HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Now that the healthcare bill has passed both houses, president Obama and his family started their holiday vacation.

The family left Andrews Air Force base this morning and they are expected to arrive at Hickam Air Force base this afternoon.

But aides to the First Lady say Bo, the White House dog, is not accompanying the Obamas on their family vacation in Hawaii.

The aides did not give a reason, but Hawaii has strict rules about dogs and pets entering the state and requires either a 120-day or 5-day-or-less rabies quarantine.

The Obamas will be spending 11 days on vacation in Hawaii.

And if all goes as planned, HawaiiNewsNow will be reporting "live" from Hickam Air Force base when the president and his family arrive this afternoon on air and online at Hawaiinewsnow.com.

MR. BURTON: When I said that there were no scheduled public events, there also aren’t a lot of scheduled private events. I think the President is going to wake up and see where the day takes him. I’ve checked out the forecast for the entire time we’re there: tomorrow it’s 81 and sunny; Friday it’s 81 and sunny; Saturday it’s 81 and sunny. So I think that the weather ought to lend itself to some outdoor activity.

There will be some friends from Chicago who come, like the Nesbitts and the Whitakers. And I think he’ll just try to enjoy Christmas the way his family has traditionally enjoyed it. This is an opportunity for the President to recharge his batteries, knowing that as President you never really get to power off all the way.

Its true about pets coming into Hawaii and quarantines. It would make for very bad news IF he did bypass those laws using executive privileges.
