Police shoot U.S. student's laptop upon entry to Israel [Mac not bulletproof]
Haaretz ^ | 14 Dec 2009 | Bar Ben Ari and Or Hirshauga, TheMarker Correspondents

Israel Border Police officers shot at an American student's laptop as she entered Israel via Taba, Egypt, two weeks ago.

Lily Sussman, 21, wrote on her blog that border police subjected her to two hours of questioning and searches prior to shooting her Apple Macbook three times.

"They had pressed every sock and scarf with a security device, ripped open soap and had me strip extra layers. They asked me tons of questions? where are you going?" Sussman wrote, describing the experience.

There are definitely holes in the student’s alibi.

Kevlar is too heavy??? Too hot... and they haven't figured out how to use it as a battery or as a storage device or as a display device yet...

On the other hand, they were very polite about it... and they will apparently be re-imbursing her for the loss of her laptop... in about a month.

Right it sounds like her luggage indicated something and they wanted to be sure she was not bringing something in that laptop. That she is being reembursed says to me that this was all on the up and up even if they ultimately were wrong in their suspicions about her.

Thanks for all the interest, humor and advice regarding my laptop craziness.

First, I completely agree with Freitas’s comment. “These guys shoot every day at unarmed people, even children. Why so much surprise about a simple laptop?”

When I was in college (many, many moons ago...about 35 years ago to be exact) I took a trip to the Holy Land. We landed in Jordan and then after a few days went to Israel. The security was unbelievable as we passed the border. They took things apart (i.e. hair dryers, cassette recorders, etc.) and handed them back to you in pieces. It was all part of security measures at the time. Shooting the laptop seems a little extreme though.

And who is taking up for this Pali supporter? For the love of heaven, these young people who have recently been working to get Obama elected, going to a University or both have been programmed to hate Israel.

Many stated if there is more to this story, You can safely bet there is a lot more to this story.

Remember some have a martyr mentality and will do anything to provoke the Israeli police or border guard to make them look bad.

Just a wild guess...

But, I suspect that she was on a list of people who had published something on the Internet that was considered anti-Israeli.

The post she had stating

First, I completely agree with Freitas’s comment. “These guys shoot every day at unarmed people, even children. Why so much surprise about a simple laptop?”

indicates that she considers the Israeli government to be a terrorist organization.

I think she’s a spoiled Israel hating white American brat. She was probably baiting security just so she could scream about her human rights. I’ll bet security got an ear and belly full of her crap before they took it out on her computer.

She does not seemed too traumatized by the event on the interview. Apparently she has Jewish relatives but it is not observant or knowledgeable about Judaism.

From the size of the holes, it looks like they shot it with a .50. Most body armor isn’t much use against one of those.

Did they take it out back or just shoot it on a table?

Imagine the paperwork the shooter is in for.
