Breaking News: Pakistan Reportedly Detains Five D.C.-Area Muslims on Suspicion of Terror

IPT News December 8, 2009 **Updated December 9, 9:00 a.m. EST

A Pakistani newspaper reports the arrest of five foreign nationals after a raid in a town called Sargodha. The raid took place at the home of a member of the Jaish-e-Muhammad, a Pakistani movement designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2001.

According to the report, "The DPO told that these people had been living in Sargodha since Nov 30 and it was quite a possibility that they were engaged in acts of terrorism." It names the five as Ahmed Abdullah, Waqar Hassan Khan, Eman Hassan, Yasir and Rami Zamzam and describes them as two Yemenis, an Egyptian, a Swede and a U.S.-born Pakistani.

Congratulations pc America. We are now exporting our own homegrown Jihadis.

The US is beginning to remind me of Londonistan. We gave and are giving refuge to Muslims who are turning around and biting us in the a**.

The FBI’s Washington Field Office issued the following statement:

“The FBI is working with families and local law enforcement to investigate the missing students and is aware of the individuals arrested in Pakistan. Thanks, two of the arrested were at the home of their uncle Khalid Chaudry who works for the Highway Dept in Saraghoda, Pakistan.

Samirah Ali, president of Howard University’s Muslim Student Association, said the FBI contacted her last week about Zamzam.

Ali said she’s known Zamzam for three years and never suspected he would be involved in radical activities.

“He’s a very nice guy, very cordial, very friendly,” Ali said, adding that he has a bubbly personality.

“Pakistan: Detained Americans Admit Jihad Plan”
Thursday, December 10, 2009

SNIPPET: “ISLAMABAD — Five Americans arrested at a house linked to a militant group in eastern Pakistan have told investigators they came to the country to take part in “jihad” or holy war, police said Thursday.”

SNIPPET: “Three of the arrested Americans are of Pakistani descent, one is of Egyptian descent and the other has Yemeni origins, police officer Tahir Gujjar said.

Two other police officials said Thursday the men were cooperating with investigators after first giving conflicting statements. Investigators seized a laptop computer along with extremist literature from the house.”

They have the right to remain silent...Anything they say can and will be used against them in a court of law...They have the right to an attorney, if they cannot afford an attorney, one can be appointed to them...

Do they understand these rights???

You betcha, and as we have seen in the past all they have to do to muck up the works is say they were not afforded their rights as citizens of this country, even though they were arrested and not read their Miranda rights right on the spot, because Paki cops are not required to read anything, much less anything associated with American law...

That’s why I say, whatever they may know, it can’t be that big a deal, really, I firmly believe that...

So let them stew over there for a while...

Just my opinion...And no offence intended toward you...;-)

Updated Statement Regarding Investigation of Missing Students

The FBI’s Washington Field Office issued the following statement:

Five missing individuals from the Washington, D.C. area have been located and are in the custody of Pakistani police. The five men were detained by Pakistani authorities on December 9, 2009 after they came to the attention of police.

The men were detained without incident and four were found to have U.S. Passports. The U.S. Embassy was contacted. An FBI special agent and two other U.S. government officials from the Embassy have spoken with some of the men. Although positive identification is still pending, the FBI believes they are the missing individuals.

The FBI was attempting to locate these individuals after learning of their disappearance. Discussions concerning their possible return to the United States are still underway.

“NY Times: D.C. Students Aimed for Pakistani Tribal Areas”
by IPT News • Dec 10, 2009 at 10:16 am

SNIPPET: “The Times reports the group communicated with terrorists linked to Al Qaeda through YouTube posts before leaving the U.S. nearly two weeks ago.

They were arrested in a home belonging to one of the missing men’s uncle, who is affiliated with the Jaish-e-Muhammad terrorist group. The father of Umar Farooq, one of the students, reportedly was arrested, too. The Times cites local Police Chief Usman Anwar:

“The five men bonded together in the jihadi cause, watching jihadi video clips on You Tube that showed attacks by the Taliban on allied forces in Afghanistan, he said. The group also maintained a common e-mail address, Mr. Anwar said. Employing a technique widely used among militants, they left their comments in the ‘draft’ box of the e-mail address so that they could all easily read the comments.”

“Five Muslim Americans detained in Pakistan were en route to Waziristan”
By BILL ROGGIO
December 10, 2009 4:45 PM

SNIPPET: “The is plenty of interesting information available on the five Americans detained in Pakistan who were trying to link up with al Qaeda and allied terror groups within Pakistan. The radicalization process and recruitment via the Internet by “Saifullah,” a known jihadist, will certainly raise some eyebrows. Ultimately, it seems all roads to jihad pass through Pakistan, and more specifically, Waziristan. As The New York Times reported, the five were planning to head to Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan:

The men appeared to have come to the attention of “Saifullah” — an Islamic militant with links to Al Qaeda — through their YouTube activities, the police chief said. Saifullah traced their e mail addresses through YouTube, Chief Anwar said.

After establishing the Internet connection with the militant, the men planned their journey to Pakistan and into the tough terrain of North Waziristan, where they intended to train around the border town of Miram Shah, a headquarters of the Afghan Taliban fighting against the American and NATO forces in Afghanistan, the police said.

The men were carrying laptops and maps of Miram Shah, as well as Kohat and Hangu, two major towns in the North-West Frontier Province that serve as the gateway to the tribal areas and North Waziristan, the police said.”

“No Deportation Order for Americans Detained in Pakistan, Official Says”
Friday, December 11, 2009

SNIPPET: “There is no deportation order for five young American Muslims detained in Pakistan over alleged terrorist links, the country’s interior minister said Friday.”

SNIPPET: “A senior State Department official said Friday the U.S. expects Pakistan to deport the men after they allegedly sought to join up with terrorist groups and left behind a video saying fellow Muslims must be defended.”

SNIPPET: “The State Department official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the unfolding case.

The official confirmed that U.S. diplomats in Pakistan visited the detainees on Friday for a second time. Diplomatic security and FBI agents visited the men on Thursday. There was no immediate indication when the five might be returned to the United States.”

SNIPPET: “A local police chief in Pakistan also said Friday the five will most likely be deported.

Pakistan authorities say the men used the social networking site Facebook and the Internet video site YouTube to try to connect with extremist groups in Pakistan. When they arrived in Pakistan, they allegedly took that effort to the street.”

N.C. Jihad Plot Connection?”

PHOTO CAPTION: “Daniel Patrick Boyd, aka “saifullah””

SNIPPET: “Boyd has been indicted for trying to help several Muslims in North Carolina, including his own son, travel to Pakistan for jihad. Note that Ziyad Yaghi, one of the young men involved in the plot, was involved with the NC State MSA — just like Zamzam above.

But Boyd has been in jail since July. So either this is a different Saifullah (not so uncommon a name) or the plan has been in the works for some time.

Also, take a closer look at the image of Ahmed Abdullah Minni. He looks familiar. A lot like a kid I once saw in a pretty lame rap video praising the mujahideen. But I can’t seem to find the video. If you know what I’m talking about, email me.”

SNIPPET: “Along the way one of them made a friend on YouTube who provided a degree of guidance as they cobbled together a scheme to travel to Pakistan for training and ultimately combat. The YouTube relationship moved to a shared Yahoo email account and messages in the Drafts folder, the latter being a tried and true method for evading detection that actually worked in this case. That one of the guys had family in Pakistan helped, if only by providing them with a bit of reassurance - they would not be entirely strangers in a strange land.”

Abstract
Homegrown Sunni extremists (jihadis) and Latin American street gang members (cholos) represent potential threats to national security. Both groups are known to inhabit the video- sharing website YouTube. Videos representative of each group were selected at random, and the visual motifs in the videos were categorized. Findings suggest similarities and differences between the two groups that may have significance for how practitioners address each threat, and for determining the likelihood that the two groups may begin to work in concert. The portraits that emerge of jihadis and cholos may assist in developing strategies to counter the violence perpetrated by each.

Abstract

Large amounts of jihadi video content on YouTube along with the vast array of relational data that can be gathered opens up innovative avenues for exploration of the support base for political violence. This exploratory study analyses the online supporters of jihad-promoting video content on YouTube, focusing on those posting and commenting upon martyr-promoting material from Iraq. Findings suggest that a majority are under 35 years of age and resident outside the region of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) with the largest percentage of supporters located in the United States. Evidence to support the potential for online radicalisation is presented. Findings relating to newly formed virtual relationships involving a YouTube user with no apparent prior links to jihadists are discussed.

“ICNA’s Search for Radicalism Should Start Within”

IPT News
December 15, 2009

SNIPPET: “The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), which touts itself as a leading grassroots Muslim organization, stood with American law enforcement last week in condemning violence and distancing itself from the actions of five of its young, American mosque attendees. These would-be terrorists traveled to Pakistan, intent on killing American soldiers whom they saw as waging a war on Islam.

Leaders at the Alexandria-based ICNA mosque expressed shock at the men’s decision to give up bright futures for jihad. “The teachings of this mosque are the Koran, moderation, tolerance and peaceful interaction with our neighbors and other faiths,’ said Essan Talawi, a guest imam at the mosque where the five men attended and were active members of its youth group.”
