Exultant Senate Democrats prepared to deliver a Christmas Eve win to President Barack Obama with passage of landmark health care legislation that would extend coverage to 30 million Americans.
Powerless to stop it, Republicans stepped up their attacks, contending the sweeping bill threatened to harm Medicare and add billions to the deficit.
"Tomorrow the Senate will vote on a bill that makes a bad situation worse," Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said on the Senate floor Wednesday, the 24th day of debate on the 10-year, nearly $1 trillion bill. "This bill slid rapidly down the slippery slope to more and more government control of health care."
Democrats begged to differ. "Senate Democrats are poised to pass historic health reform legislation on Thursday that will extend affordable, quality coverage to millions of Americans in a fiscally responsible way. Our bill saves lives, saves money and saves Medicare," Senate leaders said in a statement.
At the White House, press secretary Robert Gibbs declared, "Health care reform is not a matter of if, health care reform now is a matter of when."
Obama himself said the Senate legislation accomplishes 95 percent of what he wanted. "Every single criteria for reform I put forward is in this bill," the president told The Washington Post.
But even if the Senate approves the legislation, it can't go to Obama for his signature until Congress resolves differences between the House and Senate versions. Some of them are contentious especially stricter provisions in the House against using taxpayer money to pay for abortion coverage and the House's income tax increase for high-earning Americans.
Before the final Senate vote, Democrats must get past the last procedural hurdle Wednesday afternoon and put up 60 votes for the last time to cut off debate on the legislation.

Hope it comes up right.

Merry ..... Christmas!
They can pass this with the bribery involved?
When Americans actually get to find out what all this bill is going to cost them..a democrat won’t be able to get elected as dog catcher.
Oh, it will be an historic vote alright. In an infamous sense, that is.
I'd prefer "bleeding profusely"...
Conservatives seem to think that November 2010 will solve everything. Even if they are successful, a very large amount of work awaits.
1. Get tens of millions of people living productive lives instead of living off of the federal nipple.
2. Overhauling the school systems and universities, now in control of collectivists.
3. Re-setting a standard of morality in the public mind that lying, stealing, cheating, coveting and fornicating are wrong. Right now the feds encourage them all with gusto.
4. Ending the existence of about 1/2 of all government agencies, entitlements, grants, earmarks, leeches.
If permanent and huge changes are not made, a win in 2010 will just be a death spasm for the country, a dead-cat bounce. Collectivism never sleeps, never quits pushing, never stops looking for an opportunity.
“”Jubilant” and “exultant”, huh? Let’s make sure they are not jubilant after the mid-term elections. I’ll be voting in the MA special election for Senator on Jan 19.”
How is that election shaping up? Are the Republicans so sound asleep they don’t realize they should be putting money hand over fist in there and fighting a delaying action on the bill?
The ignorant are now in the chamber ready for their ‘shower’.
Next November is time enough for celebration...
Excellent list.
I’m glad to see the FUNDAMENTAL nature of the tasks you listed.
The foundation of our country and the proven, formative principles of western civilization, under Leftist assault since at least the mid 1960s, must be restored.
Notice how this has nothing to do with improving health care, but everything to do with politics.
Obama is pushing this country towards a civil war. This is unconstitutional.
Sounds like they’re doing a lot of laughing.
Some say, he who laughs last laughs best. I say, he who laughs last . . . didn’t get the joke.
And of course, you know the three times a person laughs at a joke, right? One, when they hear it. Two, when they tell it. And three, when they understand it.
“When Americans actually get to find out what all this bill is going to cost them..a democrat wont be able to get elected as dog catcher.”
That’s a nice thought, but it won’t work out that way. The problems with the healthcare system will be seen as the result of not enought gvt oversight and money, not the injection of gvt into the system in the first place.
Look at Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.
Yes it will.
Look at the this week's polls which were taken after the Senate vote on Sunday. 0bozo's poll ratings hit new lows (56/44 Apprive/Disapprove), even as the generic congressional polls hit new lows as well (44/36 for Republicans).
Look at the New Jersey and Virgina elections from last month.
The Democrats are the living dead right now.
“Look at Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.”
You are kidding right?
So stealing or healthcare is a ‘win’ for Obama, eh?
First, you stop the bleeding ...
Like the part about not raising the deficit?
Or was it the part about premiums not going up?
Or maybe it was lowering perscription drug costs?
Oh yeah, it improves the quality of care?
Somehow it will get blamed on the Republicans and Bush.....
The media will repeat the lies daily and we will watch in frustration as we loose another election to ignorance.
Merry Christmas Everyone.
Will be praying for a miracle tomorrow.

Morris points out that there are 81 Dems in Congress that are in Districts carried by John McCain in 2008..(Video)
All of that will only happen under one instance: A massive repentance and turn to Christ. We have an immoral, godless government because we have an immoral, godless people. The first responsibility if the Church is the preaching of the Gospel to the masses. If the people repent, the rest will follow.
Exactly how is this supposed to be a victory for a party that has a super-majority? They damn sure can not be considering this bill an accomplishment.

thanks for the post...
Hard to believe the happy mood of death/concentration camp thugs.
But it’s is a good thing to see it and contemplate such obscenity.
0bama's "core constituency" doesn't care, they don't pay taxes anyway, and by the time the rest figure it out, we'll all be broke and out of work.
There is always one more idiot than we counted on.
Actually, no. I’m not.
And again I cite the example of Fannie Mae: The dems are mainly responsible for the whole “sub-prime” crisis, yet what did it cost them?
Obama won, didn’t he? And we still have dem control of both houses, don’t we.
Yeah, sure, there will be some backlash here or there. But I maintain it won’t change the general direction of this country - which is solidly to the left.
Because it happened under Bush's watch.
0bamacare is under a Democratic House, Democratic Senate, Democratic president. Totally different.
“Obama won, didnt he?”
After McCain had voted for the stimulus and pissed of conservative voters.
” And we still have dem control of both houses, dont we.”
Get back to me on Novemebr 2010 and see if you can make that same claim again.
“Yeah, sure, there will be some backlash here or there”,/i>
There is no “hear and there” about it.
The Democrats WILL get slaughtered in next year's congressional elections. It's not even an issue anymore.
The only question is how big the massacre is going to be.
“But I maintain it wont change the general direction of this country - which is solidly to the left.”
Every poll that has conservatives overwhelmingly in the majority in this country, puts a lie to your statement:
“BATTLEGROUND POLL: CONSERVATIVES MAKE UP 63 PERCENT OF AMERICA: WHAT IT ALL MEANS
Here is the latest polling from Battleground. This comes right on the heels of Gallop polling that also shows the majority of Americans consider themselves conservative. This is no fluke either. And as much as wed love to say that Obama is driving people away from his and his partys rapidly dying ideology, the truth is Battleground polling, since 2002, has consistently found similar results. Battleground, a bipartisan polling group, has a record of being very accurate.”
