A civil war is breaking out within the left of the Democratic Party pitting the Congressional Black Caucus against the first African-American president.
The battle began when California Rep. Maxine Waters complained publicly about the administration's failure to do more to help minority-owned businesses in the current recession. (Translation: In the new stimulus of "jobs" bill making its way through Congress, they want a larger take.) It continued yesterday when 10 members of the Black Caucus refused to participate in a meeting of the House Banking Committee that was considering the bill to restructure financial regulations, forcing Chairman Barney Frank to push the bill through by the uncomfortable margin of only 31-27.
The latest shot in the battle was fired by Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., a card carrying regular of the Black Caucus. Faced with the need to investigate the gate-crashing at the White House during the recent state dinner for India, he chose to embarrass the administration by subpoenaing White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers rather than quietly negotiating for her appearance.
That Thompson's action was a deliberate slap in Obama's face is obvious (even though the media have missed it). Since when does a liberal Democratic committee chairman embarrass a liberal Democratic president by forcing a liberal Democratic social secretary (from Chicago no less) to resist a subpoena to appear at a hearing? Since he wanted to send a message to Obama and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel that the Black Caucus did not like being taken for granted.
The merits of the controversy are obvious. What possible reason would a social secretary, for goodness sakes, have for the assertion of executive privilege, usually reserved for issues of national security? Obviously, none. But Thompson chose his target well. He struck at the social core of the Chicago Mafia that runs the White House, probably striking within the Obama family as well.
You don't do that to a president of your own party, your own ideology and even your own race unless you want to make a point.
The friction between the Black Caucus and Obama escalated when Waters berated the administration for failing to rework a business loan from Goldman Sachs to the Inner City Broadcasting Corp. Inner City is run by Pierre Sutton, son of Percy Sutton, the longtime media giant in the African-American community. Two weeks after she raised the issue in a meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Emanuel, Goldman saw the light and restructured the loan.
Coming on top of liberal angst with the decision by the "peace" president to escalate the war in Afghanistan, this split with the Black Caucus comes at an awkward time.
But you pay a price when you mess with the African American Caucus and the Suttons. The Obama administration is feeling it. Its kind of fun to watch!
“Black Caucus” is, by pure definition, a racist group. Why not a “White Caucus” or a “Christian Caucus” or a.....
So, the black Democraticians have discovered that as they destroy capitalisam black owned businesses are being hurt. Shocking!
Answer; give them welfare.
The racist black commies in the house be dissed by the pimp-in-chief in whitey’s house. These people hate everyone and everything... except money and facist dictators... they love those two with all of their hearts... I am surprised they are angry... but then it is ALL ABOUT da CA$H!
The whole country is in a mess and as usual the Black Caucus can only focus on their racist agenda.
Are black businesses any worse off than any other businesses, and if they are, why are they?
Obama has been a nightmare for the whole country, not only for black business.
My sweetie teaches on the southside of Chicago; he knows the area and the people.
Given what he told me during the Dem primaries, what is going on now is no surprise to me. Let me explain.
Southside black voters were fans of the Clintons, as they have a long, verifiable record in that regard. Obama was never actually embraced by that community in his earlier political ambitions; he got himself elected by having others disqualified. The people themselves never chose him, apart from him having no other viable opponent. Obama has always been viewed by the southside Chicago crowd with suspicion; he’s not from there, he’s not “black” enough, and he not only did nothing to ever help them, but operated with those who would hurt them (Rezko).
The only reason that black voters in Chicago finally warmed to Obama in the presidential election is because they were pressed upon voting in a “historic” manner; once it looked like he had a chance to actually win.
My sweetie’s teaching partner was a classmate of Michelle Obama’s in high school. She is also a next door neighbor of them in the now empty Hyde Park home the Obama’s lived in.
Obama was (pre-election) viewed as “not one of them.” Rather thought a carpetbagger. Moreover, he’s thought of (even now) as lazy, self-serving, and an egomaniac. One phrase never applied to Obama in the hood is “hardworking.” He’s not. Far as they’re concerned, he’s the laziest person ever.
According to the people that live on the southside, all you need to know about Obama is this:
When the young man was killed in front of a school with a wooden beam, and everyone was up in arms, he sent Arne Duncan and Eric Holder to Chicago. They were supposed to take a stand on the violence. Instead, they dined in downtown Chicago with the usual suspects, never making a single appearance at the scene of the crime.
The sad part is that no one was surprised there. They are used to Obama being absent.
Good one Dick. Almost sprayed coffee on the keyboard. But true.
Remember, Obama is just a front for the New World Order. They picked him because they can use his blackness to shed criticism - he what? - Oh! You’re racist!
They don’t give a hoot for any black people or their problems. They’re just using him. They might even “throw him under the bus” when they’re through with him.
Do you ever read lamecherry?
Why aren’t we hearing from the White Caucus?
“Do you ever read lamecherry?
I don’t even know what it is.
Lamecherry is hilarious.
First off, the person who posts this is religious.
Second thing is, this person is a DC insider.
Third thing is, he (I assume it’s a ‘he’ because of some of the photos posted. LOL)
Fourth thing is, this character is a ballbuster.
Fifth, he names “names.”
Sixth, he is a military person, sounding fairly high up.
LameCherry is an acquired taste, to be sure, but it’s the first internet stop I make each night.
Go back and read some of the posts in the archive. Eye-opening.
Administration knows the election will hinge on those districts with a 5-10% voter differential
Black districts are way above that and safely democrat no matter what
Same tactic as FDR used—South which was economically in the worse shape but was solid democrat so he send all the FED $$$ to the western states which were close calls
And sadly 91% of theose very same people will pull the lever for Zero in 2012... and the beat goes on.
Don’t be too sure, my friend.
All their lives, they were told “if only we had a black president.....” They have one, now.
If he fails to improve their station in life, he’s toast. And he can’t, of course, because he’s a Marxist.
Even these folks recognize bad news when they see it.
I would love to see this happen, however, the very fact that they are looking to Zero (or any other politican, bureaucracy, or government program) to improve their lives, suggests it is unlikely.
Nevertheless, I think you are discounting the fact that they are mad.
And feel as though they have been “had.”
I’ll keep you folks updated on southside Chicago.
The CBC got ticked off at Clinton for welfare reform, but still remained his lap dog for the remainder of his term.
Do they really believe now that he's President he is going to suddenly embrace capitalism and do things that will help business, especially small businesses, recover?
How much longer will people twist themselves into knots trying to blame Bush or obama's experience for his "mistakes" in office?
The mistake is assuming obama has motives he doesn't have.
obama is doing what he is doing on purpose because it is who he is and it's what he believes.
