(D-MT) Baucus nominated girlfriend for U.S. Attorney job (nothing to see here folks)

Max Baucus, chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, recommended that the White House nominate his girlfriend as a U.S. attorney in Montana, his office announced late Friday night.

Earlier this year, Baucus recommended that the White House consider Melodee Hanes and two other names for the U.S. attorney post – at the same time that the senator was carrying on a romantic relationship with Hanes, who had been his state director. Baucus was separated with his wife at the time when the two began their involvement, according to a source familiar with the situation, and now the two are divorced from their spouses and live together on Capitol Hill.

Baucus’ office contends that Hanes was recommended because of her qualifications – and that the relationship had nothing to do with her nomination to the position or their respective divorces from their spouses.

“While her personal relationship with Senator Baucus should in no way be either a qualifier or a disqualifier for the position, during the nomination process and after much reflection, both Senator Baucus and Ms. Hanes agreed that she should withdraw her name from consideration because they wanted to live together in Washington, DC,” Ty Matsdorf, Baucus’ spokesman, said in a statement.

"his office announced late Friday night"

People don't dump information after 11:00 pm on a Friday night when it's good news. But, I won't hold my breath for Matt and Meredith to talk about this like they have Ensign or Sanford - where it's NOT in alleged in either of those two cases that Sanford or Ensign used their position of influence to financially benefit their whores.

Yeah, sure. Both of them messing around, and now divorced and living together. What is wrong with politicians in general? Are they all immoral?

Well, doesn’t she look like the cat that ate the canary. He left wife #1 and wife #2—what makes her think she’s so special? I guess after a certain point they figure the guy’s too old to attract anyone younger so they have it made.

Shouldn't we make that judgement during the swimsuit competition?

Be careful who you want to hang. Baucus was one of the two Montana Senators that turned around the DOD decision to stop the sale of surplus military brass into civilian hands when our “Conservative” Senators were sitting on their thumbs. Any friend of the second amendment is a friend of the constitution regardless if they are an immoral democrat or not, and we have precious little of them in Washington.

Just out of curiosity, I looked at CNN.com and MSNBC.com to see if they’re covering the story - not a single word on CNN.com, but surprisingly, MSNBC.com has it on the front page, and in the politics section, FWIW.
