GILMER — The Upshur County Republican Party has five additional elected officials. Five Democrats announced on the courthouse steps Tuesday morning that they are changing parties. Upshur County remained an East Texas Democratic stronghold until the November 2008 election. The county is about 75 percent Republican, based on the results of the 2008 presidential election in which Sen. John McCain received 11,222 votes to Barack Obama's 3,790 votes. A record 3,821 straight-ticket Republican votes were cast in the election.
