Boeing plans to make all the parts for the 787 Dreamliner currently produced in the Puget Sound region at a second location so that the second final assembly line being set up in North Charleston, S.C., can operate independently.
Local Boeing workers have long complained that only the vertical tail fin of the 787 Dreamliner is built in the Puget Sound region.
But now even that small claim to uniqueness is going to be shared, as Boeing continues to turn the screws on the Machinists union after their two-month strike in 2008.
The company said Monday it plans to use suppliers to replicate production of all 787 parts produced in its Puget Sound-area factories — in Auburn, Everett, Fredrickson — and in Portland, so that a second final-assembly line being established in North Charleston, S.C., can operate independently.
The plan includes setting up a second Boeing facility or finding a supplier to build the vertical tail fin, now made in a state-of-the-art composites-manufacturing center in Frederickson, near Tacoma.
But it appears likely the tail fin will be built by Boeing in Charleston in a building close to the second assembly line for which ground is being cleared.
Boeing spokesman Jim Proulx cited strikes in the Puget Sound region as a major factor in the decision. With a second supplier for every part, Boeing potentially could continue producing Dreamliners in South Carolina even if the Machinists went on strike here.
"Repeated labor disruptions have affected our performance in our customers' eyes," Proulx said. "We have to show our customers we can be a reliable supplier to them." The second production line "has to be able to go on regardless of what's happening over here," he added.

Correct, looks like Boeing is willing to invest big money so they won’t be dependent on unions, kind of an insurance policy.

just remember atlas shrugged, when the producers started failing the takers, the takers passes a “you can’t quit” “you can’t fire” law.
Obama and the socialist thugs around him will try and regulate away closing down the union plant.
I’ll increase my support for any company that 1) moves out of a blue state whilst simultaneously 2) screwing the corrupt unions.
Unions used to have a use - for the workers.
Unions still have a use - for the democrats.
Just one more gradual step for Boeing’s eventual move to somewhere else other than Washington State. Since Wa has already killed the apple industry, farmers ingeneral, the timber industr, and commercial fishing - that will leave them with the retirement industry, the tourist industry, and the trust funders. And, of course, the growing criminal/drug industry.
As a global company, Boeing cannot be held hostage by union greed or supplier incompetence. They are just doing what an rational business would do, organizing to best serve their customers.
The IAM has no one to blame but themselves.

Hey Boeing employee unions, think about hitching a ride with the SEIU. They have the support of the illegal president.
The union basically shot themselves in the butt.
Boeing pretty much offered them guaranteed employment for ten years and to NOT move the work to Carolina IF the Union would give them an assurance of no strikes for ten years.
The union would not take it. Idjits. Sounded like a pretty sweet deal to me!

The citizens of Wa have no one to blame but themselves - as their economy crashs... as it did in the 60’s when Boeing shut down.
Aluminum smelters - yes but we were all glad that the Tacoma Aroma was gone - going there after the shut sown was oddly strange without the aroma.
is from the Simpson Kraft mill. Smelters do not generally create the same “rotten eggs” smell of the sulfuric stench that emanate from chemical processing of pulp. I do believe Simpson has installed some pollution equipment to mitigate much of the smell. Kaiser closed the smelter in Tacoma in 2000.
There were a host of smelters along the Columbia who took advantage of the low cost of kilowatts provided by BPA and the dams on the river. Thousands of high paying, good industrial jobs were lost when the price for this critical component of smelting aluminum increased. Locke was instrumental in seeing this happen or did nothing to prevent it. He is the commerce secretary now BTW. What a joke.
The country wants a robust economy with good paying jobs? Quit chasing them away by stupid government policies and actions.

Please, we don't want them to move here. If they do, they don't need to bring their union mentality here. We have enough people to do the job ourselves, thank you very much.
That was the pulp plants, bud. Had nothing to do with the aluminum smelters.
