Climategate: UN panel on climate change to investigate claims

The controversy was sparked by the publication of hacked emails on websites run by climate change sceptics, possibly in a bid to derail next week's Copenhagen conference.

The websites suggested that scientists had manipulated data to support a theory of man-made climate change.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), told BBC Radio 4's The Report programme the claims were serious and he wanted them investigated.

''We will certainly go into the whole lot and then we will take a position on it,'' he said.

''We certainly don't want to brush anything under the carpet. This is a serious issue and we will look into it in detail.''

Prof Phil Jones, director of UEA's Climatic Research Unit (CRU), has denied altering figures but has since said he would stand down from his post while an independent review is carried out.

The university appointed former civil servant Sir Muir Russell, former principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Glasgow, to head an inquiry into allegations of misconduct by its scientists.

''We certainly don't want to brush anything under the carpet. This is a serious issue and we will look into it in detail.''

Translation: We certainly do want to brush it all under the carpet. Our first attempts to either ridicule or ignore this have not worked out. Plan B is the bogus "investigation" followed by the release of the predetermined results showing that it makes no difference whatsoever to our grand scheme. That one has always worked before, heh, heh, heh, guffaw, snort..."
