David Queller and Joan Strassmann, evolutionary biologists at Rice University, recently proposed a new way to describe what makes an organism a unified whole. They defined an organism as an entity made up of parts that cooperate well for an overall purpose, and do so with minimal conflict. But how do parts like these get together, and where does purposeful behavior come from?...

Debate on church doctrine and or threads on specific religious matters may be best posted in the religion forum, but the defense of religious freedom, especially against those who wish to deprive us of same belongs front and center on FR....They banned God and prayer and creationism from public schools and public places, but Ill be damned if theyre gonna ban Him or it from FR!

Ping!
Brian Thomas MS* is startlingly dense, isn’t he?
More false conclusions made by the usual suspects.
Far too many inorganic entities and processes exhibit ‘purpose’...
Dust and gas coming together to form suns and planets, magnets sticking together..
Are they “organisms” ???
It’s an animal instinct..like eating. Some people eat to stay alive, some live to eat. The later get fat and die early. That will be $35.00 plus Obama tax which comes to about $20,000. You are welcome.
He’s one of the most thoughtful popular science writers out there IMHO. The evos hate him because he demonstrates that creation science is far superior to purposeless evolution in a way the average person can understand.
Two better questions:
1 What defines an Obamanism?
which naturally leads to:
2 What defines an Obamasm?
At first glance I thought it said Orgasm..........
My coffee cup exhibits no self-purpose, I have a purpose for it. It has A purpose assigned by me. It was assembled by a Creator, same as the suns and planets you refer to. They have no self-purpose, but their Creator had a purpose for them.
What is your purpose camel? Why do you deny your Creator? He loves you and wishes you to come to know him.
LMAO!
C’mon now, this was article was posted by ICR, not Darwin Central!
.
Wow, you almost sound like you are capable of having a genuine conversation. Almost.
All your bravado aside, you know it’s true. But you can’t bring yourself to face the truth, thus the bravado.
Dusts and gases eat things..wow...who knew?
That you still hold that opinion after the number of times Brian has been shown to be ignorant, deceitful, and/or just plain wrong speaks volumes about your standards for science writing. I for one don't hate him, I admire his ability as a propagandist and envy him his job. Maybe I'm just not average enough to fully appreciate him--maybe I just need to know less.
Oh ho ho! You’re killing me.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that initially misread the title... ;)
For once, I thought Mr. Thomas might have an interesting article on his hands.
I thought the same thing. An orgasm does require purpose!
Misread your title.....Thought it read “What Defines an Orgasm”
Get thee back to DU. Truly that is the level of their discourse there.
So what...it is still crap
That statement has greater depth than anything else I have ever read on a crevo thread. A tip of the hat to you.
Yes it does...to stay alive...
On a more serious note...dust does not require consumption.
Weakest strawman argument of the year award...
Epic fail.
Inanimate objects have no self purpose, do they?
Sounds like “One purpose for all” is being derived from the same source of “One size fits all”...how monolithic and unimaginative. Of course, that is the purpose.

Silly me. I always thought the way to determine whether or not something was an 'organism' was anything with the ability to reproduce.
What does Cyanobacteria “eat”?
and gas in a large enough quantity (like the sun) consumes itself.
Next...
Nobody asked you what your diet is the question is what are you?...next?
...well gases do not necessarily consume themselves. A volume of gas will exchange energetic states until the inherent steric hindrances are eliminated through uniformity of conformation - losing heat as they do so - until they are rendered inert. (Couldn’t resist - the spaghetti monster made me do it)
Genetic replication
Are you the reason for the “Hire the handicapped.. they’re fun to watch” posters?
My standards are obviously far above yours, otherwise I would be posting about how nature selects from random processes to create complex, specified, super-sophisticated digital DNA codes, while I ignored the fact that the only empirically verified source for complex, specified, digital codes are intelligent designers.
Inherent..it’s kind of like sterile or maybe engaging in alternatives on a cosmic scale.
This belongs in religion. It has nothing to do with defense of religious freedom.
Really. What if an organism for whatever reason can’t reproduce? Are you saying that it is no longer an organism?
“...but Man was too late.”
Magnets reproduce just by being near or sometimes rubbing each other... like teenagers.
Yep, you can’t answer the question so you insult. ...I think your purpose is to be the bateria in the punch bowl.
What is Your purpose camel?
I answered your question, you posted a smart@$$ remark, and I returned the favor.
Now get a life.
As Gould commented, if the the evolutionary clock could be set back and rerun everything in the world would look different since there is no direction or purpose to existence.
For that reason the Darwinist philosophy is also nihilistic, no reason for being here beyond happenstance, no reason for continued existence beyond self survival and then nonexistence.
Darwinism is also a materialistic philosophy in that cannot contemplate existence except for the sake of existence and any ideas beyond that are just part of the necessity of existence.
So I think if Darwinists start using words like purpose they'll be quick to explain no intelligence is implied.
Oh,organism...
Splintering and gathering is not reproducing or consuming, it's sucking and sticking.
