McDonald's Corp. will start offering breakfast for a buck with the launch of a national dollar menu in January.

The breakfast dollar menu will be backed with advertising across the U.S., and will feature five items: two sausage sandwiches, a sausage burrito, a 12-ounce coffee and a hash brown. The menu may feature some variations based on markets.

In another addition to McDonald's value offerings, the chain will start selling its Mac Snack Wrap, a wrap version of its popular Big Mac sandwich, later this month for a suggested price of $1.49.

Local franchisees are already pitching a fit and I’ve read some have file suit over the dollar menu. They say they’re losing money. I don’t doubt it. This thing is only designed to bring folks through the door in hopes they’ll spend more.

All the McDonald's in my area are filthy. The last one I bought food at (didn't eat it), it was about 3 pm on a Sunday afternoon. We were the only four people inside, and there wasn't one clean table. The fryer guy hadn't washed his shirt in at least four shifts. They had a "Free Cappuccino" poster up, but told me they hadn't "had time" to clean the machine, so it wasn't available. On the french fries, instead of making them fresh, they used the ones in the bin that were about an hour old. There weren't enough fries to make an order, so he started scraping behind the warming tray to get the ones that had fallen out.

A good McDonalds has great coffee, fries, and passable other food. Unfortunately, all the local McDonalds are owned by the same outfit, and ALL of them are filthy. They opened a new one last summer, and I walked into it about a week after it opened. It was already filthy. I don't know how you get two years of grease into a restaurant in a week, but they did it.

I’ve owned MCD now for a couple of years. Not much movement up or down. I do not understand why they would serve this much food for one buck. If I lived near a MCDs I would never cook breakfast.

Well said.

Like a modern American grocery store, what McDonalds is able to accomplish is nothing less than a modern miracle.

And it is so unhip to actually enjoy McDonalds.

It doesn’t work for everything, but a rule of thumb is to move the decimal over one place from 1968 to 2009 for prices on commodity items. Coffee was a dime then (a nickel when used to induce people into coming in and buying other stuff.) It was also when cups of coffee were about a third the size they are now.

I REVEL in being “unhip”.

Being “hip” means being worldly.

There are several admonishments about this... just a few here:

James 4:4
Do you not know that being the world’s friend is being God’s enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world takes his stand as an enemy of God.

1 John 2:16
For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

John 15:19
“If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but (A)I chose you out of the world, (B)because of this the world hates you.

Problem with most Fastfood is the calorie count. But if you eat it in moderation its ok.

The largest association of Burger King franchisees are suing the company over the one dollar double cheeseburger. The franchisees claim they are losing too much on it. The Burger King company says it is supposed to be a loss leader. However, the association claims the customers are not buying enough to make up the difference.

Coffee, other beverages and potato products are their profit items. Some burgers and special menu items are often sold at or near cost. There’s a good reason order-takers are trained to say “You want fries with that?”

I believe that’s the listing of the new dollar menu.

In other words, you don’t get all that for a buck. You can get any of those items for a buck each.

Breakfast: $1 at McDonalds.
Lunch: $1 at Burger King (Whopper Jr).
Dinner: $1 with careful shopping at WalMart.

Upshot: anyone can get by with decent meals by recycling 60 soda cans per day ($0.05 each) or working 25 minutes at minimum wage. Few indeed cannot earn $3/day in this country.
Methinks the “hunger problem” has been solved.

If you purchased each food item listed...it would cost you $5.00 (still a bargain though!).

In our area, they have 2 Egg McMuffins for $3.00. On Saturday mornings (on way to sports) we bring our own beverages; and buy 2 sets. For $6.00 I couldn’t make that at home.

Just kidding!

However our local MD has had a regular "special" of two hashbrowns for $1 for quite a while.

I think the breakfast fare is about the only edible stuff on the menu, except maybe for the fries. They should serve it all day.

True, a drink at McDonald’s costs a nickel to make, the cup actually costs more than the drink, but if they charged .15 for a drink, they couldn’t charge a buck for a meal that costs .90.

They're dealing in volume I guess. The dollar menu items went through the roof at the height of the recession. Those items don't make money, but they get those big butts through the door!

I bet they do well during the shopping season too. People are out and want a quick bite. Their stock seems to be relatively flat lately, though.
