HOUSTON – The first openly gay person to be elected mayor of Houston says she hopes her victory in Saturday's election will change how the world views the city.

Houston is the nation's fourth-largest city and the biggest to elect an openly gay mayor.

Mayor-elect Annise Parker spoke Sunday at a press conference after defeating former city attorney Gene Locke with 53.6 percent of the vote in the hotly contested runoff election.

One liberal defeats another liberal. Big friggin' deal, and Houston hasn't elected a conservative in about 50 years. One of the most PC cities in the US when it comes to housing and race, btw.

If you live in Texas, stay out of the cities.

Sorry, but NYC beats Houston in terms of property values by a huge margin. Housing is so cheap in Houston that it is no surprise that such ghetto people live in “middle class” neighborhoods.

Is this the same kind of cultural diversity that killed all those people at Fort Hood?

Oh, yeah, lots of homosexuals open fire on groups of soldiers on military bases. Meanwhile, Islam is just an innocent, little ol' religion of peace /s.

Just relax. Heteronormative fundamentalism brooks no lesbians in public office. :-)

Well, they’re Texan Democrats, which is sort of like Republicans everywhere else, I presume. :-)

Well, I dunno about “Christian Conservative,” but if I lived in Houston, judging by some of the comments on Locke, I would have voted for her too.

Oh, please. I doubt that Texan schools are teaching teenage boys how to “fist” each other, and while Hutchison and Cornyn aren’t exactly outstanding, they’re a far sight better than Jean Cherie and the Late Swimmah.

“If you live in Texas, stay out of the cities.”

If it were not for the MSA’s of Houston, DFW, Austin and San Antonio, the Texas economy would simply be a very large Alabama.

I did not say that property values were higher in NYC than they are in Houston, but simply that since we entered this economic Depression two years ago, Houston property values have increased while they have decreased in the other large cities.

True. Houston has no zoning laws, however, so that keeps appreciation moderate during housing bubbles (the 1980s Danny Faulkner-era in Houston and Dallas bubble nothwithstanding) . Low unemployment, conversely, keeps demand relatively high, and housing is affordable to folks who would rent otherwise. This is why you don't see the boom and bust in real estate in Houston that you see in Florida and Nevada.

Austin is actually one of the nicest cities in the United States. Great climate (especially for Texas) lots of young people (and jobs). A damn shame it also has UT, which attracts the lefties. I can take or leave Dallas, but Fort Worth seemed like a nice place when I visited six years ago. Of course, evil is alive in well in Arlington.

It's all coming from the same place...The mass murderer down in Fort Hood did everything but stand at the main gate with a sign, saying, "Death to all American infidels"...He told his female Captain, "To burn in hell" because she too was an infidel....

Nobody said a word...During wartime...Ya think this is normal?

Or ya think everyone has swallowed the cultural diversity, political correct pudding?

Ya got kinky homosexual teachers and political leaders, and everyone thinks it's just peachy, not a problem....It's just and alternative life style right?....Don't say a word, or you'll be labeled a homophobe or worse.

Blap!

I live in Austin and considering that the place is run by a bunch of envio-Liberal Dems, the city operates rather effectively.

The weather is usually good, and the city can be a lot of fun.

And now, in Austin you can hardly tell the country is in a Depression.
