Subway airflow tests to prepare T for possible terror attacks

SNIPPET: "A team of researchers convened by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began a series of tests today at 20 MBTA stations to determine how airborne contaminants would spread in a terrorist attack on Boston's subway system."

SNIPPET: "The findings will help guide the design of future detection systems and help strengthen evacuation, ventilation, and other emergency response plans on mass transit across the country. "We hope to use the data from the two to come up with a model to predict the behavior (of chemicals) in other subway systems," Lustig said."

Gee, how many years has it been since Japan was hit by that terrorist subway chemical attack. (Serin gas.) And just now the T is mulling over how air flow acts in the subway. Good job. Better late than never.

Now if the T could only tweak the airflow so as to minimize the urine smell at Andrew station...

It was something like 1994 that Japan’s ShinRiKyou attacked the Tokyo subway system with Sarin. The incident killed only 5 or so, but sent something like 10,000 scared people to the hospital, perhaps more. The Sarin development effort was performed entirely via contributions from religious believers. The group’s twisted teachings said that they were trying to bring about Armageddon.

They had also been VERY active in trying to gas all of TOkyo —they were going to use Anthrax, and a Russian Mi-26 helicopter that they had somehow purchased.

In fact, they had performed several previous attacks, but these went undetected, as the gas dispersed too fast to claim victims. For this reason they attacked the subway —lots of people, and the air is confined, and almost in an arrested state.

In fact, the group had twice as many believers in Russia as they had ever gotten in Japan.

There were other details about the case, but they’re even scarier, and they would sound FICTIONAL if I typed them here.

No, it wouldn’t sound fictional to me.

Remembering the Tokyo Subway Attacks

SNIPPET: “Fourteen years ago today Aum Shinrikyo released sarin gas on the Tokyo subway.”

SNIPPET: “A final note - Aum Shinrikyo operatives, on the order of the cult’s leader, underwent flight training in Florida. There is no evidence that they made any attempts to use this training. It is just an odd, disturbing coincidence.”

Truth is stranger than fiction, many things which are coming to pass would have been laughed at as impossible two years ago.

The case got weirder and weirder, and the scary turn when it turned out that they had recruited a couple Russian believers who had security clearances at an extremely sensitive Russian weapons lab.

Th group in Japay regularly trained with airsoft gear, and they were trying to manufacture AK’s —in Japan. This was to prepare for armadeggon, OK?

Remember that short time after the cofall of the Berlin Wall, when it seemed that everything in the former USSR (particularly military gear) was for sale? Well I’m not sure you’re going to believe this, but some of their people were in late-stage negotiation for purchase of a Russian submarine —an Oscar, I believe, not a Kilo.

I remember they also had a believer who had been an accomplished marksman in the SDF —this guy shot a DA who had been the source of some legal aggravation for the group.

The spiritual leader of the group —Asahara Shoko— had run for mayor of Tokyo before the attacks (they were well-funded), but after all these attacks transpired he was arrested, tried, and condemned to death. I do not know if he was ever executed, although it is a fact that the authorities are under no obligation to disclose (even to the family) when or if they have done so.

They did conduct a follow-up attack after the subway incident —this was on Tokyo Station. The gas was suspended in a clear liquid in a transparant bag. The bag was placed into a garbage bin in a station men’s bathroom, and the bin was set on fire (in fact this is common, since some folks throw their cigarette residuals in there). The idea was that the fire would dissolve the bag, thereby releasing the bag contents, and then into the air of the (enclosed) station.

The abortive attack occured during peak return rush hour —something like 20,000 people are usually in that station at that hour, which was something like 5:00 pm (it has been awhile for me).

A cleaning lady simply put the fire out —if she had not it is likely there would have been fatalities, and it is certain that just as before, tens of thousands would have had to go to the hospital.

They also abducted a different DA who had investigated allegations that the group had been brain-washing their believers.

They kidnapped the lawyer and his whole family from their home. They tortured and killed them, cooking their bodies in some kind of industrial microwave.

Those were some very sick suckers...and yes, jihadis and others still do consider mass transits targets (from my reading).
