Max Baucus, chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, recommended that the White House nominate his girlfriend as a U.S. attorney in Montana, his office announced late Friday night.
Earlier this year, Baucus recommended that the White House consider Melodee Hanes and two other names for the U.S. attorney post at the same time that the senator was carrying on a romantic relationship with Hanes, who had been his state director. Baucus was separated with his wife at the time when the two began their involvement, according to a source familiar with the situation, and now the two are divorced from their spouses and live together on Capitol Hill.
Baucus office contends that Hanes was recommended because of her qualifications and that the relationship had nothing to do with her nomination to the position or their respective divorces from their spouses.
While her personal relationship with Senator Baucus should in no way be either a qualifier or a disqualifier for the position, during the nomination process and after much reflection, both Senator Baucus and Ms. Hanes agreed that she should withdraw her name from consideration because they wanted to live together in Washington, DC, Ty Matsdorf, Baucus spokesman, said in a statement.

R-I-G-H-T. No wonder he pushed the healthcare scam—he wanted a big job for his girlie friend.
“Hanes was recommended because of her qualifications “
"Both of them." ;)
People don't dump information after 11:00 pm on a Friday night when it's good news. But, I won't hold my breath for Matt and Meredith to talk about this like they have Ensign or Sanford - where it's NOT in alleged in either of those two cases that Sanford or Ensign used their position of influence to financially benefit their whores.
Well, doesn’t she look like the cat that ate the canary. He left wife #1 and wife #2—what makes her think she’s so special? I guess after a certain point they figure the guy’s too old to attract anyone younger so they have it made.
Shouldn't we make that judgement during the swimsuit competition?
MT needs a clean-up in the left aisle.
Be careful who you want to hang. Baucus was one of the two Montana Senators that turned around the DOD decision to stop the sale of surplus military brass into civilian hands when our “Conservative” Senators were sitting on their thumbs. Any friend of the second amendment is a friend of the constitution regardless if they are an immoral democrat or not, and we have precious little of them in Washington.
As long as the guy can pass out plum fed jobs, there is no such thing as too old.
Max Baucus, chairman of the (powerful Senate Finance Committee). No questions here.
these days showing some knee equals qualifications.
Just out of curiosity, I looked at CNN.com and MSNBC.com to see if they’re covering the story - not a single word on CNN.com, but surprisingly, MSNBC.com has it on the front page, and in the politics section, FWIW.
Since he was banging the old broad while still married, when do we get to see his emails.
Oh, and will other women come forward? Paging the National Enquirer....
Baucus needs to go bye-bye.
Wake up Montana!
“Baucus office contends that Hanes was recommended because of her qualifications”
What qualifications are we talking about, scum?
If only this were another Tiger Woods gal. Then again, it’s a democrat and all he did was break basic Human Resources guidelines and probably the law - quid pro quo and all that...
Baucus won re-election in 2008 by a 73-27 margin. It’ll be 2014 before that POS has to stand again.
Guilty, with the 6th amendment brought up by the defense attorney.
When a Republican does this, he is expected to resign. When a dem does it, he gets pats on his back from the rest of his corrupt, cheating buddies and a pass to go forth with more of the same..
No, not all of them. There is probably more corruption among politicians than the general public, though. Just because when you mix money, power, and government, the corruption seems to rise to the surface.
Note to Montanans: What could have made you elect a guy who is this low on the morality scale and is attempting to bankrupt our country with his idiotic, insane version of “health care”? Please do not foist this loser on us again!
