Woods voted top athlete of the decade

Tiger Woods has been voted Athlete of the Decade by members of The Associated Press, his 10 years of incomparable golf outweighing nearly three weeks of a salacious sex scandal.

Just like so many of his 64 victories worldwide and 12 majors dating to 2000, it wasn't much of a contest.

Woods received 56 of the 142 votes cast by AP member editors. More than half of the ballots were returned after his Nov. 27 car accident which set off the sensational tales of infidelity that have tarnished Woods' image.

Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor who won the Tour de France six times this decade, finished second with 33 votes, followed by tennis Grand Slam champion Roger Federer with 25 votes.

Woods had more PGA Tour titles in one decade than all but four of golf's greatest players won in their careers.

He certainly gets a lot of holes-in-one.

He’s black oh wait half-breed like hussein

Actually - not.

Even Tiger doesn't consider himself 'black.'

Indeed, he's only 1/4 black - and more Eurasian, and white and Native American. So why does everyone insist he's black.

"At the same time, it is a good activity that at least gets you out of the house."

It's great for your flexibility. My knees, back, shoulders, elbows, and wrists always feel better during golfing "season". Both of my knees are completely blown after 50 years of playing catcher in baseball and softball, so the walking, bending, and turning keeps them as flexible as possible.

But I don't consider myself an athlete because I golf by any stretch of the imagination. I get more actual exercise by square-dancing.

The decade started in 2001 and will end in 2010.

That's a year from now.

Any sport is kind of silly when you think about it. Hitting a ball with a club to get it in a little gopher-sized hole sounds like a waste of time. So does throwing a large ball into a basket, or hitting a ball with a club.

Also, do you American League fans who disparage golf consider the DH to be an athlete? All he does is swing a bat.

No, top cheater of the decade.

Tiger is not a tiger anymore, he has mutated into a cheetah.

And in today's Nobel-Prize-Given-To-Absolutely-Anyone-World, I am surprised that Lenny from the Hotel front desk didn't get this prize.

You look at a pig like John Daly or a runt like Corey Pavin, and it’s quite arguable that golfers are not athletes.

Ridiculous. Golf is a sport but it isn’t athletic.

The world’s best athlete the last decade is probably Lance Armstrong who puts out more energy in one Tour than Tiger has expended in a lifetime of golfing. Besides, Lance wouldn’t even be in the conversation if he lost most of the time and didn’t even pull a 2nd or 3rd place. But that is THE STORY of Tiger’s career. More losses than wins.

Also, there’s no “9th hole” in atheletic competition.

I’d pick a decathlete, a distance runner, a boxer, or a tri-athlete if I didn’t go with Armstrong.

Typical media reaction, though, you go for name recognition rather than substance.

If it’s an activity during which you can smoke and drink, does that qualify as a sport? Some people consider sex a sport, after all.

I have a feeling that his credit cards are larger and more, um, stimulating than any part of his anatomy.

I know, it’s ridiculous. Golf is a fine game. But golfers as athletes? Compare a golfer to, say, Ray Lewis. In terms of strength, speed, endurance, agility...it’s not even close. And I’m not saying Ray Lewis is athlete of the decade. I just picked him at random. Comparing Tiger Woods’ athleticism to Ray Lewis is absurd. Funny that the top 3 in their vote was a golfer, a cyclist, and a tennis player. I think I would look elsewhere for a great athlete. Probably to football, or maybe an olympian or something.

Tiger Woods was on his way to Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia to play golf. He took the opportunity to drive his new Lexus through the hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. While in Tennessee, he stopped to get gas at a little podunk service station in the middle of nowhere. There was an attendant with buck teeth and bib-overalls sitting on the bench outside of the station. The attendant knew absolutely nothing of golf and certainly didn't know who Tiger Woods was.

While Tiger was pumping the gas, a couple of golf tees fell from his pocket onto the ground.

Uhhh, say there, fella. You dropped somethin'," noticed the attendant.

"Oh, yea, thanks. Those are my tees," replied Tiger.

"Your what?" came the response.

"
TEES, " said Tiger.

"Well, what-er them fo'? "

"They're tees -- you know . . . They hold up my balls when I'm driving."

"Well, ga-a-a-awwww-lee-e-e-e," remarked the attendant,

"Them Lexus folks think of everything, don't they?"

Hey, he does do quite a bit of aerobic exercise.

Exactly! Anyone that can play 18 holes of golf and hold his own with the world's best, then still have the strength to service all those mistresses has got to at least be in good shape.......
