WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has written a personal letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Il as part of an intense effort to draw the reclusive nation back to nuclear disarmament talks, a senior State Department official said Tuesday.

The letter was delivered to North Korean officials last week by Obama's special envoy for North Korea, Stephen Bosworth, during a visit to Pyongyang aimed at restarting the stalled negotiations, the official said.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the diplomacy, would not describe the contents of the letter but said they fit with Bosworth's general message.

Dear Kim Jong Il,
It’s me, your buddy Barack, I think your sexy. Keep up the great work. You are my inspiration. Everyday I wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and I say “I want to be just like my idol Kim Jong Il.” Keep up the great work
From Barack Obama

Ya know, I was doing this to be funny but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is what he said

“Dear Kim, be nice to me, I need help because I am now at a 43% approval rating, If you play nice I will send you 500 cases of Hennessey Cognac, your favorite!”

“I hate my own country, work with me to destroy American values and its economy.”

That'll show 'em. I am sure Kim Bad Hair will come right along and dump all his nukes now that BO has written him a letter. I wonder if he signed it XXOOXX? Included some tapes of his speeches with the letter? How amateur and incompetent and ineffective can you get?

Back here on Earth, the only thing that has ever changed NK behavior is freezing access to their cash and assets. Time to do that again. A letter? Poof.

Has Senator Obama written a conciliatory letter to Pepe Lobo, the President-elect of democratic, free HONDURAS in our own frikkin hemisphere, under attack from tyrants like Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and Danny Ortega?

(crickets.....)

Now, I'm all for bombing the crap out of NK; but, I am curious to see the results of a personal letter. If nothing else it is amusing to see an ineffective loser like BO grab his ankles for a pathetic despot..... amusing.

I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions about this. Nothing is what it seems in the world of intelligence/”diplomacy”. The Obama Adminsitration could have any number of reasons for wanting to get Bosworth and a couple of, ahem, “aides” into Pyongyang for a brief visit right around now. A personal letter from POTUS is on the short list of plausible excuses for doing that. And it could well be part of a cooperative effort with other governments that are eager to implement a controlled take-down of the Dear Leader regime.

Pathetic. Now is the time to strike... not send notes. If played properly we could back a revolt. They would not end up with a democracy, but anything is better than what they have now.

Who knows if he is or isn’t on this particular front. Frankly I think he knows full well he’s in over his head on this sort of thing, and will pretty much do what more experienced people advise him to do. I can’t say as I’ve seen any real change in our NK policy from the the Bush administration. The Dear Leader situation is a tough one, because China is not willing to allow an uncontrolled takedown, and we’re in no position to seriously piss off China right now. Obama’s not bombing the regime off the map for the same reason Bush didn’t.

The reality is that Obama is not writing any letters to Dear Leader without the approval and supervision of the CIA (the *real* CIA, not the fly-by-night political appointees), nor is he making public the information that a letter was sent to Dear Leader unless the CIA felt this was advisable. Whether the letter idea was initiated within the Administration and/or CIA, or whether it’s something done in response to a request from some other country (like China), we’re never likely to know.

If he sent a letter saying “go eat crap”, well, that’d be something. But I doubt he did.

This sure seems different to me. I don’t remember any announcements that President Bush was reaching out to Kim in personal correspondence.

I didn’t realize Obama takes his orders from the CIA. If true, I think that would also be different.

Dear Kim;
Merry Christmas or Happy New Year if you prefer. Just a note to let you know that if you should happen to test one of your new missiles that you developed in response to American aggression and imperialism, and it should veer off course and happen to hit a place called Wasilla, Alaska, that we would understand that it was just a mistake. It might help if you could say that you were firing it to combat global warming. Of course that wouldn’t be true, but the only person who might have the gumption to call you out wouldn’t be around to do it.

Hope to see you at the next International Marxist Convention. Not sure, should I bow or just shake hands?
Your friend,
Bari
