Women forbidden by law from feeling sunlighthey, thats a positive message for young girls
The other day, George Jonas passed on to his readers a characteristically shrewd observation gleaned from the late poet George Faludy: No one likes to think of himself as a coward, wrote Jonas. People prefer to think they end up yielding to what the terrorists demand, not because its safer or more convenient, but because its the right thing . . . Successful terrorism persuades the terrorized that if they do terrors bidding, its not because theyre terrified but because theyre socially concerned.

Does the Burka Barbie include weapons with which to flog her if her sleeve rolls up too high or to honor kill her if her smiles at Ken?

I looked up “Burka Barbie”, and it turns out, the dolls are part of a 500-doll collection made by an Italian artist. It doesn’t sound like the doll is being mass-marketed by Mattel. They’re part of one artist’s collection being sold to raise money for a charity.
The other dolls in the collection appear to be dressed differently. At least one is scantily-clad. Here’s more info and a photo:
http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Global-News/2009/1122/burka-barbie-to-raise-funds-for-save-the-children
Still, Steyn makes a good point: Other writers are hailing the Burka Barbies in this collection as wonderful. Why would it be wonderful to celebrate the subjugation of women?
I’m the owner of a collection of dolls made 35-40 years ago, and each doll is dressed to represent a different country - the United States, Italy, Spain, England, Holland, Germany, China, and so on. It’s a beautiful collection. But, I can’t imagine wanting to own one that includes a doll in a full burka with a slit for the eyes, as if to celebrate life under the Taliban. The doll in my collection representing Germany isn’t dressed to celebrate life under the Nazi regime.

Is Mattel donating 100% of sales to charities that help oppressed women?
They should.

Certainly, theres no danger of Barack Obama ever standing up for the likes of poor Miss Almaleki to a roomful of A-list imams. When it comes to real hate crimes, as opposed to his entirely imaginary epidemic, the president of the United States has smaller cojones than Ken.Oh man that hurts!

Yep, the line you put in red was what I expected to be among the first Steynisms people mentioned from that column. But sadly it probably does not hurt for a lefty, they pride themselves in being as Limbaugh calls them, the new castrati.

Pinging the Steyn list.
Money quote - ""That “Drop Fees” campaign would never dream of dressing up its poster gal as June Cleaver, Donna Reed or any other outmoded sitcom mom in twin-set and pearls. Golly, that would send all sorts of disturbing signals to today’s liberated females, wouldn’t it? What signal is Barbie’s burka sending? That, in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, women were forbidden by law from ever feeling sunlight on their faces? Hey, there’s a positive message for young girls."

Steyn also has a small piece on the Tiger Woods "issue" here -

Why would it be wonderful to celebrate the subjugation of women?Ironically, I jokingly told a store clerk yesterday that I was going to chain a Barbie to the top of my Christmas tree. I hate Barbie with a passion. Researchers once generated a computer model of a woman with Barbie's proportions. They found that her back would be too weak to support the weight of her upper body, and her body would be too narrow to contain more than half a liver and a few centimeters of bowel. A real woman built that way would walk on all fours, suffer from chronic diarrhea and eventually die from malnutrition. I say ban ALL Barbies!

You think? Outside Islam, Snuggies are the current stage of getting us into burkas. Pretty soon they'll be adding hoods and face masks.
