...well gases do not necessarily consume themselves. A volume of gas will exchange energetic states until the inherent steric hindrances are eliminated through uniformity of conformation - losing heat as they do so - until they are rendered inert. (Couldn’t resist - the spaghetti monster made me do it)

Inherent..it’s kind of like sterile or maybe engaging in alternatives on a cosmic scale.
