JOHANNESBURG – South Africa's former health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who gained notoriety for her dogged promotion of lemons, garlic and olive oil to treat AIDS, has died. She was 69.

The ruling African National Congress said Tshabalala-Msimang died in a Johannesburg hospital Wednesday from complications related to a 2007 liver transplant. Media outlets said she was possibly undergoing tests for a possible second transplant when she died.

Tshabalala-Msimang's disastrous HIV policies during her nine years in office made her the most unpopular government minister in post-apartheid South Africa. She was ridiculed locally and internationally and nicknamed "Dr. Beetroot" — another one of her suggested AIDS remedies — and "Dr. Garlic."

However, she was responsible for some advances. She improved basic services in rural areas, forced down the price of medicine, tried to stem the exodus of doctors and nurses to rich countries, and was one of the driving forces behind a global anti-tobacco treaty.

Tshabalala-Msimang's recommendation was to use nutritional remedies such as olive oil, the African potato, beetroot, garlic and lemon.

Coming soon to a socialist healthcare bill near you.

Well, I love garlic, one of the very best flavor enhancers. It's good for you too, but I sure never thought of it as a cure for disease. What a whack job.

"tried to stem the exodus of doctors and nurses to rich countries"

How exactly did she do that?

By confiscating their Passports?

South Africa is a crime ridden sinkhole since the ANC took over.

It is also, along with ZIMBABWE, a model for OBAMAMERICA!

Garlic and onions contain allicin which is an antibiotic. It does boost your immune system and has been used in history as a preventive and curative. However, it’s promotion as an AIDS cure is wacky.

AmericanPravda still spoke out in her defense:

“However, she was responsible for some advances. She improved basic services in rural areas, forced down the price of medicine, tried to stem the exodus of doctors and nurses to rich countries, and was one of the driving forces behind a global anti-tobacco treaty.”

Being of East European background, I can attest to garlic’s ability to boost your immune system. We eat it raw when we have a cold or flu. It works. But I doubt it would make any difference for someone with HIV.

There’s, no doubt, a very fortunate teenager in S. Africa right now due to the fact that Dr. Beetroot died before the teenager was killed for his or her healthy liver.

The real cure for AIDS has always been ground habanero peppers spread over the affected parts.

Dr. Habanero.

I just feel better the day after I get a major garlic hit, like after a dinner with my spaghetti sauce. Yum!

This woman is responsible for many thousands of early deaths. After living here for over 2 years it was clear to see that she was one of the most uneducated of persons to ever have held such a spot. Her beyond dumb decisions cost many their lives. South Africa is finally waking to this problem and the first thing they are now preaching is responsible living...a first.

nicknamed "Dr. Beetroot" — another one of her suggested AIDS remedies — and "Dr. Garlic."

AP - the most trusted name in news, right (along with Wikipedia)? Read the article and you'll find near the end:

Tshabalala-Msimang graduated from the First Leningrad Medical Institute and then went on to gain a Masters degree in Public Health from the University of Antwerp in Belgium. She worked at hospitals in Tanzania and Botswana and returned to South Africa as apartheid was crumbling in 1990.

Wikipedia acknowledges her medical training, but declines to refer to her as "Dr." except in mockery, while showing high regard for the LMI (now St. Petersburg State Medical Academy); also included the most un-flattering among many images of her that can be found with a Google images search. OTOH maybe Wiki regards her as just another super affirmative action, low IQ, knuckle draggin' darkie from SA.
