Iranian forces take over Iraq oil well

NASIRIYAH, Iraq (AFP) – Iranian forces took control of a southern Iraqi oil well on a disputed section of the border on Friday, US and Iraqi officials told AFP.

"There has been no violence related to this incident and we trust this will be resolved through peaceful diplomacy between the governments of Iraq and Iran," a US military spokesman told AFP at Contingency Operating Base Adder, just outside the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.

"The oil field is in disputed territory in between Iranian and Iraqi border forts," he said, adding that such incidents occur quite frequently.

Well 4 lies in the Fauqa Field, part of a cluster of fields Iraq unsuccessfully put up for auction to oil majors in June. The field has estimated reserves of 1.55 million barrels.

The field is about 500 metres (yards) from an Iranian border fort and about 1 kilometre from an Iraqi border fort, US Colonel Peter Newell said, adding that it falls on the Iraqi side of a border agreed between the two countries.

There are five other similar fields that also fall into disputed territory, he said.

"What happens is, periodically, about every three or four months, the oil ministry guys from Iraq will go ... to fix something or do some maintenance. They'll paint it in Iraqi colours and throw an Iraqi flag up.

He added that the Iraqis are "very concerned about the Iranians pulling oil out of fields underneath Iraq."

Iran has prevented Iraqi oil officials from reaching the well in the past, an industry source said. The Iraqis have accused Iran of firing on their people, something Tehran has denied.

This whole thing depends on what Iran’s Supreme Ayatollah wants to accomplish and the last I heard of him he was staining his robes running and hiding from what was probably an Israeli “proof-that-we-know-where-you-live” incident.

Does anybody have an update on that report of a few days ago?

The Iranians merely wish to make sure that the oil isn't used by capitalist pigs in a way that would contribute to climate change.

Of course you won’t hear a response from Obama. You won’t hear a response from Maliki—this time.

I have a feeling when Iraq gets F-16s and their next shipment of M1 Abrams tanks (at least one shipment of 35 tanks has already been delivered), Iran is going to think twice about these shenanigans. This can’t happen soon enough.

“Iran is testing Obama, just like it did Jimmy Carter”

Damn right it is. As we sit with our thumbs up our hind end, they’ll next occupy something bigger and more prominent, like a border city. After all, the “United” States won’t offer any credible resistance, not under its current regime.

I worry that zer0 will start babbling about the Iraqi army "standing up" and "taking responsibility." They will, inexpertly, and cause a terrible incident. They just aren't ready for prime time nor is their heart in it.

Well, I don't think that I'm going to locate the information, but I was so angry about their assassination plot to target Netanyahu, that I am DELIGHTED to learn that the Head Mad Mullah has received a personalized visit from Bibi's bodyguards.

Bibi and his people know a thing or two about operating in the real world. Unlike some POTUSes I know.

NO kidding, that TOTUS is getting pretty downright scary... particularly during those periods when there's a flurry of articles out of Tehran.

Yes . I can’t wait to get out of this quagmire.Billions of dollars blown for nothing. When we leave the Iranian Shiites will combine with the 70 % Shiites in Iraq to form a super Shiite state known as “New Persia”. They will sell oil to everyone but us. What a fiasco. We should have made them a state and taken their oil. We are such women. I want my money back.
