In a three-sentence press release e-mailed to the Verona-Cedar Grove Times last week, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced a gun buyback program.
Today and tomorrow, residents who are in possession of illegal handguns can turn them in and receive up to $200 no questions asked.
It's the county's Gun Amnesty Buyback Program, held in high crime areas such as East Orange, Newark and Irvington. No such programs are being held in Verona or Cedar Grove, presumably because the crime rate is lower here and residents obtain their firearms the legal way, with permits.
The programs are typically held in churches or other safe havens. County officials will be on hand to issue cash to residents who hand over their illegal guns.
Such programs have gained enormous popularity over the years across the country. In some cities thousands of guns make their way off the streets within a day or two.
A good way to fight crime, one would think.
But are we sending the wrong message to criminals who want to earn a fast buck with the sale of illegal firearms?
In some jurisdictions, people are allowed to turn in up to three handguns for $200 each, according to news reports.
One must ask, are we as law-abiding citizens who obtain our weaponry through legal means at risk of having our homes, offices and businesses burglarized by criminals who intend to make a couple of hundred dollars at a gun buyback program?

I remember such a program in Hartford a efw years back. they offered up to $250 per gun, more than Wal-Mart charged for a small .22 rifle. some smart folks went to Wal-Mart, purchased a couple of said guns for $100, and then drove directly to the buy-back place, and turned them in for $250 apiece.
oops! make that $199 bucks apiece...
Are the weapons to be destroyed without even testing whether they have been used in crimes?
$250!

Legalized fencing, paid for by taxpayers.
I’ve got a broken pistol that I’m just wiating for a buyback program to get rid of it
I have always wanted to cruise one of these “buy-back” scams to see if there were any nice weapons being turned in so that I could rescue them and find them a nice home - in my gun cabinet.
look upon it this way: if they’re STOOPID enough to make the offer, why not accept?
Next time one is happening in your area have a bit of fun and notify the ATF of an illegal gun market going on. Don't mention that it's the cops running it, just give 'em the address and say that a bunch of gangbangers will be selling guns.
Then sit back and watch the hilarity ensue.
Better be sure to use one of the few remaining pay phones, or buy a cell phone with cash specifically for that one purpose...
You can get any number of cheap .25s (Lorcin, Raven, etc.) for $50 or so apiece. I wish someone would have this sort of program in Denver so I could make a quick profit!
And specifically, one with no cameras around.

Still, the question remains: How can you “buy back” something that was never yours?
They had one of these years ago in Bloomfield when I lived there. A good friend who was a cop was one of the administrators of the farce. He went into it believing that it would be a good thing. After it was over all they had was a bunch of junk that would not fire. He changed his mind real fast. I don’t know that they have done it since.
