I’m not sure if it’s “over” or “ongoing”, but it sure looks like Iraq has just stepped up the rhetoric -

DEVELOPING: Iranians have been launching attacks in a disputed Iraqi oil area over the past few days, Iraq’s deputy minister said, Reuters reported.

It would have to be a Goat Summit.

They'll just end up fighting over that, too.

over the past few days

I'm just learning about this for the first time so I just caught the tail of another post saying that there have been several incursions.

Somebody's stirring the pot for some reason. Nothing distracts like a good old internecine turf war masquerading as a holy jihad...

With a war going on there would be all *sorts* of excuses to buy "defensive" arms from Russia, China, etc. etc. and set them up in Israel's Iraq's way.

I’m glad we have a strong leader in the White House who will stand up to middle eastern thugs, a man who has no reservations about crushing our enemies, a great American patriot who will fight... oh never mind.

Yeah, I wrote that before I saw that it was only 11 guys. If I was right, then it was an awfully tentative move. They probably could have rolled in in battalion strength with little response.

They could just be testing the local Iraqi commander’s decision loop. Or it could have just been 11 yahoos feeling frisky from their whiskey.

I don’t think this is a handful of Iranians acting on their own based upon what retuers is reporting now -

-looks like this is a concerted effort

Can any experts help us know what to believe here? Military people what is this on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being nuke em?
To me its jaw dropping but I say this in another reports saying no big deal ho hum. Which is it???
“”periodically, about every few months, the oil ministry guys from Iraq will go ... to fix something or do some maintenance. They’ll paint Iraqi colours and throw an flag up.

“They’ll hang out there for a while, until they get tired, and as soon as they go away, the Iranians come down the hill and paint it Iranian colours and raise an Iranian flag. It happened about months ago and probably happen again.””

Time to test those Iraqi Armed Forces we have been training. Will they fire on their Shiite bretheren?

‘Will Obama even give a crap?”
Yes I am sure he pooped his panties and drew a line in the sand around the perimeter of the well and put some new batteries in his promter, bowed and apologised. No sarcasm what so ever here.

VERY very interesting, I suppose we won't know precisely where this is actually leading for a few more days or even weeks.

“VERY very interesting, I suppose we won’t know precisely where this is actually leading for a few more days or even weeks.”

sounds to me like the situation is still fluid. 11 Iranian soldiers are still dug in, we (US mil official) have acknowledged the incursion and an Iraqi minister now tells us they (Iran) has been launching attacks on “disputed” oil wells the past several days . . . we hardly know what’s going on now - certainly don’t know where this is leading . . . very interesting indeed

I am surprised that this is the first that we have heard about any of the incursions that have being occurring over a period of days.

Do you think, like others have suggested, that the Iranis are playing 'Chicken' with us?

Is this well in that part of the border region that has been in question for years and years? I don’t recall the specifics, but there’s an area along the Iraq/Iran border that has been disputed, often with armed conflict.

Yes. You can finding articles quoting the US military spokesman in Iraq saying they aren't worried because it happens all the time in the area. They said it's one side painting something or putting up a flag, leaving, and then the other side coming in and doing the same thing. Must be a slow newsday for the media.

We've got troops RIGHT THERE. We've got more troops in Kuwait.

But we have no Commander-in-Chief.

Yeah looking around the internet, apparently it's an abandoned area that nobody really wants to fight over and is just used for posturing. It's not being guarded and it sounds like a dozen guys in a handful of trucks drove up and planted their flag.

“Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, held an emergency meeting of the national security council on Friday to discuss the situation.”

Probably to discuss how much money they would make from a bump in oil prices.

Iraq demands withdrawal of Iranian troops

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Iraqi government demanded the immediate withdrawal on Friday of Iranian troops who have taken control of a disputed oilfield in southern Iraq.

“Iraq demands the immediate withdrawal from well No. 4 and the Fakka oilfield, which belongs to Iraq. Iraq is looking for a peaceful and diplomatic settlement to this issue,” said government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh.
