Hungry polar bears resorting to CANNIBALISM
The Canadian Press ^ | 12.03.09 | The Canadian Press

Posted on 12/03/2009 12:37:07 PM PST by rface

Some tourists on a tundra buggy tour of the Churchill wildlife management area on Nov. 20 were shaken and started crying after witnessing a male polar bear eating a baby polar bear, said John Gunter, general manager for Frontiers North Adventures, an area tour operator.

Eight cases of mature male polar bears eating baby bear cubs have been reported this year.....

Infanticide [ Baby killing ] occurs among polar bears when they run low on fat reserves and become hungry enough to resort to cannibalism [and murder ].....

Scientists predict that with later formation of ice in the fall and earlier breakup in the spring because of CLIMATE CHANGE!!!!!! may be part of the reason for the highest incidence of cannibalization he has ever seen.

Blaming this on AGW is truly hilarious.

Male polar bears, in common with most non-pack male carnivores, eat babies of their own species whenever they get the chance.

One of the theories is that a female who loses her cubs may be ready to mate sooner.

8 incidents of a male killing a baby bear. Did they also mention that the males kill young ones other than their own so they can breed with the females? Anything that comes from someone in the scientific field is questionable.

Oh bullsh!t on this absurd story....

This is more likely:

Male polar bears, like males of other ursids, will kill and eat dependent cubs (Hansson and Thomassen 1983; Larsen 1985; Taylor et al. 1985; Derocher and Wiig 1999). Although this activity does not account for a large percentage of the mortality, it is a curious cause of death in young bears. A male bear that kills cubs fathered by another probably confers some survival advantage to cubs he fathered by eliminating possible competitors for resources. Also, female bears undergo a lactational anestrus. By killing her cubs, a male interrupts that anestrus, and theoretically could breed with the female, inducing her to have his cubs rather than the cubs of some other male. Infanticide, therefore, is a mechanism by which males can increase their relative fitness. Polar Bears

So we’re going to dedicate our deepest resources to keeping a species from killing its own babies.

Have these people missed all the episodes of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom? Good, God, way back in the 1960s when I was a kid I learned that Male bears will often kill and eat cubs. I have seen film after film of Mother bears fighting of a rogue Males trying to get her cubs.

Heck back before Europeans arrived(and thus AGW) the native tribes used to leave the occasional babies behind because they would be too much burden.

When I was in Ft Churchill Ca in the 60s, researching the solar wind, when we first witnessed this is was horrific. How could daddy eat the kids? Turns out they do it all the time, that’s why mommy runs off and hides the kids.

Nature is not all snuggly and nice.

We also had a guide who carried a very big rifle just in case.

IIRC, the males in most bear species will kill a cub if they get the chance. Male bears are the biggest threat a bear cub faces. (Or a hungry Algore. A hungry Algore will scarf a good sized cub in one gulp.)

Something that I learned as a child - 40 some freaking years ago- that male bears of all types eat baby bears. (They’ll eat people too). Mama bears keep their young away from male bears for that very reason. They aren’t pack animals. They’re carnivorous and will eat anything they can get their paws on.

And Lions seek out and eat the young of leapords, oh the horror. But then nature is a horror show. Greenies are MORONS.

Count on hearing a ton of this nonsense this month.

Eric Holder will bring charges against against the offending bear, who will be brought to New York for trial, and sent to a Arkansas prison where new member of Arkansas Parole Board, Mike Huckabee, will recommend early release. Once the bear gets back to Alaska, Sarah will shoot him.

The reason that polar bears are eating each other is because their population has grown from 5,000 in the 1970’s to 25,000 today. Google it and you will find many sources confirming this.
More bears means less food per bear, so they either starve or have to find alternative food sources like each other. The reason for the increase is hunting was essentially banned.
Funny how these tourists were distraught in their tundra buggy. I bet they just returned from a visit to a local dump where the bears were feeding. Most of these tundra excursions do exactly that. They go where the bears are, and that isn’t out on some ice flow in the middle of the ocean!

While I am not a polar bear, I would like to take the opportunity to express my sadness at the continuing bear on bear violence that continues to plague the bear community. Therefore, I am going to enlist the help of the wildlife community to come up with real solutions to these problems. At Carniforum, we will try to come up with ideas that will reduce these violent incidents and will go hand in hand with our wildly successful seal-mulus package.

It’s more environmentally sensitive to drain your fried endangered species treats on hemp cuptowels. You can wash them in non-phosphate detergent and re-use them.

You are correct, but it is not a theory, I watched a discovery show on lions, the old male was beaten and run off by two younger males, they proceeded to kill every nursing cub in the pride. So the females would come in heat quicker.

I don’t know if this is true.

Honestly, it is pretty well known that a male will kill cubes to get the female to go into heat quicker and to kill off potential competition from future growth of the cubs.

That is why the female stays close and hides her cubs from males.

Now, if it was a female bear killing the cubs, that I would be impressed by.

I think this is a case where the tour guide doesn’t know what they are talking about and the reporter is a poor fact checker.

Maybe this is the whole AGW theory got started.
