Ignoring internet "trolls" is the best way to deter people who surf the internet picking fights and abusing people on discussion forums, says an expert.
ABC News Online this week scrapped its 'Open for Comment' panel in a bid to deter trolls, who constantly start arguments and hurl abuse at other participants.
The move has been criticised by some people, as has ABC policy to moderate comments before posting them to the site.
The role of moderator is to act as a filter to keep debate civil, constructive and on topic. But some feel it is a form of censorship....
He says the best way to make a troll go away is to simply ignore them.
"You can hardly go back into a thread and post if the last post is yours," he said....
"The good old motto is 'don't feed the troll'. Don't acknowledge them, don't give them attention, don't react because that's what they want."...

Trolls?
Many of the so-called trolls are actually what I refer to as “duty-drunks” who lie in wait, camping out, sometimes years on end on websites, forums, blogs—call them what you will.
These numnutz seek to lord it over passers-by, judging all, only they are right! Always they are on the best of terms w/site/forum management; sometimes themselves appointed as “moderators,” etc.
Just my opinion and observation; most actual trolls are as stated in the article—but many accused of being a troll are far from it.
Think about it.

Well, if you've ever run a board, you'd understand. I'm no fan of ABC, but I've "been there." And ONE person can screw it up for everyone. And they always scream "NAZI and FREE SPEECH" when you block/ban them. But I liken it to not being allowed to yell "FIRE!" in a crowded theater. I run a little blog, its mine, and I could care less what somebody thinks if they cross MY line ... "poof" they are gone. By doing this you are actually protecting the free speech of the many who genuinely post thoughts contraversial or not. But the abusive stuff should be banned ... without thought!
If you go over and read 2 threads in the Daily Kos, you'll see nothing but pure "trash mouths" there. I wouldn't mind listening to some of their weirdo thoughts, but I cannot stand the trash, and thank heavens FReepers can't either. My hats off to the moderators here who "keep it clean" ... and if we get out of line ... zap! (Do it for ALL of us).
