Tata Nano Hybrid and Hot Rod Coming to Market
The New York Times ^ | December 9, 2009, 4:15 pm | NICK KURCZEWSKI

The world’s cheapest car is about to get greener and sportier.

A hybrid version of the tiny Tata Nano has been confirmed by Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors, according to South Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper.

The current gasoline-powered Nano — on sale in India since April — is hardly a gas guzzler. Powered by a tiny, 35-horsepower 2-cylinder gas engine, the Nano is capable of approximately 50 miles per gallon. A greener variant of this engine (or the larger 3-cylinder motor planned for export markets) could make the Nano the world’s cheapest hybrid.

Accelerating from 0-60 miles an hour takes approximately 30 seconds — making the Nano 15 seconds slower than the Smart Fortwo, presently the slowest accelerating car sold in the United States

Well isn't that exciting?!?!?!

0-60 in 30 seconds. And that’s the “hot rod” version.

I can already see the leftists in their new “hot rods”. Pulling onto the interstate, barely at half the speed limit. Refusing to yield as the enter causing a ripple of traffic congestion behind them. Then cutting people off as they cut across multiple lanes of traffic so they can park themselves in the passing lane - by now doing 3/4 of the speed limit.

We are moving backward. My 1977 VW Rabbit diesel got 50+ on the highway, had room for 4 adults and luggage with comfort and would cruise at 80. You could get in and out with ease and while the ride was firm (not brutal), it handled well. It was a wonderful car.

“Powered by a tiny, 35-horsepower 2-cylinder gas engine, the Nano is capable of approximately 50 miles per gallon.”

Big deal. The 1992 Honda Civic VX hatchback got 54 mpg and had a 110hp engine. Pretty good umph for a sub-compact.

Everyone’s laughing at this little vehicle, but let a few million get on the road in India with their growing middle class a few years down the road and the resulting increased demand for oil/fuel spiking, gasoline over here is liable to be several dollars a gallon more. Some laughing now may find themselves having to buy one to afford to drive from point A to point B. Just a thought.

Actually, in terms of creating a process that reduces cost while building a car that is cheap to buy ($2,500) and run it's a fantastic piece of industrial engineering. It's not high-tech, but functional -- frugal engineering they call it and Nissan, Volkswagen, etc. are all rushing to copy it.
