Jubilant Senate Dems ready to pass health care
Associated Press ^ | December 23, 2009 | Erica Werner

Exultant Senate Democrats prepared to deliver a Christmas Eve win to President Barack Obama with passage of landmark health care legislation that would extend coverage to 30 million Americans.

Powerless to stop it, Republicans stepped up their attacks, contending the sweeping bill threatened to harm Medicare and add billions to the deficit.

"Tomorrow the Senate will vote on a bill that makes a bad situation worse," Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said on the Senate floor Wednesday, the 24th day of debate on the 10-year, nearly $1 trillion bill. "This bill slid rapidly down the slippery slope to more and more government control of health care."

Democrats begged to differ. "Senate Democrats are poised to pass historic health reform legislation on Thursday that will extend affordable, quality coverage to millions of Americans in a fiscally responsible way. Our bill saves lives, saves money and saves Medicare," Senate leaders said in a statement.

At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs declared, "Health care reform is not a matter of if, health care reform now is a matter of when."

Obama himself said the Senate legislation accomplishes 95 percent of what he wanted. "Every single criteria for reform I put forward is in this bill," the president told The Washington Post.

But even if the Senate approves the legislation, it can't go to Obama for his signature until Congress resolves differences between the House and Senate versions. Some of them are contentious — especially stricter provisions in the House against using taxpayer money to pay for abortion coverage and the House's income tax increase for high-earning Americans.

Before the final Senate vote, Democrats must get past the last procedural hurdle Wednesday afternoon and put up 60 votes for the last time to cut off debate on the legislation.

"Jubilant" and "exultant", huh? Let's make sure they are not jubilant after the mid-term elections. I'll be voting in the MA special election for Senator on Jan 19.

The Democrats are like kids huddled around the Christmas tree.

When Americans actually get to find out what all this bill is going to cost them..a democrat won’t be able to get elected as dog catcher.

Oh, it will be an historic vote alright. In an infamous sense, that is.

Exultant?

I'd prefer "bleeding profusely"...

Conservatives seem to think that November 2010 will solve everything. Even if they are successful, a very large amount of work awaits.

1. Get tens of millions of people living productive lives instead of living off of the federal nipple.
2. Overhauling the school systems and universities, now in control of collectivists.
3. Re-setting a standard of morality in the public mind that lying, stealing, cheating, coveting and fornicating are wrong. Right now the feds encourage them all with gusto.
4. Ending the existence of about 1/2 of all government agencies, entitlements, grants, earmarks, leeches.

If permanent and huge changes are not made, a win in 2010 will just be a death spasm for the country, a dead-cat bounce. Collectivism never sleeps, never quits pushing, never stops looking for an opportunity.

How is that election shaping up? Are the Republicans so sound asleep they don’t realize they should be putting money hand over fist in there and fighting a delaying action on the bill?

Excellent list.

I’m glad to see the FUNDAMENTAL nature of the tasks you listed.

The foundation of our country and the proven, formative principles of western civilization, under Leftist assault since at least the mid 1960s, must be restored.

Notice how this has nothing to do with improving health care, but everything to do with politics.

Obama is pushing this country towards a civil war. This is unconstitutional.

Sounds like they’re doing a lot of laughing.

Some say, he who laughs last laughs best. I say, he who laughs last . . . didn’t get the joke.

And of course, you know the three times a person laughs at a joke, right? One, when they hear it. Two, when they tell it. And three, when they understand it.

“When Americans actually get to find out what all this bill is going to cost them..a democrat won’t be able to get elected as dog catcher.”

That’s a nice thought, but it won’t work out that way. The problems with the healthcare system will be seen as the result of not enought gvt oversight and money, not the injection of gvt into the system in the first place.

Look at Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.

They will be laughing at the other side of their faces a year from now.
I am going to be especially delighted to look closely at the broken, botox disfigured face of Nazi Pelosi when she is booted out of the Speaker's chair next year.

It won't matter. Like all enlargements of government power and bureaucracy, this health-care takeover will never be undone, and America will suffer as a consequence. Elections have consequences, and this could easily be the worst of the 2008 election. My anger is aimed not only at the Democrats for ram-rodding this atrocity into law, but also at the Republicans who squandered years in the majority and set the stage for this.

Yes it will.
Look at the this week's polls which were taken after the Senate vote on Sunday. 0bozo's poll ratings hit new lows (56/44 Apprive/Disapprove), even as the generic congressional polls hit new lows as well (44/36 for Republicans).
Look at the New Jersey and Virgina elections from last month.
The Democrats are the living dead right now.

Look at Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.”

You are kidding right?
