EDITORIAL: The war on Christmas escalates
The Washington Times ^ | December 25, 2009

Mariah Jordat, 8, was reading her Bible during quiet time at Madison Park Elementary School in Oldbridge, N.J., when her teacher told her to put the book away. Mariah put her Bible under her desk, but that wasn't away enough. The teacher banished the book to the student's backpack. The persecution hurt her feelings and confused her, said Michelle Jordat, the little girl's mother. "Why would my teacher say that I can't read the Bible when I'm not bothering anybody else?"

It's ridiculous for a school to forbid a child, let alone one at such an impressionable age, to read the Bible during her free time, as the principal now admits. The school's mission statement says it wants to develop a child's uniqueness - an effort that can't likely be achieved by squelching her reading interests. If anything, Mariah ought to be applauded for the extraordinary maturity she probably has for someone of such a tender age, but in too many places, it would be more likely that she would be forced into remedial "diversity" training.

Little Mariah isn't alone. Earlier this month, a Massachusetts second-grader was suspended after drawing what his school said was a "violent" picture of Jesus Christ on the cross. Before he was permitted to return to the classroom, the boy had to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at his family's expense.

When you forsake your children to the Churches of Atheism, you have no grounds to be upset when the priesthoods’ behavior comports their creed.

If the child was reading the quran, liberal lawyers would be lined up defending the child’s freedom of religion.

That is what is fryin' my bananas! Because a Muslim, their "religion" requires them to "pray" several times a day, our public school classrooms are being turned into a "mosque" for them to abide by their "religion" If a Christian asked for a quiet, unused classroom to pray they'd have a fit! I'm gettin' real sick and tired of this.

Liberal teachers (meaning most of them) LOVE to do this...they LOVE to violate the constitution and call it constitutional because it fits their world view. Now, I will admit a few may not know the difference but most KNOW that this activity by a child in school IS LEGAL AND CONSTITUTIONALLY PROTECTED which makes them, the teachers, either a LIAR or stupid or both...I go with the last one.

NOT only that....but these mental midgits probably don’t know that education STARTED with the reading of the BIBLE!

Absolutely...Thomas Jefferson himself paid FEDERAL MONIES to get said Bibles into schools. The person that the left loves to falsely claim gave us today's separation of church and state (ref: Danbury Letter) used money from the Federal Budget to get the Bible into school and wanted it TAUGHT for purposes of morality and more.

Exactly right. Of course, though, Thomas Jefferson separated the morality of The Bible from the religious aspect...and I doubt many students would be reading The Bible if it weren't for their religion.

Schools supposedly are all about “reading”... they bribe kids to read with all sorts of programs and incentives. But OH NO - the reading must be from their list - you know the list much like the pervert “Safe Schools Czar” endorses that encourages “diversity” and an appreciation for our differences...

Not some antiquated old book of myths that criticizes abhorrent lifestyles as SIN... can’t possibly have a young impressionable (ie - brainwashable) mind tainted with such things... they might actually gain a real moral keel and hurt the cause of rampant immoral and socialist teaching in that school.

Yet another one of the many reasons we homeschool.

You’d be screaming bloody murder if President Bush had initiated a plan to do just that.

War on Christianity, just like the Communists waged after they got power.

I wonder when schools will forbid children to make “snow angels”?

Where are the conservative lawyers who should be defending these children and getting expense-reimbursements for their parents? They need to sue the teacher, the principle, the School Board and the whole school system.

Make them pay and apologize or take them to the cleaners. This is a First Amendment issue. Don’t expect the national ACLU to give a damn. It didn’t involve a Quran.

You can’t understand or appreciate English or American literature without at least a basic knowledge of the Bible. Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the rye, Huckleberry Finn, ad infinitum. They all have religious allegories and symbolism. Heck you need it to understand The Davinci Code.

Has it been established that her teacher is an atheist?

I go with stupid, too. The Bible is a book, not a weapon. I’m an atheist but I have the right to read any book I want and so does any child.

It's not just ridiculous, it's a direct violation of the girl's Constitutional rights!

Why do courts so blindly ignore the second part of the establishment clause?

"...or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

The teacher should be fired, sued and jailed.

No doubt...and liberals luuuuuuuuuuuv that! We can see it when they get involved in such cases as the child whose mom and dad are in a custody battle for her and what she will or will not be taught re: going to a Baptist Church. The evil thing in the whole case, or, the insidious monster they are working to feed and grow is establishing PRECEDENT of the case to start the process of RESTRICTING a parent from forcing a child to church...especially those CHRISTIAN ones. They could care less about the girl or her parents. They will look the other way at terrorism school and other religions but battle ONLY against Christendom.
