A plant that started life during the last Ice Age is still going strong in the arid scrublands of California, scientists revealed today.

Researchers believe the Jurupa Oak has been around for 13,000 years, making it the oldest living plant in the world.

The oak is made up of a community of cloned bushes and scientists believe it has managed to survive the extreme effects of climate change by regenerating.

...the Earth been around for a few billions of years……

In the seventeenth century Archbishop James Ussher of the Church of Ireland calculated that the earth was created on October 23, 4004 BC, at 9:00 in the morning. I assume that was Pacific Daylight Time.

Doesn’t a small amount of research count for anything?

An aspen grove that is possibly 1 million years old.

Where I am all or the Oaks are stressed and many seem in death throes; large branches dying off and debris all over the lawn after every windy day. I had a forester on my property recently and he said this is common throughout New England.

“...with a few lines from a single book.”

Authored by God and thus the final word. Hell, the Guy who put it all together and then wrote The Book would pretty much know the correct age. If there seems to be a conflict with what is before your eyes and what He said, well, the choice you make as to which to believe settles the matter.

Does that mean it's a Time Lord tree? :-)

I was down that way recently and visited Avery Island.

It is a pure tale of family woe.

The Mclhenny ancestor aquired the Island planted peppers and invented Tabasco Sauce that still feeds the family fortune. Somewhere along the line they discovered the island was a salt dome and began mining salt and still do. Then someone associated a salt dome with oil and the oil and gas wells began to come in. Later, Tabasco was so popular folks began to visit the island and admire the beauty and they made a sort of theme park.

To day, to get on the island, you must pay a toll.... $1

That family really knows how to use it’s assets and make a buck.

The Tabasco ice cream was terrific.

Try not to mix facts with beliefs... that’s where you seem to fail every time.

“God didn’t write the bible, man did.”

According to God He wrote it. God says He wrote it, you say He didn’t. Not a tough decision here.

God is a fact. He is a fact greater supported by evidence than any view that He does not exist.

At any rate, as far as "facts" go I have never met a human being who believed any demonstrable fact he did not happen to like.

So Constantine and the council who decided which of the writings done by different men over a thousand years were told by God which to include in it and which to destroy? Many of the old testament books were written hundreds of years after the fact, from stories handed down verbally from generation to generation. Don’t get me wrong - it’s not that I don’t believe in God, but if you ask me if man will change his words to suit their own ends then I will say yes.

Look to the works of John Taylor and his alteration of the King James Bible as a single case in point, there have been many others through time also of course.

“So Constantine and the council who decided which of the writings done by different men..”

Constantine and anybody else involved are an invention of God. If you accept the Truth of Almighty God's existence, that is if you believe in God, then you MUST accept that the words he handed down to us are PRECISELY accurate. Otherwise your god is a bungler, botch artist, clown, farcial ass, take your pick. If you DON'T happen to accept that there is an almighty God then obviously men composed the Bible but in that case who the the hell even cares?

But One who not only can see across time but also INVENTED it, One who knew your name and the number of hairs on your head all the way back at the dawn of Time is not bloody likely to feckup the words handed down. Frankly, if you were to task me with separating the night from the day and the sea from the firmament verses, say, getting the right lingo into a book I'd much rather take the latter assignment. One who could do the former isn't going to stumble much when it comes to accomplishing the latter

Your post makes my point on this tread eloquently. No matter what proof of any kind is set before you if it goes against the teachings in a book you will never even open yourself up to the possibility of it being right.

There have been times in my life when I do envy people with your unwavering faith, I know I will never feel that strongly or surely about any belief, too much proof of the fallacy of man I guess.

We are at war with people who think exactly like you do but with another book, one that differs greatly from yours yet their argument for it is exactly the same, word for word. They use it to justify some of the worst acts of cruelty known to man, yet are sure it is His will they are doing it for.

I look at their argument, I look at yours, and if one is based on a man like Mohammad who would use his teachings to create a following that men are willing to kill over then I see others possibly doing it also.

I see people falling over themselves to throw their lives into the belief that an alien is imprisoned in a volcano somewhere. If L. Ron Hubbard lived 3000 years ago in that time frame could not his writings have been interpreted by millions also as divine?

I do believe that there is more to our lives that what science can ever show, but I just can’t put my faith in the ancient writings of people who were also struggling to understand where we came from and what it all means.

YOU REDUCE ALL THINGS TO BEING EQUAL. THEY ARE NOT. THE BIBLE IS NOT ‘A BOOK’ ANY MORE THAN MOHAMMAD IS JESUS. THE BIBLE IS THE FIRST BOOK, WHICH TOLD OF THE SECOND BOOK (NEW TESTAMENT). MOHAMMAD WAS CENTURIES LATE AND A SAVIOUR SHORT (NOT TO MENTION HE CONTRADICTS THE FIRST BOOK).

YOU TAKE THE WORD OF GOD OUT OF CONTEXT TO DISMISS IT. BELIEF ISN’T LEGITIMIZED BECAUSE MANY SUBSCRIBE TO IT. IT MUST HAVE PROVANANCE. THE BIBLE, 1ST AND 2ND DOES.IT ISN’T ‘A BOOK’ IT IS THE FIRST.

There have been times in my life when I do envy people with your unwavering faith, I know I will never feel that strongly or surely about any belief, too much proof of the fallacy of man I guess.

MORES THE PITY. UNWAVERING FAITH IS NOT IGNORANT (AS IT IS POPULARLY DEPICTED IN OUR NEW DECAYED CULTURE)IT IS HARD COME BY AND IT IS A ROCK WHICH NEVER MOVES. I SUFFERED LIKE ALL HELL TO BE WHERE I AM TODAY. HISTORY IS FULL OF PEOPLE WHO HAD THE ROCK AT THEIR BACK. G. WASHINGTON, FOR INSTANCE, DIDN’T GALLOP ABOUT IN NO MANS LAND ALL BY HIMSELF. HE HAD THAT ROCK AT HIS BACK. I STARTED OUT THINKING GOD WAS A CREATION OF SISSYS, FAGGOTS AND OLD LADYS. I CAME TO THINKING OTHERWISE THROUGH THE GRACE OF GOD AND BY PARSING THE WORDS AND APPLYING REASON. IF I’D EVER COME UP EMPTY I’D HAVE TOSSED THE LOT AS A FRUAD.

We are at war with people who think exactly like you do but with another book, one that differs greatly from yours yet their argument for it is exactly the same, word for word. They use it to justify some of the worst acts of cruelty known to man, yet are sure it is His will they are doing it for.

THIS IS A REPUGNANT CHEAPSHOT AND A SAD, THIN, WEAK, FIGLEAF

I look at their argument, I look at yours, and if one is based on a man like Mohammad who would use his teachings to create a following that men are willing to kill over then I see others possibly doing it also.

MORE OF THE SAME

I see people falling over themselves to throw their lives into the belief that an alien is imprisoned in a volcano somewhere. If L. Ron Hubbard lived 3000 years ago in that time frame could not his writings have been interpreted by millions also as divine?

NOT A CHANCE IN HELL. L RON HUBBARD COULD NO MORE HAVE AVOIDED CONTRADICTION INHERENT IN LOW ORIGIN THAN MOHAMMAD DID. AND HE WOULD HAVE NEEDED THE SAVAGE HORDES THAT MOHAMMAD COALESCED TO SPREAD HIS EARTHBOUND VIRUS. THE TORAH AND JESEUS CHRIST HAD NO HOMOGENOUS CULTURE OR ARMY TO INSPIRE AND SURVIVE. THAT IS A TELL RIGHT THERE. THE WORD OF GOD SHATTERS THE ETHER. THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES US OUR EYES AND EARS. WE CAN ‘SEE’ AND ‘HEAR’ OR NOT, AS WE WISH.

... but I just can’t put my faith in the ancient writings of people who were also struggling to understand where we came from and what it all means.

BACK TO SQUARE ONE. GOD WROTE THE BIBLE OR THERE IS NO GOD.

Merry christmas my friend.
