Skip to comments.Airlines: New rules keep passengers in seats
Posted on 12/26/2009 11:51:05 AM PST by Presbyterian Reporter
Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing
The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.
Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.
Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows.
The TSA declined to confirm the new restrictions.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement Saturday that passengers flying to the U.S. from overseas may notice extra security, but she said the measures "are designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere."
A transportation security official speaking on condition of anonymity because the official wasn't authorized to speak publicly said passengers traveling internationally could see increased security screening at gates and when they check their bags, as well as additional measures on flights such as stowing carryons and personal items before the plane lands.
A Nigerian passenger on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam allegedly attempted to start a fire as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Friday, according to authorities. The incident has sparked a major international terrorism investigation.
Air Canada said it was limiting passengers to one carryon bag in response to a request from the U.S. and Canadian governments.

Let the Muslims fly their own airlines!!!!
This is a small victory for AQ in the larger GWOT.
So once again we get to be inconvenienced all in the name of “sensitivity” and “not being offensive”
I agree. Even when the Muslims fail, they win.
Get ready for a lot of wet seat cussions.
“...Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing...”
Ummm, wouldn’t a terrorist then simply try to blow up an airplane one hour and fifteen minutes before landing????
next you won’t be able to go unescorted...These people are idiots. If you can get to the bathroom at all, you could carry out this kind of attack. What’s the difference between 30,00 ft. and approach???
That’s wet seat cushions as well.
The terrorists have won because political correctess is killing this country. This jihadist was already on the do not fly list.
How did he get on? Why do I have to show ID to board a domestic flight if the single group that has killed tens of thousands around the world in terrorit attacks is given the kid gloves treatment?
I'm tired of this crap about treating Muslims as if they were just your garden variety tourist. They are little different from Nazis. Islam is not a religion. It is a military organization and should be treated as such. This goes for the ones born here too. If they won't publicly denounce acts of violence done in the name of Islam anywhere in the world, they need to be removed from the population at large.ML/NJ
Airport security is a joke. You would rather search my 86 year-old mother than "embarrass" us by restricting Muslim travel. You have a system so stupid that it cannot recognize that I am flying to or from the same airport that I have been flying to or from for more than 30 years, but somehow I can get onto an Air Force Base without even a boarding pass.
Get off your ass. Forget the Swine Flu. Do something to defend our country.
The guy was in his seat when he initiated the attack (window seat no less).
One would think PLANES were out for a killing method but apparently there are plenty of dumb dumbs who want to die that way.
An hour is a large window of opportunity. Nothing can stop a terrorist from blowing a plane up on final approach, since everyone will be strapped in.
During the final hour of flight, customers will have to remain seated, will not be allowed access to carry-on baggage and cannot have personal belongings or other items on their laps, according to a notice on Air Canadas Web site.
Just as I feared: a useless do-nothing, irritating worthless measure.
So the next guy sets off his fireworks 1 hour and 1 minute before landing. Now you can't move about for 2 hours before landing. And so on, until you can't leave your seat for the entire 12-hour flight to Europe.
How absolutely stupidly brain-dead can you get?!
Window seat above the fuel tanks.
So...that means the pregnant and elderly are not going to be able to fly???
What about flights of less than an hour? Get in that seat, fasten that seatbelt, and stay there. Wet your drawers, or worse, but you ain’t gettin’ up! Maybe we should bring back segregation? All Muslims on one plane and non-Muslims on another. Feel free to blow up the plane with your fellow believers on-board! Sad thing is, they would because they don’t care who dies in their act of defiance.
My interpretation is that those interfering with a terrorist are in violation.....
This directive will just be another excuse to have to endure more worthless, annoying, inconvenient, lax security at airports.
Absolute stupidity. The only person who left his seat in this attack was the Dutchman who beat the snot out of the terrorist.
Congratulations, TSA morons. All you’ve done is implement a rule that would hinder the person who prevented this attack from fully succeeding!
Aren’t our government rulers just brilliant? /HURL
So the Passenger that went Todd Beamer on the black jidhadist muslim on a flight that started in Africa, Must now stay in his seat or face fines or imprisonment?
there’s a “terrorist database” and this joker was on that.
there’s a “no fly list” but this joker wasn’t on that.
why isn’t there a “give this guy a superduper going over” list of all the people on the “terrorist database”?
is it because the feds are primarily reactive and not proactive?
USE THE DATABASE
Barack Hussein Obama our Black Muslim President bows to the Saudi Arabian King and what happens—
1. Major Nidal Hasan murders 13 Fort Hood Soldiers.
2. A Nigerian torches himself.
Our Muslim enemy knows that Obama is weak and they are taking the fight to us.
Soon there won’t be enough passengers willing to put up with the hassles of flying and the airlines will die off.
The muslims pigs will then have succeeded in totally destroying a multi-billion dollar industry.
Careful there. Flying your own airline, means you determine your own destination. Not that sound an idea as we have seen.
Why doesn’t the rest of the civilized word copy the safety procedures that the Isrealis use?
Circulation is a problem for some people. Already prone to clot up on flights, this directive could be very detrimental to them. They need to stand up and walk around a bit to avoid problems.
The long captivation that take place on the tarmacs at times, can also a very risky situation for these people.
Because the Israeli procedures are politically incorrect.
It has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with sweeping government power over all our lives in a politically correct society.
THIS IS NOT THE FREAKIN ANSWER!
The airlines are fast becoming aluminum jail cells for the duration of our flights. Due to trial lawyers and fear of them the airlines already OVER-REACT on turbulence and keep the light on for anything. This is WHAT the scum terrorist want...us enslaved and hating our own existence.
I frequently fly to Asia from the west coast, and passengers routinely ignore instructions on these flights. We could be descending thru turbulence and people are queueing up for the restrooms, or doing the same when we are taxiing for takeoff. Instructions are given in multiple languages but some people somehow think they are exempt, or that the urge to pee trumps all. I even see people unloading or trying to unload the overheads as soon as we touch down. Just once I’d like to see how many people would go flying if the pilot did a brake tap when all those buckles unsnap as the wheels touch down.
you are absolutely right!
TSA isn’t being run by adults...being run by children.
“oooh...see the pretty orange colored warning”
“yes...we know that guy is prominant (sp) on the terrorist watch list...that’s why we gave him a visa and kid-glove treatment when he booked his trip to Detroit”
“yes...the terrorist was in his seat when he tried to blow up the plane...let’s make everyone sit in their seats...that’ll make it impossible for terrorists to try to blow up a plane...see the smart/adult decisions i can impose on everyone........”
Stupid. They are going to have to have a “last call” 10 or more minutes before the last hour for use of the toilets. So all of the fliers will be in a long line trying to get in before then.
And this after they have plied you with all those free beverages.
Why not just strip everyone naked, then wrap them in duct tape? Remove the seats, throw everyone on board. It would save weight, fuel costs and they could lower ticket fares to boot!
Really? Can you please elaborate? I was thinking that they have armed air marshalls on all El-Al flights.
That’s so true!
Inconvenience foreign criminals and their supporters, or American citizens. Un-freakin-believeable.
The solution is obvious.
No visitors, tourist or student visas from ANYONE traveling from countries known to be predominantly muslim; ...or having made connection from any such countries!
No "humanitarian" anything.
No age limits.
Applies to everyone with the exception of diplomats, and those watched 24/7. Or simply expelled. I see no reason America needs any muslim non-resident and non citizen.
Naturalized or natural born muslims arrested and indicted for terrorist support activities? Deported to the last know family country of residence, and prohibited ever from returning in ANY capacity.
Well Duh - this won’t work (the stay in your seat for the hour before landing).
They just do it at take off. (rather than land in Detroit, take off from Detroit).
The real need in society is for teleportation, at least until the TSA figures out a way to make that impossible as well.
That's a No-No.
I really sympathize with folks that have to rely on flying for business and in many cases just to be able to see family because of long distances and time restraints.
I love flying but will never fly commercial again, I endured enough searches (I seem to set the bloomin’ security scanners everytime!) to say enough of that.
Now look at this nonsense, very dehumanizing.
AH! Right - can’t do that here.
Better to pick on 90 years olds in wheelechairs.
Upon arrival at your seat, you will find a pillow, blanket and a diaper, LOL!
I got out of one trip week after next. Can't get out of the cross-country flight late January. But I may be able to get out of the February trip to Europe, and maybe convince my boss I don't need to be going over there any more.
If this rule sticks, I've had it. I'll go from a job with well over 100k miles a year to one with zero (the position is there is I want it, and I am thinking I might want it now).
This directive tells you and me to stay in your seat. The terrorist scumbag was in his seat an hour before landing. If he had started his fuse on final approach, no one would be able to stop him.
Our tortured unwillingness to admit to the nature of the threat we face or to the identity of the enemy is going to get a lot of innocent people killed.
I am sick of this. We only fly when we have to, it has wrecked travel for our family.
