PHOENIX -- Maricopa County jails will play Christmas music and holiday hymns throughout the season, continuing an annual tradition despite multiple lawsuits filed to prevent it, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office has announced in a news release.
The music is played all day in all jails and includes songs and melodies from all countries and faiths in many languages, KPHO-TV in Phoenix reported.
In years past, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has personally chosen some of the songs and performers featured, including tunes from Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Bing Crosby and Doctor Demento.
"People everywhere deserve a little Christmas cheer," Arpaio explained in 2008. "Especially those incarcerated during the holiday season."
According to the news release, inmates have filed six lawsuits over Arpaio's policy, claiming cruel and unusual punishment and forced participation in religious celebrations. Four of those lawsuits have been dismissed, and the sheriff's office said it expects the courts to dismiss the remaining two.
About 8,000 people are incarcerated in Maricopa County Jails, the sheriff's office said.
They may have a point about Alvin & the Chipmunks.
If not President then at least he should go after McCain in the primaries.
That’s a fact!
Merry Christmas, Sheriff Joe......
LOL, a bunch of tattooed bad-asses sitting around listening to that all day.
Nice image, but probably hard on the poor small guy who does something remotely bothersome to them later.
It’s torture, I tell ya ... pure Torture!
TURN IT UP!!!
"HO,HO,HO"
Well if “Santa Baby” is part of the mix then I’m going along with the inmates on this one.
Word of advice to criminals. If you don’t like the prison environment imposed upon you, then don’t do whatever it is you did to be put in there. Simple, really it is.
Man oh man! The county lock up has 8000 inmates? That must be some complex.
Good work, Sheriff Joe.
Having worked in a retail store where the manager had hooked up his 8-track to play Brenda Lee Christmas carols from 8:00 am till 10:00 pm every day from Thanksgiving until Christmas, I agree that it could constitute cruel and unusual punishment.
If it’s Holly Jolly Christmas or Santa Baby, I’d have to take his side.
Oh,man. that’s worse than listening to Korean TV shows!
“They may have a point about Alvin & the Chipmunks.”
Chipmunks roasting on an open fire
Hot sauce dripping from their toes...
Bob Rivers - Twisted Christmas
Or one of his best, “Walking ‘Round In Women’s Underwear”
Liberals, America-haters, Hispano-Racists, and other assorted whiners have been going after Sheriff Joe for years....it is getting ridiculous.
If the inmates do not like the Christmas tunes....hey, stop committing crimes.
I am sick and tired of the Criminal Rights crowd and their pandering to thugs and criminals.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio is doing his job....and very effectively
