Anti-gun WA lawmakers launch new assault on weapons; press doesn’t help
Seattle Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 17 December, 2009 | Dave Workman

As predicted earlier in this column, gun prohibitionists are using the murder of a Seattle police officer, and a couple of other slayings, to launch a new effort to ban the sale of semiautomatic firearms in Washington State, and require current owners to register their firearms.

I forecast this development in a Nov. 3 column that addressed the cowardly slaying of Seattle Officer.

Timothy Brenton on Halloween as he sat in his patrol car in the Central District with trainee Britt Sweeney, who was able to return fire.

The irony is that Brenton, as I wrote in a Nov. 10 follow-up, was not killed with a rifle that meets the so-called “assault weapon” criteria, except that it just happens to be a semi-auto. However, the Kel-Tec rifle allegedly used in the Brenton murder is a sporting rifle, with a black synthetic stock; an inexpensive alternative to the far more popular AR-15 type rifle owned by millions of Americans, and certain tens of thousands of law-abiding Washington hunters, competitors and recreational target shooters.

The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Adam Kline (D-37th District), said in a telephone interview Wednesday that “the characteristics of a weapon…make it more lethal.”

And what characteristics are these? If it has a hand guard, a pistol grip, a large magazine and maybe a folding stock, and if it is semiautomatic. Sen. Kline is concerned about the “lethality” of a firearm; design characteristics that would allow someone to fire rapidly into a crowd.

Just another excuse for incremental disarmament. The anti-freedom types used to say they only wanted handgun control, they would *never* go after rifles or shotguns. Now it turns out they are most interested in those rifles that are most useful to a militia...

I really don’t understand why anti gun people want to have murderous criminals killing people and not allow innocent people to defend themselves.

*** The anti-freedom types used to say they only wanted handgun control, they would *never* go after rifles or shotguns.***

I have a long memory of gun control claims.

1961. We don’t want to take your guns away, we only want to register handguns. Long guns will not be affected.

1964. We don’t want to take your guns away. We only want to register all of them!

1968. We don’t want to take your sporting guns away. We ONLY want to register them and ban ONLY the import of foreign Saturday night specials and five shot WWII military bolt action rifles!

1968 “Today we make America safe by taking the guns out of the hands of criminals!”...LBJ when he signed the 1968 gun control act into law.

1971. We don’t want to take your sporting guns away, we ONLY want to ban Saturday night specials.

1976. We don’t want to take your long guns away. We ONLY want to ban all handguns!

(From the original Handgun Control Inc group)....”We only want to control handguns. Long guns will not be affected.”

1981. The NRA is a rifle organization! They should give up their handguns! And they can keep their rifles!—Lee Grant on GMA the day after Reagan was shot.

1989. We don’t want to ban your hunting rifles and shotguns. We ONLY want to ban handguns AND Assault rifles and shotguns.

We ONLY want to ban assault rifles and shotguns AND all fifty cal. rifles and handguns!

Way back in 1971 the MSM was on an anti-handgun kick. they managed to get just about all TV shows to have anti-gun rants, from crime shows like McCloud to Heck Ramsey, to the various comedies.

Then they discovered the “Miller Decision’ from the SCOTUS and ran with it. Every program had “the Miller decision” segments. Handguns were bad, rifles were good! Even programs like Archie Bunker had their required “handgun bad-rifle good” scenes.

Now all guns, except those with dubious “sporting” characteristics, are bad, an even those are “bad guns” to some of the fainthearts.

We need to start bringing criminal complaints against the Authors of these Bills. They are a clear violation of US Code, Title 18, Sections 241/242.

Then there was some officious witch from the United Nations who declared that bolt-action rifles with telescopic sights are “medium range sniper weapons” and should be banned from civilian possession.

So just a word to all the Elmer Fudds out there who think they’ll never come for those fine rifles and shotguns, and who think it’s OK to ban handguns and `ugly black guns’.

Every do-nothing FReeper who sits out election campaigns ("they're all crooked" or whatever the excuse for doing nothing, contributing nothing) can share the blame for this garbage.

It bothers me that they would take guns away from those who are trying to protect themselves, including rape victims and those that want to keep their families safe.

Every citizen should get a concealed weapon permit, go to a range and practice and take a self defense training course and get one of these:
