One would think an entire think-tank university staff is behind Snopes.
Not so. It's a couple — husband and wife.
Their opinions are considered bible by countless who check out "the facts" by going to Snopes.com. These countless include college profs, Congresspersons, the National Review writers, and masses climbing all over the grassroots.

Like Wiki and others Snopes is a good place to first check out something. I would appreciate seeing two examples of “lies” on Snopes.

Snopes is generally ok for verifying email rumors. Anything political and you are better off asking the neighbor.

Following that link one finds another reference to the birth certificate story with an explanation of why Snopes is wrong. No matter whether you believe that Obama was born in Hawaii or not, it is quite plain that the COLB provided by the campaign and cited by Snopes is not definitive.
It also mentions an EPA story about the safety of cfl bulbs. The writer faults them for providing links to the EPA in order to “prove” the assertions of the EPA. I would have to agree that this is not good journalism, but it isn’t really a “lie”.
I don’t have it at my finger tips but I was reading one of their stories on an issue.
It was very slick, like a politician that is asked a question, talks for five minutes but does not address the issue.
They put up the questionable issue and the responses and then talked about only the responses. I got done reading it and was like “What, they never addressed the question?”. Went back and read it a couple more times, same opinion.
They are slick, very slick - just like a politician.
Snopes.com was featured in the April edition of Readers Digest. For most people that have heard of Snopes, this might be an eye opener as Snopes.com is a husband and wife team. Barbara and David Mikkelson.
A husband and wife team that pawned the fraud that Obama was born in Hawaii, with NO documentation to back up their claim, and the public - bought it, hook, line, and sinker!

The issue with snopes is that they are Urban Legend hunters. When it came to the Obama birth certificate, they presented facts that were NOT true.
By them stating that Obama was born in Hawaii,they had no access to the “Vault” copy nor additional information. They lied, and they lied to the public big time.
When Congressmen and Senators tell their constituiants they verified Obama eligibility by checking snopes, we have a MAJOR problem.
Like I have stated before. Imagine John Kerry, standing in the Senate and stating “We know Saddam had WMD’s, cause we checked with Snopes” or Hillary verifying the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, because she checked with Snopes.
Persoanlly, I feel that Barbara and David Mikkelson, need to be charged with defrauding the public.
Make them in a court of law, prove how they determined where Obama was born or even that he was a natural born citizen.

Another way of saying that is, if they cannot dazzle you with brilliance they try to baffle you with BS. They often have as much Spin as they do fact.

One “lie” would be Snopes assertion that they have validated Obama’s birth certificate.
I am NOT a “birther”, but it is clear that Obama has done nothing toward producing a valid birth certificate.
I don’t like defending Snopes, but the scenario you mention could easily occur simply because they didn’t have any research material but felt compelled to say something. The results sound just like a politician.

Three independent sources - you can usually assume something is true.
I would too. Most of the examples I've seen are with regard to political issues where often people of good faith can differ.
The Obama BC being the primary one. Snopes has accepted the posted COLB as genuine. If it is, then their position is unassailable.
If you believe the posted COLB is not definitive proof, then you must assume his "natural-born" status is "not proven," as I do. Note this doesn't mean he isn't natural-born, just that he's not proven it.
But it's a big step from a disagreement over the value of a given piece of evidence to claiming they are lying.
That's exactly where the claims about GWB's "lies" about WMDs in Iraq came from. He believed the CIA and every other intelligence service in the world, all of whom turned out to be wrong. Therefore he "lied." If lying means saying something is true when you know it to be untrue, then neither GWB nor (probably) Snopes is guilty.
I had an e-mail discussion with the Snopers over the Ron Brown questions raised by the military pathologists. They refused to acknowledge that it was military pathologists who had many questions about Ron Brown’s death and it should have been investigated. I stopped paying any attention to them after that.

This link hs to do with the Clinton body count concerning the deaths surrounding Bill & Hillary Clinton.
As opposed to direct factual falsehoods, Snopes tends to lie by omission or false implication, they give conclusions that are unsupported by the stated facts, and they create strawmen arguments for positions they oppose so they can reach the desired outcome. E.g., they could say that Senator Tom Coburn has never denied killing JonBenet Ramsey (true) so they have to label that rumor “Undetermined.”
Plenty of history here about the Snopes ‘researchers’ being liberal Democrats.

According to Snopes it is untrue that Martin Luther King is the only man honored by a national holiday because there is Columbus Day. But King is the only AMERICAN honored by a national holiday and that was the claim all along. Once Washington’s birthday became Prez Day that left us with just one AMERICAN so honored.
