Authors Claim Pets Are More Damaging to Environment Than SUVs

Taking the dog for a walk to the store would seem like a more environmentally-friendly option than piling into the SUV.

Not so, say two New Zealand scientists whose new book claims pets have a carbon footprint that is about twice the size of the gas guzzling vehicles that have long been a bane of environmentalism.

In "Time to Eat the Dog, the Real Guide to Sustainable Living," Robert and Brenda Vale charge that a medium-size dog has a footprint of 2.1 acres compared with slightly more than one acre for a standard sport utility vehicle.

The New Scientist Web site relayed other carbon footprint comparisons from the Vales' book. Cats are roughly equal to small Volkswagens while two hamsters have the same footprint as a plasma television. Goldfish are comparable to a pair of cell phones.

Well if my pets make such a big carbon foot print then I imagine those scientists would be leaving a carbon foot print 5 or 10 times the size of my dogs and my cats.

So let’s just eat the scientists who are soooooo full of hot air and save a whole lot of carbon. :)

My dog is lying on the couch beside me as I read this and just broke wind something fierce (not kidding).

A strange coincidence? Perhaps.

Illegal alien encampments cause California wildfires. Think that those are detrimental to the environment?

"Any claims on the Earth's resources, whether it's having pets or having children, we need to think about. It doesn't necessarily mean getting rid of your pet now. But when the pet dies, as they eventually do, you might want to think about whether you replace it or not," he said.

These people are not from the planet earth. I wonder what planet dumped this trash on us anyway.

It's interesting to note that these people feel that the only animals in the whole world that are causing harm to us is our pets.

There are attempts to legislate our pets out of existance. Watch for proposed manditory spay and neuter laws - s/n everything at 4 months and where do you get more?

SUVs again?

What about those enormous, overpowered pick-ups driven by Democrat-voting union members?

Or how about those nasty, diesel-belching delivery trucks that deliver liberals, all their goodies right to their front door?

You mean my six pound kitty has a carbon pawprint equal to a VW?? Wow, will she be proud!
I suspect we’re being tested now, to see what level of outrageous stupidity we will accept. And unfortunately, in democrats, that level is infinite

I actually happened to see this y-day somewhere on the web other than FR (how’d that happen?!?!) and just had to laugh at it while thinking of my 5 lb kitty, 114 lb dog and 55 lb dog. And then remember the older sister’s horses.

Deep in my heart I believe that even with all those carbon paw prints and hoof prints, an AF1 trip to Copenhagen and Hawaii and a NYC flyover probably exceed our animals draw on this planet’s resources for their entire lives.

On a totally different note, I just also have to voice my complete disgust that the senate (not deserving of a capital letter) has chosen to vote on the health care reform monstrosity on Christmas Eve. They think it will pass and be the equivalent of gold, frankincense, and myrrh for their king.

I am still hoping it won’t be passed.

If they do pass it, and follow it with cap and trade, they will tax us for our pets, for everything. They will take everything. These bills aren’t about health care or environmentalism, any more than rape is about sex. It’s all about power.

Cynicism. It’s not just for breakfast any more.
