week that the president's Asia trip suggested "a disturbing amateurishness in managing America's power." The president's Afghanistan review has been "inexcusably clumsy," Mideast negotiations have been "fumbling." So unsuccessful was the trip that Mr. Gelb suggested Mr. Obama take responsibility for it "as President Kennedy did after the Bay of Pigs."

He added that rather than bowing to emperors—Mr. Obama "seems to do this stuff spontaneously and inexplicably"—he should begin to bow to "the voices of experience" in Washington.

When longtime political observers start calling for wise men, a president is in trouble.

also raises a distressing question: Who are the wise men and women now?

So it begins...Elizabeth Drew is in the heart of the east coast elite...back in the seventies she wrote articles for the NEW YORKER, and became their Watergate expert.

Drew was a true believer...and if Barry has lost her, it’s a sign. The Gliterati have begun to notice that the clothes have no emperor...or whatever.

Obama has a few months to turn this around...if not, the Dems are toast next November...and guess who the leftwing establishment will blame?

I was at a gathering this weekend, and was talking to a fairly staunch Democrat. The guy told me he thought Obama was a one term president because of the economy. We both agreed: “It’s the economy, stupid”.

All the other gaffes of this immature baffoon would be overlooked, but the economy is something people can’t ignore, even if they want to ignore it.

The Obama administration is mishandling the economy, and if the Republicans could just somehow find a candidate, Obama will be in trouble, (I’m shocked I’m typing that).

I quit reading Noonan some time ago. She was openly for The One and tried to bash anyone who suggested that Barry would be the flippin socialist that he is. She voted for the loon, unfortunately, it is we in fly over country ( ie anywhere but DC) that pay the price

So many media types thought they were electing Josiah Bartlett from “the West Wing” as President, and they got Homer J. Simpson, instead.

You just KNOW the Hillary crowd is going to come unglued on them, at some point.

This is the second column in a week in which Peggy has reported on the doubts of others concerning Obama.

Whatsa matter Peggy? Thought you were on the band wagon. Are your opinions based on anything other than going with the pack? Why don't ya just come out and say that you thought he was wonderfulness personified, that you didn't look at his past, and you've screwed up?

You were on the band wagon.

"I was...wwwrrrrr....wwwwrrr....WRONG!"

I made a mmmmm...mmmmmisss....a MISTAKE!

I know, I know. It's hard to say.

As all the polls are now below 50% we may be approaching the tipping point where the liberal establishment and media throw him under the bus.

He himself seems a fairly chilly customer; perhaps in turn he inspires chilly support. But presidents need that rock-bottom 20% who, no matter what's happening—war, unemployment—adore their guy, have complete faith in him, and insist that you love him, too.

They're the hard 20 a president always keeps. Nixon kept them! Obama probably has a hard 20 too, but whatever is keeping them close, it doesn't seem to be love.
Let's not mince words, Peggy. It's race.

The wise men and women are now busy running the factories and businesses they moved to India, China, and Korea.

An obvious move that only a true fool would not see the necessity of at this point.

“When longtime political observers start calling for wise men, a president is in trouble.”

He has his “wise men”: Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, and whole college faculties full of Marxist ideologues in Political Science, Keynesian Economics, Junk Science, etc. What he needs is some experienced, responsible, pragmatic people. I can't think of any old hands from either the Clinton or Carter administrations that would do anything more than make things worse. Maybe Abe Burrows .....

Ditto’s This is the truest of statements...the Washington elite are mad because he has done to little to move left, not the anger we conservatives hate about his Marxist regime...if he is not smart enough, to hell with it he has many smart by hate leftist that could care less about his popularity if they get the power to expand their form of communism!

For us the distrust by both sides on left and right has allowed the independents, and fence sitters to move in our direction!!! they fear us getting our act together, and standing up with facts, and the truth about Conservative Policies, and why it is a Positive force for good, and will bring the best to all peoples, the Rich, are the leftist elities, not the conservatives!!! The dims are the greedy bastards! they know it! the Wallstreet of today are the thieves of wealth by the very policies they lobbied for with the dims! The good guys are just now seeing that to be silent is to give succor to the enemy of Freedom!

wow, I am so happy to see the Warmers, and Changers get their ass handed to them1 we must never be called the silent majority again! Viva las Honduras! Chavez take your puppy Obama, with you to hell

What happened to that Harvard sophistication the Vichy Republicans
were all so impressed by last year? Did it disappear with his birth certificate,
college thesis, and transcripts?
