The first flare-up in the general election U.S. Senate race happened just hours into the six-week contest as Republican Scott Brown challenged Democrat Martha Coakley to sign a no-tax pledge and she promptly slapped down the move as a gimmick.
I dont get involved with campaign gimmicks, Coakley said. Im just not going to respond to that.
Brown, a Wrentham state senator, said of Coakleys dismissal: I find that disturbing, adding, I think Im more in line with what people are feeling - the burdens of family issues.

With the unusual turnout patterns of a special election, this is not as hopeless as it normally is.
I am surprised Coakley did not literally trip over herself....
any eal chance? this would be an especially sweet way to put a cork in obama’s socialist whine...
Just remind your sister that Republicans vote on January 19th and Democrats on January 20th.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Fat chance - she’s a public school teacher, and she’s already recieved her marching orders!
Tell her you heard Coakley has a framed, personalized autographed picture of Jesse Helms.
My mother can't believe what's happened to my sister; she used to be Republican.
Ah, so then she will be voting for Palin in ‘12.
Next get her on amnesty for illegal aliens and funding abortions at the federal level.
Next get her on amnesty for illegal aliens and funding abortions at the federal level.
Palin Against Obama - I would say yes. She says she hates him.
Palin Against Hillary - No. She’d vote Hillary.
I don’t understand the GOP. This Democrat woman Coakley is braindead. I know that most of the voters in MA are also braindead Democrats, but I believe this year is different and large numbers of rank and file Democrats are not thrilled with socialist/communist Barack Obama. They, combined with Independents, Conservatives and the weak willed GOP could win this seat for Mr. Brown. Michael Steele should plant his butt up in MA and get with the program. Winning Ted Kennedy’s senate seat would have an immediate negative effect on Obama, his socialist cronies and Democrats across the board!!!
REPUBLICANS don’t think like you do JFOX. You are talking about grassroots populist political organizing. If any REPUBLICANS get involved in this race, it will be to monitor the developments. Please get with the program.
Yeah, does Mrs. Potato Head really want to go there ? A “Kennedy” will take votes away from her...
Hopefully!!!
She hates Obama but plans to send him a new loyal Senator? Ugh.
It figures she’s a public school teacher with that kind of critical thinking. ;-D
Family, what can you do.
Exactly - what can you do. The public sector job environment has done most the damage toher thinking skills IMO.
Last year when there was a Prop 2 1/2 (property tax increase) where she lives, guess who the first person to bitch was?.................Yep, her.
My Mom: “But I thought Deval was going to lower your property taxes?”
I nailed her with: “Socialism is great until they want YOUR money, right?!”
Her blood pressure went through the roof. YES!!! :)
Mayor Michael Sullivan/Lawrence, MA
http://www.bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20091218lawrence_mayor_eyes_big_cashout/
I love this part: “Degnan contends payouts to Sullivan and Thomas Schiavone, the citys outgoing economic development director, wouldnt leave money to pay the salary of the new mayor.”
The question I have here is a basic one, IS Sullivan rightly entitled to the money ? If he is, the guy must be paid. Would you forfeit all that to the city and to the incoming double-dipping Lantigua ? Sullivan might actually, gasp, need that money to live on. Other than that, if this is all legal and how it’s done, I don’t see what the issue is here, it’s part of his package and benefits as an elected official.
What’s your take ?
They have to buy out the sick time and vacation time. That’s the law. I know teachers and police officers who have scored HUGE dollars when they retired because they banked all their sick time and vacation time. My sister’s banking hers, I know that for a fact.
And they get nearly free healthcare for life too! YAY!!!
Sounds like Sullivan is playing by the rules. Does he still have popularity in Lawrence? If so, he could perhaps run for another office someday, like next year.
So in other words, he’s merely exercising his right to claim benefits he’s entitled to under the law (a non-story). If Lantigua has a problem with this, then he should change the law, that is if he can get BOTH of his hands out of two different taxpayer pockets while feigning such moral outrage (”That Republican honky is taking muh mon-nay !”).
Exactly!
