Travel Advisory (New flight restrictions announced in wake of Flt. 253 attack)
Air Canada ^ | Saturday, December 26, 2009

Posted on 12/26/2009 10:10:05 AM PST by kristinn

MONTREAL December 26, 2009 -- Air Canada advises passengers travelling to the U.S. that due to enhanced government security measures air travellers should arrive early at airports to allow extra time to clear security screening. Passengers should also expect flight delays, cancellations and missed connections, and limit themselves to a single piece of carry-on baggage.

Air Canada recommends passengers travelling to the U.S. to arrive early at the airport for their flight in order to allow adequate time for additional personal searches. Under new rules enacted by Transport Canada and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, passengers and their carry-on baggage will be subject to full searches both at airport screening points and prior to boarding at the aircraft gate area.

As a result of the added security precautions, passengers should also expect delayed and cancelled flights as well as missed connections. Air Canada will endeavour to transport passengers to their destination as quickly as possible and rebook passengers who miss their connections at no charge. While these measures directly affect only flights from Canada to the United States, domestic and international flights may also experience delays due to airport congestion and delayed aircraft. For information on a flight's status please consult www.aircanada.com.

In addition, new rules imposed by Transport Canada will limit the amount of carry-on baggage to one item per person travelling on flights from Canada to the United States. Existing checked baggage rules remain in effect. For details on checked baggage allowances, please consult http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/index.html.

"The safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority at Air Canada," said Duncan Dee, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "Our operations teams will be working closely with airport and government authorities to minimize any inconvenience to our customers and to ensure that our customers reach their destinations safely and comfortably."

New rules imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration also limit on-board activities by customers and crew in U.S. airspace that may adversely impact on-board service. Among other things, during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps.

More information for customers on affected flights, including options for rebooking cancelled flights online and updates on delayed baggage tracking, is available at www.aircanada.com.

Most, if not all of these rules, will apply to all U.S. domestic and international flights.

The one-hour rule will keep people strapped to their seats for most flights of ninety minutes duration.

The searches at boarding gates are a new wrinkle.

They're being upfront that these new rules will wreck your travel schedule. Good luck.

That’s reassuring, isn’t it?

Now we can spend a trillion more on airport security so my wife and I can get frisked a couple of NEW ways when we are going to visit the grandkids.

This is pathetic.

Why not CUT the budget and focus on the likely suspects...frisking everyone is like a football team running a defense where they try to cover everyone in the STADIUM instead of the opposing players.

Nice play calling, Coach Bammy...

The government is in the hands of foreigners and friends-of-terrorists. So when a terrorist strikes, the victim of any new government action is going to be the people, not the terrorists.

Eric Holder is a documented Defender of Terrorists.

And Barak Obama never saw a terrorist he didn’t want to go to church with.

Looks like I’ll be making heavy use of podcasts on my iPhone during the final hour of each flight. I read the rules as stating I can’t be holding a book or using my laptop. An hour is a long time!!

How long before each passenger is bound and gagged in their seat for the entire flight from take-off to landing following a comprehensive orifice examination?

Instead of taking a lesson from the success of El Al, the U.S. will instead adopt the liberal model: everyone suffers equal misery and humiliation, and if it still doesn't work, at least we will know we were 'fair'.

You mean frisk all blacks? This guy could have passed as any black man and does not look like your typical terrorist.

Many terrorists have looked like hispanics...do you want to frisk them all?

The Uighars look asian, so anybody fitting that description needs to be checked.

Oh, Chechnyan terrorists look very caucasian....so we should frisk all whites.

If we do that, we are right back where we are today...everybody gets screened.

If you believe this enemy is a single race, you are as naive as most liberals.

Here is the ironic problem with the new rules.

Had this terrorist injected the liquid into the PETN an hour before they landed, it would probably have exploded properly.

Instead it just fizzled and burned his legs, likely due to improper ‘mixing time’.

The perp had the bomb strapped to his leg? How is this new rule going to help?

Why don't they just pass a rule that says "passengers must declare all bomb belts, bombs strapped to other body parts and bombs hidden inside body cavities"? That would be about as useful as the old questions they aske at the check-in counter -- "Did you pack your bag yourself? Has it been in your possession the whole time? Did a terrorist ask you to carry a bomb for him?"

fox .. Lufthansa flight setting down in Greenland due to abandoned set fo bags aboard plane, passenger did not get on flight. hmmm?

Why the Holidays?

Do we blow them up in Ramadan? Do we harass them in their enclaves on our shores?

This is crazy. Something Our Founding Fathers perhaps never envisioned ,, or did they?

They gave us the tools to keep this Republic.

Do we have the skills and gumption to use them against all those violently opposing our rights and freedoms?

Do our leaders share our Founding Fathers vision?

Time to release the hounds of war upon those who even now openly wage it on civilian populations.

How’s the water temperature, Mr. Obama? Nice and sunny today?

My wife and I traveled to Las Vegas last year from the Los Angeles area. When planning our trip, I wasn’t thrilled to have to put up with the nonsense one had to at the airports these days. We decided to drive.

When you start adding up the time involved to get there and back, it doesn’t take much longer to drive.

Super-shuttle to airport. Early check in. Waiting for the flight to board. Boarding. Flight time. Waiting for your luggage at the destination. Taking it over to the cab loading zone. Traveling to your hotel. Tipping of three different individuals.

The travel time works out to be a bit more. The cost works out to be better, if you drive. The quality of your experience is much better. And in addition, when you get to Vegas, you have a vehicle to drive around to different places you want to go.

I don’t like the airport experience any longer. The mystique of flying has turned into more of an eastern block checkpoint experience. Ah, no thanks. If I can avoid it, I do not fly.

I had the solution to airport delays back in 2001, but no one will listen.

Make all passengers remove their clothes and board naked.

Will take a fraction of the time now spent in line.

Put all clothes on a freight hauler which will follow the plane carrying the passengers.

After landing, reunite clothes and people.

Why not?

Just another indignity, courtesy our government and our so courteous friendly air carriers.

How silly, this could all be settled by simply flying nude. Perhaps the airlines could provide little paper coverings to those concerned about modesty. :^)

Driving only works for trips of a certain length. I looked into driving to Vegas, but the trip is nearly 2000 miles each way.

It was 3 1/2 hours flying at $190 round trip or 18 hours of driving each way with at least one night in a hotel and $300 gas for the round trip.

Until these new rules came into effect, flying was still relatively painless. There was no wait at security, and apart from the idiocy of taking off shoes, it wasn’t overly invasive.

There are people on the 'no-fly' list that do not belong there and have difficulty getting removed. If this list is one level below, it is probably rife with mistakes.

And what exactly do Muslims look like? Bosniaks look just like any other Slavs; the bloke who tried to blow up the Northwest/Delta flight yesterday looks just like other Nigerian, including the Christians in the south of Nigeria; the members of Abu Sayef look just like any other Filipinos; the nitwit convert who blew himself up outside the OU football game looked just like any other American kid.

And I’m sure all of the Arab Christians who fled Muslim persecution for the United States will so appreciate being persecuted by the TSA for having similar skin and hair color and bone-structure to their erstwhile persecutors. (Despite imprudent, nay, downright foolish, imigration policies that have let lots of Muslim Arabs into the U.S. in recent years, most Arab-Americans are still Christians.)

No, focus on Muslims, period.
