Bishops urged to be tough on pols who would pay for abortion

Abortion opponents are urging local Catholic bishops to use the power of Communion to influence the national health care debate by withholding the sacrament from politicians who favor federal dollars for abortion.

Randall Terry led five protesters Friday in front of Sen. Robert Casey's office, Downtown, and St. Paul's Cathedral in Oakland. He is founder of Insurrecta Nex, Latin for "revolt against killing," a Washington group opposed to abortion. Casey is a Catholic.

"Part of what we're doing on this tour is calling on the bishops to obey the teachings of the church and to enforce them," Terry said. "This bishop needs to tell Casey ahead of time if you vote for this bill — and there's killing in the bill — you will be denied Communion."

Bishops David A. Zubik of the Pittsburgh Diocese and Lawrence Brandt of the Greensburg Diocese said in separate statements they will not urge their priests to deny Communion to politicians who support abortion.

In a statement released yesterday, Zubik said he opposes any legislation that would force American taxpayers to pay for abortions.

I am posting this now because I am very angry about Casey's role in this. I stupidly voted for him after getting fed up with Santorum. I implore the Pennslyvania freepers to flood his office tomorrow asking him not vote for this monstrosity. But I admit to not being very optimistic.

Bishops who DO NOT DENY Communion to ANY Catholic who is weak-kneed and pro-choice are part of the problem. They are the sad and downtrodden. They need to leave; get out of the way. Their misunderstanding is milquetoasted and they are not following the Church's teachings. This is just basic stuff. Long live Father Pavone and ALL others who speak the truth.

I have been Catholic for 50 years. I pray for any confused Catholic that had voted for oBama. They need help.

The Church has the power to stop abortion.

Someone was reading Bill Donahue’s publication to me tonight, in which he said any priest who called someone out on abortion would be criticized. I don’t think so. The bishop who called out young Kennedy wasn’t.

If the pols were personally paying for it, that would be bad enough. But they are extorting it from the general taxpayer.

Catholics sure could stand to wink less at it.

Interesting post since the Vatican has already spoken. You can't tell me these Bishops don't know about it, either!

I’m not sure this is a Vatican dictum — just the opinion of one archbishop.

You voted for Casey over Santorum and you’re surprised that you got a Democrat?

My bad. Don’t forget I live in Pennsylvania. I was once a democrat, a very long time ago. But I voted for Ronald Reagan my first presidential election. You are right about the attitude leading to the election of Obama. I have just never been crazy about Santorum, and was just reading a thread about him yesterday calling him a RINO, where he indicated Palin would have some “explaining” to do if she runs for president, following his pronouncement that he is “exploring a run.” I am very strongly pro-life and foolishly took Casey at his word.

"The Church has the power to stop abortion."

Most definitely.

And no Catholic should have EVER voted for oBama. The words have to be crystal clear next time. It's crystal clear when one weighs right v wrong.
